It turns out that the problem wasn't the skin, it's more that the really long string was in a minute font size! Why didn't anyone mention that? The page is still miles wide in prosilver too.

Just a thought, do you mean that the page isn't at all miles wide, or do you mean that in prosilver it's possible to ignore that the page is miles wide, unlike in the other skins?

Ian's right. I've just tried the skin Phil suggested, and although the page isn't miles wide anymore, the one particular post still is if you highlight it to read all the text. That of course doesn't matter though, because it's not affecting the rest of the thread.

I am stunned by how different this "ProSilver" skin is to the "AeroGreen". Absolutely everything is different. Right down to the avatars being on the right hand side instead of the left. I will keep this skin for a while to see how I get on with it, because changes always seem annoying first of all, but then you get used to them and don't notice. Anyway, on a lot of websites you don't have any choice when they decide to change the look, so you have to adapt.

It would be interesting to see how many of us are using each skin, as I hadn't thought about changing to this very different view before, but for once I cannot be bothered to do a poll on it.

ProSilver was the original skin, before Charlie inexplicably changed the default to AeroGreen. As far as I'm aware there's no actual advantages to AeroGreen, and as it was different I found it was taking me slightly longer to navigate, spot stuff I hadn't read etc so I pretty much changed back straight away.

Ah, this reminds me of that old saying concerning this matter:

Phil, I had a go at changing the skin and did manage it. And managed to change it back immediately when I didn't like it! It doesn't have the jiggly blue arrows. It had jiggly lines but they were jiggling on things I 'd read. I'm trained up on jiggly arrows and must stick to what I know. But ta anyway. I'm in Leamington today, apropos to nothing! x

^Bump. So I was thinking about our beautiful, symmetric friend the palindrome and how some words are almost palindromes but not quite like BANANA. It then occurred to me that all words can be expressed as a sequence of palindromes ie BANANA = B + ANANA. TINNITUS = TINNIT + U + S. SENSELESSNESSES = S + E + N + SELES + S + N + ESSE + S etc, and it would be cool to award every word a score depending on how awesome it's palindromicity is. Obviously words with long palindromic sections relative to the length of the word should be scored highly. Here is a basic scoring system I've come up with called the rotcaF Factor:

rF = (Sum of squares of lengths of palindromic sections)/(Number of palindromic sections)

eg BANANA would score (1^2 + 5^2)/2 = 13. AGAMEMNON would score (3^2 + 3^2 + 3^2)/3 = 9.

Any wholly palindromic word would simply score the square of its length ie HANNAH scores 36. ROTAVATOR scores 81.
Any null palindrome (a word with no palindromic sections of more than 1 letter) would score 1.

Somehow I think this scoring system could be put to profitable use so feel free to suggest your own favourite palindromes to cash in on this lucrative deal! I'm not sure how phrases of more than one word should be scored or even in fact if they should be allowed a score. Thoughts?

I think you should define the rotcaf factor for a given word to be the maximum of the possible rFs. For example, if we take the word BABBAB, this could have an rF of 9 or 36 depending on where you split it. (I can't think of any real words where this matters.)

I make it 3, with
