Friday 29th October 2021 (Series 84, Preliminary 89)

Post by Rhys Benjamin »

Annedown LXXXVIII and I have 5 episodes to get through thanks to a lack of sleep, too much work, and too many evenings out - 3 in a week!

Countdown recap for Friday 29 October 2021.

Anne tells us not to answer the door on Halloween. Rachel suspects any screaming from her house will be because of her giving birth.

C1: Champion Edward Ratcliffe (1 win, 81 points.) Record manager. Not a showbiz thing.
C2: Challenger Thomas Joy. Countdown fanboy whose hair is definitely not naturally that colour. Creative director - literally anything, apparently. Now works in smart homes, although I suspect this will fall flat on Anne. Camp as Christmas. I love it.
DC: Susie Dent and Len Goodman, who's run out of shirts and suits so is now wearing what appears to be one of Susie's jumpers. Susie is wearing a tight-fitting tiger outfit. Again, camp as Christmas, and again, I love it.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

DC: PAUSERS (7)
OT: ASPERSE (7) PARESES (7) PERSEAS (7) PERUSES (7) PESEWAS (7) PRAESES (7) REPASES (7) RESPEWS (7) SERAPES (7) SPEWERS (7) UREASES (7)
Score: 6–6 (max 7, jos 7)
Darren-o-meter: 0/1 (0%)

Len gets - and he finally says this - a "sev-ENNNNN!". Meanwhile, all I'm interested in is whether ARSEWIPES is a valid touch 9...?

Round 2: B A T L O I G U T

Edward: BLOAT (5)
Thomas: GUILT (5)
DC: BAILOUT (7)
OT: OBITUAL (7) TUGBOAT (7)
Score: 11–11 (max 14, jos 14)
Darren-o-meter: 0/2 (0%)

Fives for both contestants are overshadowed by a trio of sevens.

Round 3: 100, 75, 7, 4, 2, 2. Target: 982.

Edward: -
Thomas: 983. (7 + 2) × 100 + 75 + 4 × 2 (7)
RR: 982. (after ads) 7 × 2 × (75 + 2) + 4 − 100 (10)
Score: 11–18 (max 24, jos 24)

Nul points for Edward, giving Thomas an early lead.

Teatime teaser: SACKPINT -> PANSTICK

Round 4: I S N E D T E H P

Edward: DEPTHS (6)
Thomas: PINTS (5)
DC: DESTINE (7) STIPEND (7)
OT: DESPITE (7) ENDITES (7) ETHIDES (7) HEISTED (7) HINDEST (7) PENEIDS (7) PENIDES (7) SEPTINE (7) SITHEED (7) TEENISH (7)
Score: 17–18 (max 31, jos 31)
Darren-o-meter: 0/3 (0%)

Both contestants miss a plethora of sevens, whilst Edward has three tries at pronouncing "DEPTHS" correctly.

Round 5: G N D A I I F M G

Edward: FADING (6)
Thomas: FADING (6)
DC: IMAGING (7)
Score: 23–24 (max 38, jos 38)
Darren-o-meter: 1/4 (25%)

IMAGING is the darrenic seven and it's the first darren of the day.

Round 6: 100, 2, 3, 1, 8, 2. Target: 622.

Edward: 622. (2 × 100 + 8) × 3 − 2 (10)
Thomas: 621.
Score: 33–24 (max 48, jos 48)

Edward takes 10 on Thomas's numbers game to take back the lead.

Len is doing his 30th series of Dancing With The Stars in the US and talks about how you're considered to be intelligent with a British accent in America, and denies he's a cockney, with him being born in Farnborough in Kent thanks to a combination of difficult labour and a bomb causing his potential womb exit location to be moved from Wales to London to Farnborough in a day.

Round 7: L S D E U R T I F

Edward: RUSTLED (7)
Thomas: FUTILE (6)
DC: TRIFLES (7) FLUSTER (7) LUSTIER (7) FUSTIER (7)
OT: DILUTERS (8) STUDLIER (8)
Score: 40–24 (max 56, jos 55)
Darren-o-meter: 1/5 (20%)

Susie drops a point for the first time today as she misses both eights.

Thomas is from Wokingham, so Anne and he talks about their mutual love of the theatre there. He also does some acting.

Round 8: M D E K E I W C A

Edward: WICKED (6)
Thomas: WICKED (6)
DC: MIDWEEK (7)
Score: 46–30 (max 63, jos 62)
Darren-o-meter: 2/6 (33%)

Lovely darren here, which gets the "are you sure that's not hyphenated" treatment... I have never considered it as hyphenated. Oh well.

Round 9: 50, 100, 25, 75, 9, 10. Target: 307.

Edward: 309. 75 ÷ 25 × 100 + 9 (7)
Thomas: 309. 25 × 10 + 50 + 9 (7)
RR: 307. (100 × 75 − 50) ÷ 25 + 9 (10)
Score: 53–37 (max 73, jos 72)

*cries in 4 large fan*

Teatime teaser: BOTHBARE -> BATHROBE

Round 10: T R O A N D O E S

Edward: STANDER (7) (risky)
Thomas: TORNADOS (8)
DC: TORNADOES (18)
OT: ROADSTONE (18)
Score: 53–45 (max 91, jos 90)
Darren-o-meter: 2/7 (29%)

Thomas picks the wrong plural for TORNADO(E)S, costing him 10 points and a chance to take the lead.

Round 11: L M S E O R A B P

Edward: RAMBLES (7)
Thomas: RAMBLES (7)
DC: PROBLEMS (8) PROB (4)
OT: LEPROMAS (8) PLEROMAS (8)
Score: 60–52 (max 99, jos 98)
Darren-o-meter: 2/8 (25%)

Sevens for both contestants keeps the gap at 8 points.

OOW Susie talks about words that aren't related when you might think they are, expanding on font and womb/tomb.

Round 12: R O E D T I N S C

Edward: CRETINS (7)
Thomas: SCORED (6)
DC: CONSIDER (8) CENTROIDS (18)
OT: DOCTRINES (18)
Score: 67–52 (max 117, jos 116)
Darren-o-meter: 2/9 (22%)

Edward's CRETINous seven takes the lead out to 15, as Susie finds the tough nine but not the more common one.

Round 13: A P I T C Y E N S

Edward: TAPES (5)
Thomas: PECTINS (7) (try)
DC: peacity INSPECT (7) SYNAPTIC (8)
OT: PATIENCY (8) PYCNITES (8)
Score: 67–59 (max 125, jos 124)
Darren-o-meter: 2/10 (20%)

And Thomas hits back straight away with a dodgy plural, which Susie decides to allow after a bit of dithering.

Round 14: 50, 5, 9, 2, 8, 9. Target: 348.

Edward: 348. (not written down) (8 − 9 ÷ 9) × 50 − 2 (10)
Thomas: 349.
Score: 77–59 (max 135, jos 134)

Thomas's easy-one-please selection backfires and Edward avoids a crucial conundrum.

Round 15: R E D F R I N G E

Edward buzzes on 17.25 seconds to say DEFERRING which is correct.
Final Score: 87–59 (max 145, jos 144)

Edward takes the conundrum to boost his points total and win by a slightly flattering 28 points.

Join us again to see if Edward can make it three. Goodbye.
