Monday 27th September 2021 (Series 84, Preliminary 65)

Post by Rhys Benjamin »

Annedown LXIV on a day where the British public have managed to manufacture a crisis where there wasn't one, and Channel 4 may or may not have broadcast this episode live given they've been having broadcast problems. Indeed, this appeared to have no subtitles on my All4 iPad.

Countdown recap for Monday 27 September 2021.

Anne tells us it's Google's birthday from 1998, or at least they think so. It was also Anne's birthday yesterday, although she claims she'd forgotton on Friday.

C1: Champion Daaniyal Ali (2 wins, 162 points.) Still has an encyclopaedic knowledge of translating dates into days of the week and whose birthday. 26 September 1944 was a Tuesday, and Anne Robinson was born on it.
C2: Challenger Kirsty Bowen. Originally from the West Midlands. Looks about 25, but is 41. Internal marketer for a building society. So Anne asks her for tips - Kirsty thinks she should work on her charm.
DC: Susie Dent and Stanley Johnson.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

R01: E A E T B N P O L
R02: T I S O N D I M U
R03: 25, 50, 2, 5, 9, 8. Target: 791.

R06: 50, 100, 7, 1, 8, 10. Target: 561.
R07: H R S E A M R U E
R08: P E W T I A G M O
R09: 75, 50, 9, 10, 8, 6. Target: 675.
TTT: LOBESLICE - "When it comes to fighting, he's got the stomach for it."

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: E A E T B N P O L

Daaniyal: NOTABLE (7)
Kirsty: BEATEN (6)
DC: BEANPOLE (8) ANTELOPE (8)
OT: OPENABLE (8)
Score: 7–0 (max 8, jos 8)
Darren-o-meter: 0/1 (0%)

Stanley gets BEANPOLE - and Susie even says it was Stanley, not her - which gets Stanley a round of applause! Application in the post when?

Round 2: T I S O N D I M U

Daaniyal: SOUND (5)
Kirsty: MOUNTS (6)
DC: diminution(?) UNMOIST (7)
OT: DISMOUNT (8) NITIDOUS (8)
Score: 7–6 (max 16, jos 15)
Darren-o-meter: 0/2 (0%)

I'm going to be completely defeated by the lack of subtitles here, not least because I had no idea what Stanley said here.

Round 3: 25, 50, 2, 5, 9, 8. Target: 791.

Daaniyal: 791. 8 × 2 × 50 − 9 (10)
Kirsty: 791. 8 × 2 × 50 − 9 (10)
Score: 17–16 (max 26, jos 25)

thank u, next

Teatime teaser: MODERATOS -> ASTRODOME

Round 4: R A L E R I S A D

Daaniyal: RADIALS (7)
Kirsty: DERAILS (7)
DC: SALARIED (8)
OT: RADIALES (8) RISALDAR (8)
Score: 24–23 (max 34, jos 33)
Darren-o-meter: 0/3 (0%)

SALARIED is an excellent spot from Susie, although I'm surprised at its verbiness.

Round 5: I O F S Y O T A E

Daaniyal: FOOTIES (7)
Kirsty: FEAST (5)
DC: FEISTY (6)
OT: FOOTSIE (7) FOYAITE (7) OOFIEST (7)
Score: 31–23 (max 41, jos 40)
Darren-o-meter: 0/4 (0%)

I'll be quite surprised if Daaniyal was 100% aware of the meaning of FOOTIES (those socks which don't reach your ankles), but he extends the lead out to eight points.

Round 6: 50, 100, 7, 1, 8, 10. Target: 561.

Daaniyal: 561. 8 × 7 × 10 + 1 (10)
Kirsty: 561. 8 × 7 × 10 + 1 (10)
Score: 41–33 (max 51, jos 50)

A nice LNAFP from both contestants here.

Farmer, conservationist, game show expert, former I'm A Celebrity contestant - Stanley is certainly a personality in his own right. He talks about his experience in the Aussie jungle and a live trial involving passing a bull's testicle from mouth to mouth. He also talks about the time he stood in a general election and it didn't go so well, when he spelt Teenbridge wrong in his election leaflet and said his party believes in "more talk, less action". Oops! He's now the international ambassador for the Conservative Environment Network (a fantastic organisation (the fact I applied for a job from them may or may not have something to do with this)) and talks about the upcoming Glasgow summit, before musing on what it would be like to be "whipped" by one of his children!

Honestly, despite my political leanings, I'm not Stanley Johnson's biggest fan, but that anecdote was certainly worth listening to, more so than some of the other guests we've had in this series.

Round 7: H R S E A M R U E

Daaniyal: harmers (not written down)
Kirsty: MASHER (6)
DC: MARSH (5) MEASURER (8)
Score: 41–39 (max 59, jos 58)
Darren-o-meter: 1/5 (20%)

MEASURER is the first darren of the day, with HARMER^ not valid on its own.

Round 8: P E W T I A G M O

Daaniyal: MAGPIE (6)
Kirsty: GAME (4)
DC: impetigo (phantom I) OPIATE (6)
OT: MATIPO (6) OPTIMA (6) OPTIME (6) POTAGE (6) TOWAGE (6)
Score: 47–39 (max 65, jos 64)
Darren-o-meter: 1/6 (17%)

Daaniyal extends his lead, and he needed to, with Kirsty only stuck on four.

Round 9: 75, 50, 9, 10, 8, 6. Target: 675.

Daaniyal: 675. 9 × 75 (10)
Kirsty: 675. 75 × 9 (10)
Score: 57–49 (max 75, jos 74)

Teatime teaser: LOBESLICE -> BELLICOSE

Round 10: P I R A J U T N A

Daaniyal: PURITAN (7)
Kirsty: UNPAIR (6)
DC: TURNIP (6)
OT: TANPURA (7)
Score: 64–49 (max 82, jos 81)
Darren-o-meter: 1/7 (14%)

That six from Dictionary Corner is a bit of a TURNIP for the books, isn't it? As it is, Daaniyal extends his lead to 15.

Round 11: H L D E I S W E A

Daaniyal: SHIELD (6)
Kirsty: SHIELD (6)
DC: WHALED (6) DELISH (6) WISHED (6) WILD (4) WILDS (5) swiled(?)
OT: AEDILES (7) HALIDES (7) LEASHED (7) SHAWLED (7) SHAWLIE (7) WELSHED (7) WHEALED (7)
Score: 70–55 (max 89, jos 87)
Darren-o-meter: 1/8 (13%)

Once again I'm defeated by the lack of subtitles on Stanley's words, but everyone misses all the sevens.

OOW Susie gives the origin of some military terms, including patrol and campaign.

Round 12: T E C A R E F N I

Daaniyal: FAINTER (7)
Kirsty: FANCIER (7)
DC: INTERFACE (18)
Score: 77–62 (max 107, jos 105)
Darren-o-meter: 2/9 (22%)

Daaniyal makes a comment about FAINTER not having a plural, but without any S in the selection I have no idea what he meant.

Round 13: O B S I O D R G E

Daaniyal: BOOGIES (7)
Kirsty: BROODS (6)
DC: DISROBE (7) BODGERS (7) BRIDGES (7)
OT: DOOBRIES (8)
Score: 84–62 (max 115, jos 112)
Darren-o-meter: 3/10 (30%)

Daaniyal extends his lead again and takes the lead out to an unassailable 22, which is perhaps a little flattering as the game was a little tight earlier on.

Round 14: 75, 3, 9, 1, 6, 8. Target: 505.

Daaniyal: 504. (not written down) (8 − 1) × 75 − 9 × 3 + 6 (7)
Kirsty: -
RR: 505. (75 + 9) × 6 + 1 (10)
Score: 91–62 (max 125, jos 122)

Daaniyal sees a method for one away, but Rachel shows us it was perhaps easier than it looked.

Round 15: E N A B L E W H O

No one buzzes. Susie gives the answer, which was WHALEBONE.
Final Score: 91–62 (max 135, jos 132)

No conundrum spot from either contestant here today but Daaniyal goes home with a 29 point advantage and will be back tomorrow. Join us then. Goodbye.
