Countdown recap for Tuesday 1 September 2009.

C1: Champion Chris Davies (2 wins, 201 points.) That guy from Apterous (he's actually from Merseyside, Apterous isn't a place in the UK) who ain't too bad at the game.
C2: Challenger Julie Lane. Julie is an art technician from High Wycombe who has a 4-foot corn snake called Marvin. She won the European Powerlifting Championships in 1992 and still holds 3 European records.
DC: Susie Dent and Paul Zenon. A musician. No. A magician, I heard wrong.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Round 1: C A E S R A N O R

C1: ROSACEA (7), a skin condition.
C2: RACERS (6)
OT: CANOERS (7) COARSEN (7) CORNEAS (7) COARSER (7) CORNERS (7) SCORNER (7)
Score: 7–0 (max 7)
Impressive start from Chris.

Round 2: M N W A E I N F E

C1: MEANIE (6)
C2: FAMINE (6)
DC: MANNIE (6)
Score: 13–6 (max 13)
A MANNIE is a Scottish term for a boy.

Round 3: N L R I E B A A U

C1: ABELIAN (7)
C2: UNREAL (6)
DC: BINAURAL (8)
Score: 20–6 (max 21)
ABELIAN came up last series and is a mathematical term. BINAURAL is relating to or involving both ears. Despite missing the max, Chris extends his lead.

Round 4: I E E S L Q E I R

C1: RESILE (6)
C2: RELIES (6)
Score: 26–12 (max 27)

Round 5: 75, 25, 2, 9, 7, 6. Target: 999.

C1: 999. (75+25+7+6-2)*9 (10)
C2: -
Score: 36–12 (max 37)

Teatime teaser: RUDESLOB -> BOULDERS

Round 6: O A D H O D S E S

C1: DASHED (6)
C2: HOODED (6)
DC: SHADES (6)
OT: DOODAHS (7)
Score: 42–18 (max 44)
No SADDOES then.

Round 7: T L N O A E T O E

C1: NOTELET (7)
C2: NETTLE (6)
Score: 49–18 (max 51)
The darren.

Round 8: A A E N P Z K U R

C1: PANZER (6)
C2: PRANK (5)
OT: PUNKER (6)
Score: 55–18 (max 57)

Round 9: E S S R O A I D G

C1: ROADIES (7)
C2: GRASSED (7)
DC: DIGRESS (7)
OT: ARGOSIES (8)
Score: 62–25 (max 65)
We don't really want to return to the days of Des O'Connor constantly being reminded that there is plenty of slang in the dictionary but the odd reminder (with ROADIES being questioned) is not too bad.

Round 10: 25, 8, 8, 1, 1, 10. Target: 626.

C1: 626. (10+8+8-1)*25+1 (10)
C2: -
Score: 72–25 (max 75)
The game looks beyond reasonable doubt with this spot from Chris. Julie will still want to put up a fight though.
Teatime teaser: GREYCOAT -> CATEGORY

Round 11: T M O E A N V O D

C1: ODONATE (7)
C2: NOTED (5)
OT: NOVATED (7)
Score: 79–25 (max 82)

Round 12: E E O J G R U F R

C1: FORGER (6)
C2: JUROR (5)
DC: FURORE (6)
OT: REFORGE (7)
Score: 85–25 (max 89)
A tad unlucky for Chris there. I wouldn't have risked it either.

Round 13: S T X I O M G I O

C1: MOIST (5)
C2: ixioms
OT: GISMO (5) OMITS (5) MOOTS (5)
Score: 90–25 (max 94)

Julie was slightly unlucky there as AXIOMS is in but unfortunately for her, IXIOMS isn't.
Round 14: 25, 9, 2, 3, 6, 10. Target: 550.

C1: 550. 9*3+(6/2)+25)*10 (10)
C2: 550. 2*10+(6/3)*25 (10)
Score: 100–35 (max 104)
Plenty of ways to do that one.

Round 15: K N I T R E I G N

C1 buzzes on 1 second to say TINKERING which is correct.
Score: 110–35 (max 114)
Chris scores an impressive 110 despite some low-scoring flat rounds. However, he will need to have some luck if he is to get close to Andrew's Hulme-ungous octochamp record of 930.

Thought DC were going to mention it as its a short step from FORGER and seems quite sensible. "The shards of Narsil were reforged" etc. Although I'm struggling to think of a non-LOTR example!
