Spoilers for Tuesday 1st October 2024 (Series 90, Heat 60)
I was surprised to see dation disallowed. It's become such a Countdown word that I had no idea it was one of the "new" words that recently got ditched. But it does show that getting rid of these words makes a "real life" difference and not just to hardcore Apterites.
Also FAGGOTS in round 8 as a beater. Maybe DC saw it but didn't want to say.

yeah seemed a suprising miss - suspect it was a "don't go there"

Did they comment that dation was in but now it is not, or just disallowed it without comment?
Have they mentioned the dictionary cull on the show at all?

No mention, just disallowed (it was shorter than the winning word anyway) but it did look like an odd cut, so they may have had a conversation with the contestantMartin Hurst wrote: ↑Wed Oct 02, 2024 7:08 am Did they comment that dation was in but now it is not, or just disallowed it without comment?

Susie's comment disallowing LUMIERE was puzzling. It would seem she looked at everything except the definition. A quick search tells me that Lumière, capital L, is a photographic process, not a light show in France. So I would make out that Graeme was trying the French word in the hope that it's naturalised into English.
It seems the phrase "son et lumière" is naturalised, but not "lumière" by itself.

Bit of over-analysis here. I don’t think her comment was puzzling at all. She was probably talking about the Lumières as described here https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lumi%C3%A8res, as well as the different kinds of Lumières (the light shows) held in France. Nothing wrong with her comment.Stewart Gordon wrote: ↑Mon Oct 28, 2024 11:32 pm Susie's comment disallowing LUMIERE was puzzling. It would seems she looked at everything except the definition. (Just corrected a tpyo in my earlier comment.)
But does the name of this movement derive from the names of people, or the French word for light? I would have thought the latter.
OTOH, the Lumière photographic process is named after two brothers.
I've just rewatched it and Susie clearly said "named after a person". So I stand by my position that Susie made a mistake.

I think this comment is a bit harsh and overblown. Susie abided by the rules (no proper nouns), explained the word’s usage, said it’s named after a person and disallowed the word. Strictly speaking it is named after two people with a shared surname, but it does not mean Susie saying “named after a person” is a mistake. She did nothing wrong.Stewart Gordon wrote: ↑Sun Nov 03, 2024 4:37 pm (Just corrected a tpyo in my earlier comment.)

The process is named after the brothers, the light shows refer to the Lumiere lights.

I completely disagree, because she didn't mention the photographic process. She said "we talk about Lumières in France". Maybe the photographic process was invented in France, but I don't see that anybody would say "Lumières in France" meaning this. She was quite clearly, as I hear it, claiming that the "Lumières in France" (whether this means light shows or the philosophical movement) are named after a person.
