It's a method that is taught in schools to work out division sums. Say in this case, the sum is working out how many 8s go into 896, then the 8 would be placed at the side of the "bus stop", with the 896 underneath it. You then work out how many 8s go into 8, so 1, then 8s into 9, 1 but with a remainder 1 which is carried over, and placed before, the 6, meaning that you work out how many 8s go into 16, making 2. This is pretty much what I did, saw immediately that it was 112 x 8 so just looked to make the 112 from the remaining numbers, looked at the 6 first and got nowhere then tried 4 x 7 x 4 and got quite a surprise that it was 112. Then spent 20 seconds checking it over and over again and I was still not totally convinced when I gave my method.
