Longest word with no anagrams

Cerebral distractions of every kind, mostly but not exclusively Countdown-related.

Longest word with no anagrams

Post by Adam Dexter »

My challenge is, to find the longest word that has no anagrams (excluding 1/2 letter anagrams)

For example:

Duck, 3 letters, has 1 anagram using any letters.

CUD

My highest is 6 letters.. any beaters?

CUD
Sorry, don't get this at all. DUCK has 4 letters, not 3. And CUD isn't an anagram of DUCK.

Do you mean find the longest word from which no other words of three letters or more can be made?

Yes I do. I knew my phrasing was confusing, which was why I included the example. However, this hasn't seemed to work. Although you do now understand, so maybe it did! :D

Well you can pluralise that! Erm GRR is not in the OED (well not mine anyway, but mine is a concise one). Hmmm.... I was thinking of a non-pluralised word anyway :P

If you mean absolutely no sub-words, I think the Scrabble solution to this is SYZYGY. In French it's XYLOL. This one is a bit better, although it's one letter shorter you can play without a blank. So on the first move, if you have WXYLOLQ the best play is XYLOL for 66 - not only that, it's the only word possible, they only other plays are to play it in the four other possible positions (or nine if you count horizontal and vertical separately).
If you cut a gandiseeg in half, do you get two gandiseegs or two halves of a gandiseeg?

Congrats. SYZYGY was my word. That took approx 54 mins from OP. Too easy methinks.

The best I could come up with was QUICK. (Unless ICK is a word). I thought of MUUMUU as well, but umm, I don't think that's allowed. I think I'm right in saying that, as well as being longer, Syzygy is also better than Quick in that it doesn't contain any 2-letter sub-word anagrams either. Quick is the longest countdown-valid word though :D (so far, anyway).

GRRRL is in (no GRR), but there's also GRRL.

QUICK - ICK is Countdown-valid.
SYZYGY is valid in Countdown (though currently the letters distribution renders it impossible to come out).
MUUMUU has sub-words MUM, UHM.

Yeah if you exclude two letter words you can get longer than six, IMO. I'm too tired to be bothered now.

Oh well... Just realised the double negative in his post... therefore meaning that he does think it does... so why post that on this thread? Oh well... I'll just go and hang myself.

The double negative doesn't have much to do with it, it's more the fact that everyone who plays Countdown knows that RELATIONS = ORIENTALS = TENSORIAL.
so why post that on this thread?
To cheer people up.
