Spoilers For Friday August 28th 2009

by James Robinson
Well today's the day many of us C4Countdowners and Apeterees have been waiting for.

Chris Davies makes his first appearance on the blue set. ;) :) :D Standing in his way is 3-times champ Ed Rossiter.

Based on Ed's previous 3 appearances and Chris' standing in the Apterous rankings, this should be a good battle royale on screen today.

Whether it is or not, we'll have to wait and see.

P.S. Is "Apterees" the correct plural for people who go on Apterous :?: If not, what is :?:

I've previously used the term "Apterites" and nobody has corrected me.

Best of luck to Chris. Looking at his performances on Apterous, I can't wait to see how he goes on in the studio. Ed seemed quite upbeat and confident at the end of yesterdays show, talking about becoming an Octochamp. Boy - I think he might be in for a shock. I don't have any inside info, but my guess is that Ed (and the following 7 contestants) will get blown away. Ed was OK yesterday when he cantered away but, judging by his first 2 games, I expect him to get increasingly red and flustered as the game goes on.

The main question for me is whether Chris can break any records, either in his first game or in his probable Octochamp run.

I think I must be the only person hoping Ed wins.

I imagine Andrew and Innis wouldn't mind!

True that. Think I must have some sort of innate sense of wanting the underdog to win. Definitely the only reason I wouldn't want Chris to win... :?

Seriously though. Retrospective Good luck! Even though I already know what happens!

I think Ed is decent enough not to get blown away, although I do expect Chris to win without having to break out the brown trousers. If we get flattish rounds and a lack of distracting scrabble phoneys I don't think Ed will miss too much, so he could be a tenacious opponent.

I do hope Chris gives him a good boinking though.

I think my favourite is apteroids.

Also, ESTROGENS for 9 as an alternative for the first numbers.

Why not Chris? All that apterous practice, thousands of games; it would be a travesty if Chris didn't become an octochamp. Plus he seems like a pretty cool guy. I expect Chris to break some sort of record, if not the highest score then probably highest percentage of maximums.

I think we get to see some rubik's cube skillz too. :?

Awesome. I hope he brought one with him and solves it during every round as well. Just to psyche out his opponent.

I've seen apterist used in some kind of semi-official capacity somewhere - I think it may have been the usergroup name on this forum when apterous was in early testing and access was limited.

Good spot on the numbers though.

It's a futile hope anyway of course. Next 8 afternoons are only going to be made interesting if there are records threatened.

Alternative second numbers: (75 + 7 + 1) x 8 - 4

100 x 7 = 700
8 x (4+1) = 40
700 - 40 = 660

seemed the obvious route

Ta Ben. Would be much obliged if someone would post the final result in a bit. Telly-less and my initial foray into the world of torrents has yielded nothing but the reality that mac os x 10.4 doesn't seem to run torrent programmes. Anyway... back to the spoilers...

100-7+5 = 98, x10 = 980
980 -6 -6 = 968

Was his cube lubed?

I didnt see a handshake, was it off camera, or did bad loser Ed just refuse?

Excellent debut Chris! You had a tough opponent to deal with but you got past him with (apparent) ease. FORAMINA ruled especially. Can't wait for next week!

Thanks everyone for the comments :)
I was so nervous, you could see it all over my face and it was sort of agonising for me to watch! Ed was clearly gutted about losing, but he was nothing but nice to me.

Seriously, it was terrifying. I was glad when it was over, but at the same time I couldn't wait to continue playing.

I think those numbers were made unnecessarily complicated - I went for (7 x 100) - 8 x (4 + 1) to make 660 and

100 - (7 - 5) x 10 = 980 then -6 -6 to make 968

Ooh - that sounded a bit rude - but I'm not a natural mathematician (left handed!!!!!!) so it made me happy!

Bugger - it also took me soooo long to type it that I'm hours past everyone else posting!!!!

Blimey! Talk about thrown in at the deep end, Chris. I would be pretty sure Ed would have been an octochamp, maybe even finalist, in a normal run. Maybe they may give him another go?

Excellent ton debut, Chris, well played sir. Must have been a heck of a lot of pressure, considering Ed was very good at the game, commiserations to Ed, he looked more gutted than any losing opponent I've seen, since Paul Gallen. At one stage I was worried it would go down to the conundrum.

Excellent cubeing (is that a word?) work under the studio lights/pressure. :D I've been trying to do that bugger of a cube for donkey's years, getting nowhere. Looking forward to the rest of your run Chris, hopefully you will join Andrew and Innis in the quarters. 8-)

Nice opener - I think nerves played their part (can't imagine you'd miss BROMIDE on apterous all that often (and just so it doesn't look like I'm trying to blag, I missed it too)), was amused by his attempts at number fudgery.

Good to hear there was a handshake, I was also wondering about this - he looked utterly homicidal to me.
