
On this in 1950 English singer, songwriter, musician, and human rights activist Peter Gabriel was born.Having attended Charterhouse Public School, he came to prominence as the original frontman of the rock band Genesis along with his classmates Tony Banks Mike Rutherford and Anthony Phillips, After the departure of Anthony Phillips an unknown musician by the name of Phil Collins joined the band as their drummer. In 1975 Peter Gabriel left Genesis to pursue a solo career which was a huge success. In 1986 Peter Gabriel went from being a cult artist to a mainstream musician when he released the highly success and critically acclaimed 5th album So that became a favourite amongst his fans and topping the album charts in 1986, the album itself sold over 5 million making this his most successful in his career, the lead song Sledgehammer was a huge success peaking at no 4 but hitting the top of the Billboard charts making this his only US no 1. The song's video won a record nine MTV Video Music Awards at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards and Best British Video at the 1987 Brit Awards. The song also saw Gabriel nominated for three Grammy Awards for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance, Record of the Year and Song of the Year. In a 2005 poll conducted by Channel 4, the music video was ranked second on their list of the 100 Greatest Pop Videos. His work with Amnesty International became well known with a concert tour featuring musicians such as Tracy Chapman Sting and Bruce Springsteen. Peter Gabriel is still active in the music business with no plans to retire as of yet.
