An interesting fact about soccer

Post by Jason Larsen »

We here in Seattle, Washington just got a major league soccer team. Those of you in the UK may know one of their supporters. Believe it or not, Alan Hinton, who played for Derby County and Nottingham Forest, used to be the coach for Seattle's minor league team. Some of you younger fans may know his nephew, Craig.

There is just something about heads of TV institutions and the 21st century that just happens to be a coincidence. Drew Carey, the current star of our version of The Price is Right and the host of US Whose Line is it Anyway in the US on Channel 5 US in the UK and Jeff Stelling both like soccer!

In the 20th century, soccer was not nearly as popular of a sport here as it is now. Why is it?

The USA TV stations traditionally show the big 3 US sports : Baseball, Gridiron & Basketball (over here we call them rounders, rugby & netball). After USA 94 the big US corporations realised the worldwide fan (and money) base that "soccer" has and are simply dragging themselves into the sport watched by rest of the world for commercial reasons.

It's true. Americans are only ever motivated by money, whereas us noble savages in every other country in the world only watch football for reasons as pure as the driven snow up Faustino Asprilla's nose. How insightful of you to recognise this remarkable dichotomy!
