Friday 19th November 2021 (Series 84, Preliminary 104)

Post by Rhys Benjamin »

Annedown CIII.

Today is International Men's Day and also World Toilet Day. Anne is trying to make a joke, but Rachel points out that there's serious issues behind them, although neither Anne nor Rachel mention the most crucial fact: suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45. So there are important issues at stake here and I'm very much not a fan of Anne dismissing them. In light of today's events about Austria entering YET ANOTHER lockdown, mental health matters.

Countdown recap for Friday 19 November 2021.

C1: Champion Jack Millard (2 wins, 159 points.) 17. Wearing the reddest red shirt I've ever seen.
C2: Challenger Rob O'Malley. 49. From Shipton-on-Stout. In his 40s but "not for much longer" says Anne. Works for "an outsourcing company that provides contact centre services and [he] wins new clients for [his] business." (Eh??) Has two degrees, neither of them interesting, apparently.
DC: Susie Dent and Christopher Biggins.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: M N T A A I R E C

Jack: MARINATE (8)
Rob: MARINE (6)
DC: ANIMATER (8)
OT: CARINATE (8) CRANIATE (8) MANICATE (8) MARANITE (8) MARANTIC (8)
Score: 8–0 (max 8, jos 8)
Darren-o-meter: 0/1 (0%)

Jack takes an early lead with MARINATE, whilst Christopher's ANIMATER is allowed as a dodgy alternative spelling of ANIMATOR.

Round 2: T U L R I S T E R

Jack: RESULT (6)
Rob: TURTLES (7)
DC: SURLIER (7) TRUSTIER (8) SULTRIER (8)
OT: RUTTIERS (8) SLUTTIER (8) SURTITLE (8)
Score: 8–7 (max 16, jos 16)
Darren-o-meter: 0/2 (0%)

Rob hits back with a good seven. TURTLE can be used as a verb, although I have to confess I'm only familiar with it as a verb in the context of an obscure Twitch streamer I sometimes watch, i.e. writhing around upside down on a turtle's shell, I guess?

Round 3: 50, 10, 5, 7, 1, 2. Target: 832.

Jack: 833. (50 − 1) × (10 + 7) (7)
Rob: 832. Mistake in working.
RR: 832. (10 + 5 + 1) × (50 + 2) (10)
Score: 15–7 (max 26, jos 26)

Rob and Jack have exactly the same solution to 833... but Rob tries to take away 1, forgetting he's already used it. Whoops!!

Teatime teaser: DATETERM -> MATTERED

Round 4: H P T A O D E N L

Jack: PLANTED (7)
Rob: PLANTED (7)
DC: LOATHED (7) PHONATED (8)
Score: 22–14 (max 34, jos 34)
Darren-o-meter: 1/3 (33%)

Our first darren of the day but it's only Susie who sees it, as both contestants are firmly PLANTED on seven.

Round 5: S N S E A A Y E P

Jack: SYNAPSE (7)
Rob: PAYEES (6)
DC: PAEANS (6)
OT: PAYSANS (7) PEANESS (7)
Score: 29–14 (max 41, jos 41)
Darren-o-meter: 1/4 (25%)

Jack extends his lead whilst Susie has fun with vowels.

Round 6: 25, 50, 100, 75, 10, 7. Target: 594.

Jack: 591.
Rob: 592. (not written down) (100 − 75) × 25 − 50 + 10 + 7 (7)
RR: n/a. Wants "a few more seconds", but doesn't return to it after the anecdote.
OT: 593. 50 × 10 + 100 − 7 (7)
Score: 29–21 (max 48, jos 48)

Christopher talks about his time on I'm A Celebrity.

Round 7: R B L I A E N I T

Jack: RELIANT (7) (not written down)
Rob: TRAIN (5)
DC: AIRLINE (7) INERTIAL (8)
OT: BILINEAR (8)
Score: 36–21 (max 56, jos 56)
Darren-o-meter: 1/5 (20%)

Jack restores the damage done to his 15-point lead in the last round.

Round 8: V G S E U C T E R

Jack: RESCUE (6) (safe)
Rob: guester (risky)
DC: GESTURE (7) CURVETS (7)
OT: VESTURE (7)
Score: 42–21 (max 63, jos 63)
Darren-o-meter: 1/6 (17%)

Rob's risk of GUESTER^ is not a bad one, but it suddenly becomes a facepalm when Christopher tells him GESTURE was right there...

Round 9: 25, 8, 6, 8, 1, 3. Target: 115.

Jack: 115. (not written down) (8 + 8 − 1) × 6 + 25 (10)
Rob: 115. (25 − 8 + 6) × (8 − 3) (10)
Score: 52–31 (max 73, jos 73)

Some good LNAFPs here if anyone wants them.

Teatime teaser: HOMOSAPS -> SHAMPOOS

Round 10: K D N U I T D U I

Jack: UNIT (4)
Rob: UNIT (4)
DC: DINT (4) UNDID (5)
OT: DUKUN (5) IDDUT (5) NITID (5) UNKUT (5)
Score: 56–35 (max 78, jos 78)
Darren-o-meter: 1/7 (14%)

Oh dear. Next!

Round 11: R M R O I E D U N

Jack: MOURNED (7)
Rob: MINDER (6)
DC: rumored (US spelling)
OT: DOURINE (7) DRUMINE (7) MINORED (7) MOURNER (7) MURRINE (7) NEUROID (7) NURDIER (7) RONDEUR (7) RONDURE (7) ROUNDER (7) UNMIRED (7) UNORDER (7)
Score: 63–35 (max 85, jos 85)
Darren-o-meter: 1/8 (13%)

Jack extends his lead once more with a billion more 7s going unnoticed.

OOW Susie talks about things she "discovered" surprisingly in the dictionary recently.

Round 12: S R I O C S G E A

Jack: GASSIER (7)
Rob: SCORIAE (7) (risky)
DC: CORSAGES (8)
OT: ARGOSIES (8)
Score: 70–42 (max 93, jos 93)
Darren-o-meter: 1/9 (11%)

Sevens for both contestants, and a gap of 28 means that Rob now needs to win with at least an 8 in the next round now to stay in the game.

Round 13: F N D E E A T E P

Jack: PANTED (6)
Rob: DEFEAT (6)
DC: PEDANT (6)
OT: PEENTED (7)
Score: 76–48 (max 100, jos 99)
Darren-o-meter: 2/10 (20%)

Oh, Susie - so close to a max! But Jack has now won 3 games, blimey, the curse of the champion's chair may well be over...

Round 14: 25, 75, 50, 100, 8, 9. Target: 767.

Jack: 767. 75 × 9 + 100 − 8 (10)
Rob: 767. Mistake in working.
Score: 86–48 (max 110, jos 109)

This is not quite an Ariana, but it's so easy that, naturally, someone misses it.

Round 15: E D G E D E L T A

Jack buzzes on 1.5 second to say DELEGATED which is correct.
Final Score: 96–48 (max 120, jos 119)

*Hey siri, play Giorno's Theme*

A raw score of 109 out of 120 is very, very good. 7 maxes too, not bad at all.

He'll be back on Monday - can he be a late entry into the finals? Let's wait and see.
