Countdown in Edinburgh (CO:EDI) - Saturday 15th October 2022

Post by James Robinson »

OCK AYE!! WE’RE COMING BACK NORTH OF THE BORDER!!!

With no event in Scotland since early 2019, it certainly has felt very English (with a touch of Irish) centric, but I’m delighted to announce the rebirth of COEDI, or Countdown in Edinburgh!!!πŸ˜„πŸ˜ŽπŸ‘πŸ§ πŸ•›πŸ•‘πŸ” πŸ”’πŸ΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ ΏπŸ΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ ΏπŸ΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ Ώ

Venue:
Our venue is the New Melville Bridge Club just to the west of Edinburgh city centre. The address is 1 Pinkhill, Edinburgh, EH12 7BA. (For a look yourselves, go here) It is right next to a bus stop, which has many different services from Edinburgh city centre.

General Overview:
Presented by James Robinson (yes, I'm flying solo for the first time), using the "Lincoln" format (yes, another first for me) and playing along with big screen virtual studio graphics at the end of the day:

As with all Lincoln style events, players will be put 3 to a table, with one person hosting the other 2, and everyone flipping around, so that everyone has a go at hosting. That will happen on three occasions, then a grand final will happen in front of all the attendees.

Prices/Rates:
COEDI will take place on Saturday 15 October -- doors open at 10am for a prompt 11am start, finishing at around 5:45-6pm. The admission price is set at Β£10. We also hope to have the bar open like we did last time, which has some nice treats available at very reasonable costs, more on that when I have it fully confirmed.πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

We also intend on having a meal at COSMO Edinburgh on the Saturday night at 7:30, into on the restaurant is here: https://www.cosmo-restaurants.co.uk/res ... _edinburgh

As per usual, payments are available:
- By PayPal (https://www.paypal.me/JRTerrier7/10) (DON'T FORGET - Choose the "Family/Friends" option on payment.);
- By phone (0781 775 0544);

Parkruns start at 9.30am in Scotland right? Could be a bit of a dash to get to the event in time but sure we can manage it.

As well as Oriam (which is way out to the west of the city), there are Edinburgh, Portobello, Holyrood Park (quite new), but all similarly a few miles from the venue.

Well, we’re now heading into the final SEVEN DAYS!!!🀩🀩🀩7️⃣7️⃣7οΈβƒ£πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

So, I thought I’d give a few more details about the little intricacies of next Saturday.😎😎😎

Firstly, we will not be serving lunch at the venue, but there is a Subway and a Sainsbury’s within 10 minutes walk of the venue.πŸ₯ͺπŸ₯ͺπŸ₯ͺ

There will be a bar open at the venue, but alcohol can’t be served until noon, as that’s Scottish rules. Also, it will be contactless only, so no cash, please.πŸ’³πŸ’³πŸ’³

The event will start at 11am, giving the Parkrunners extra time to sort themselves out, as they don’t start until 9:30am, I believe.πŸƒπŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ

Lunch will be a 1 hour period from when the last table finishes their first round games, although if your table finishes earlier, feel free to sort yourselves out.πŸ‘ŒπŸ‘ŒπŸ‘Œ

There will be a quiz during lunch, which I’m hoping might be a hybrid…, more on that later.πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”

Speaking of hybrids, I’m intending on making this event the first Lincoln/Bristol hybrid event, where we’ll have a Bristol-style final phase. Again, more on that next week.😎😎😎

But, I’m looking forward to seeing you all next week, this should be a fantastic tournament!!πŸ•›πŸ•‘πŸ” πŸ”’πŸ΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ ΏπŸ΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ ΏπŸ΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ Ώ

Wait, what?

By "Bristol-style final phase" you don't mean splitting the standings table up into divisions after a small number of games and then playing finals stages within each division, do you? My impression is that this divisioned system, common at Bristol-style events, does not enjoy widespread support for reasons extensively discussed before.

I don't know if it's my place to speak up here as I'm not attending the event - I've been to Edinburgh events before but couldn't make the date this time. However, if I were one of the 28 entrants who had paid for entry, accommodation and transport expecting something like COLIN, as the main post has described for months, and then a week before the event I read an announcement that instead it's going to have a "Bristol-style final phase" that sounds very much like that divisioned thing, I'd feel a bit cheated, like I'd fallen for a bait-and-switch.

Have I incorrectly assumed what "Bristol-style final phase" means?

He might just mean that the two people in the final play the same game as each other.

Joking aside, I did wonder if it was just an unusually-worded way of saying "the final between the top two will have the selections put on the big screen".

That's very much what I'm hoping it means!

Edit - from original post

Which sounds just like the events I enjoy most, and having the grand final on a big screen sounds like a good idea :)

At least one person (Colin Peet) is intending to do Holyrood. I'm sticking with Oriam cos a) it's right by my hotel, b) I'm meeting a friend to do Holyrood the following week, and c) I need an O for my alphabet!

But guess it depends where people are staying - if you're central, Holyrood may well be easier.

I'm happy to do Oriam. Will run there from my accomodation (near venue) and make use of the changing facilities afterwards. Do you have a plan for getting to the venue from there after Fiona? Happy to share a taxi with you if buses aren't an option.

Sounds good - yep I think there are showers and stuff and Oriam. Dunno what the transport options are - happy to taxi, or if not I'll probably have my bike with me, but too old for backies!

Well, I just want to have something a little bit different to finish with, especially considering I'm hosting, and I quite like a challenge.

Nothing divisional, but I think having something a bit unique to end the day would be something different.

All will be revealed soon enough... 8-) 8-) 8-)

Following various logistical shenanigans, I'm now at a hotel a few miles from the parkrun, so will be cycling there, so will cycle back to the venue (which is between parkrun and new hotel) - but doesn't look too far to uber for you and Maus.

Might now end up having to renege on this - and on attending the event - because of a worsening home repair issue. Will see how things pan out.

As a question for anyone that was there to help recappers, since the majority of R14 was missing does anyone know if there was any answer from either guy?

What does this mean for the final finishing positions please? Need to update the FOCAL standings but not sure what people's final finishing position is based on this.

In the final round, if you beat the person above you, you go above them. So Callum, Zubair, Natalie, Stewart, Steven and Colin all leapfrog their final opponents. If the higher ranked player won, then no change.

Would be interesting to see how the final table would look if it was fully sorted by wins then points. If I get bored later on...

Okay, thanks, that's complicated! Will sort out a final standings list when I get chance.

Both declared 720.
Alan made a mistake.
Conor did (4+1)*the rest
That’s Round 13…, 14R rememberβ€¦πŸ˜›

On 29 seconds, Alan did a joke guess of HALALCORE, based on the first oneβ€¦πŸ€£πŸ€£πŸ€£
Oh yeah! Used to thinking of R14 as the last numbers round.

Will save you the trouble:

1 Conor Travers
2 Alan Young
3 Matt Gould
4 Callum Todd
5 Tom Carey
6 Eddie McCullagh
7 Fiona Titcombe
8 George Armstrong
9 Fred Whibley
10 Shireen Ahmed
11 Phil Hannan
12 Nathan Pace
13 Jane Peet
14 Zubair Patel
15 Darren Godfrey
16 Adam Beach
17 Piaras Carney
18 Natalie McCluskey
19 Mike Springett
20 Damian McEvoy
21 Vicci Smith
22 Stewart Gordon
23 Paul Craib
24 Steven Grady
25 Sean Fletcher
26 Ikenna Oguguo
27 Euan Crabb
28 Iain Sime
29 Michael Armstrong
30 Colin Peet
31 Chloe Jones

I won't work out the updated points totals, coz it'll start to look a bit messy as the table is no longer strictly wins then points.

But on a positive note, I know some people were concerned by the hybrid concept, but I have to say as a nice little extra game it worked rather well.

Then I decided to go to Bristol format for the main final. As Conor had 6/6, he went straight to the final, the matches were positional, with the exception of Alan v Matt for 2nd/3rd, as the winner of that would play Conor in the grand final.
I think it's a great idea to try squeezing in a 7th game classroom style, but why not make it count towards the overall rankings in the same way they the rest of the games did? That seems way more fair to me.

Did Conor sit out that round? And Alan Young played in all rounds including the final?

I'm bored enough so here's how that table would look (the numbers at the end indicate positional difference from the actual final table):

1. Conor Travers 6 389 +-0
2. Alan Young 6 378 +-0
3. Callum Todd 5 494 +2
4. Eddie McCullagh 5 481 +2
5. George Armstrong 5 455 +3
6. Shireen Ahmed 5 376 +4
7. Matt Gould 5 366 -4
8. Nathan Pace 5 334 +4
9. Tom Carey 4 491 -5
10. Fiona Titcombe 4 418 -3
11. Fred Whibley 4 410 -2
12. Zubair Patel 4 409 +3
13. Adam Beach 4 394 +3
14. Natalie McCluskey 4 362 +5
15. Phil Hannan 4 335 +6
16. Damian McEvoy 4 326 +4
17. Jane Peet 4 290 +4
18. Steven Grady 3 395 +7
19. Darren Godfrey 3 390 +5
20. Stewart Gordon 3 389 +3
21. Piaras Carney 3 358 -4
22. Ikenna Oguguo 3 353 +4
22. Iain Sime 3 353 +6
24. Mike Springett 3 344 -6
25. Paul Craib 3 270 -3
26. Vicci Smith 3 261 -5
27. Sean Fletcher 2 385 -3
28. Euan Crabb 2 319 -1
29. Colin Peet 2 253 +2
30. Michael Armstrong 2 198 -1
31. Chloe Jones 1 233 -1

A couple of things to note:

Alan and Matt were the only two to win 5/6 games. This fit nicely so that they would complete the podium spots with Conor regardless of who won their game, whereas in this table, Matt would unfortunately drop down to 8th. Another thing to bear in mind is that the first 6 games were all 9Rs, whereas the final Bristol style game was a 14R. If you wanted to make the final game affect the whole table, I think it's only fair to keep it the same format as all the other games, otherwise it carries significantly greater weight as more points are available.

Fair point. Although on Saturday we had the slightly unusual circumstance of the longest game of the day having by far the least effect on your standing (zero effect for most, and just 1 place gained/lost for the rest)

I already gave a head start on the table as well as the Lincoln games with Round 2 needing to be done. If you want to add the positional differences to the table, you're free to do so.

Also there are names who aren't really linked to any page despite them being prevalent in a lot of places:

Two examples are Fred W - who ofc has helped out on Zoomdown and is in his own right an Apterite - and Vicci Smith - who's appeared at other co-events.

Is it a disrespectful move to give them both their own pages, along with anyone else to display their co-event adventures like Matt Bayfield, the Hamers, Amie Bateen, or Chris Hare?

Some people probably won't mind, some would. I'd say if they don't have their own page, best to leave it unless they say it's fine.

Alright then, at least for future reference if anyone ELSE wants to ask any of the ppl if they want a page then the guys are:

Fred Whibley
Vicci Smith
Michael Armstrong
Colin Peet

If you have any connections to 'em, ask nicely about it. For now I will leave that as is now.

I wouldn't say it's disrespectful to start a wiki page for someone. Contestants get them automatically anyway, and I think it makes sense to make them for at least prominent CO-eventers / Apterites etc.

With that in mind, I would say that if someone has indicated that they specifically don't want a wiki page then go along with that, but otherwise I don't think explicit permission need be sought in all cases.

It's a bit of a privacy invasion to go making wiki pages for people who have only been to events. Also what value does it add to the wiki?

Oh he had a page up before? If he wanted it deleted then I won't bother making one if he doesn't want it.

Sounds reasonable enough.

Ah yeah, I can see the perspective on this one. Think for now it'll be better to just not have a page linked to any of the aforementioned names to at least make it look better. Not a big fan of leaving it red like that tbh

Yes, Conor was my Rachel for that match.

And yes, Alan was the only player to play 8 games.

Alright the Lincoln stuff is all done for this bit: https://wiki.apterous.org/COEDI_2022

I'd be willing to get any advice for recapping the Bristol section as I've not really known what to do for that bit.
