Tuesday 30 November 1982 (Series 1, Prelim 17)

Post by Rhys Benjamin »

Again, huge thanks to Andy Bruno for this one.

Countdown recap for Tuesday 30 November 1982.

C1: Champion Andrew Bruno (2 wins, 97 points.) - Andrew won the toss and elected to be C1.
C2: Challenger Christine Jones, from Otley, who lists her favourite food as Roast Beef & Yorkshires. Obviously. She was also a contestant in the Calendar Countdown pilots, and was actually beating future Series 1 winner Joyce Cansfield at the end of the first pilot.
DC: Mary and Kenneth Williams - more info about Mary in this episode: she was a graduate from Leeds University.
CV: Carol Vorderman, wearing a very low-cut blouse.
OT: Other words or solutions - again, no COD7 on me, so if someone could check these I would be more than happy to amend.

R01: B W E A T S K L O
R02: S G O U Y S L E V
R03: U E N R G B O I T
R04: 100, 5, 4, 6, 2, 5. Target: 210.
R05: W S E U G T Q A I
R06: S G N I E N C I V
R07: R X A E G H A I R
R08: 25, 2, 7, 6, 6, 3. Target: 167.
R09: D E O E R W I N D (conundrum)

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: B W E A T S K L O

Andrew: BASKET (6)
Christine: ELBOWS (6)
DC: BLOKES (6) STEAK (5) BLOAT (5)
OT: BESTOWAL (8)
Score: 6–6 (max 8)

Richard was the one who offered STEAK, commenting "I thought that was quite well done" (ba-doom tish), so it's definitely not STAKE he offered.

Round 2: S G O U Y S L E V

Andrew: GLOSSY (6)
Christine: VOGUES (6)
OT: EULOGY (6) GLOVES (6) LOUSES (6) LOVEYS (6) OUSELS (6) OVULES (6) SOLVES (6)
Score: 12–12 (max 14)

Kenneth decides VOGUES is in the dictionary, but this being prior to 1990 and Madonna, not in the sense of vogueing. You would say "the modes and the vogues of the time", apparently.

Round 3: U E N R G B O I T

Andrew: 5 (0)
Christine: BONIER (6)
OT: ROUTEING (8)
Score: 12–18 (max 22)

Andrew not asked for his 5, as per the modus operandii at the time.

Round 4: 100, 5, 4, 6, 2, 5. Target: 210.

Andrew: 210. 2 × 100 + 5 + 5 (10)
Christine: 210. 2 × 100 + 6 + 4 (10)
Score: 22–28 (max 32)

Easy enough.

Round 5: W S E U G T Q A I

Andrew: SWEAT (5)
Christine: QUIETS (6)
DC: QUEST (5) QUIET (5) QUITE (5)
OT: AGEIST (6) AUGITE (6)
Score: 22–34 (max 38)

Kenneth clearly obsessed with the Q and U here. Andrew was not asked for his 5 initially, but Kenneth asks out of curiosity.

Round 6: S G N I E N C I V

Andrew: 5 (0)
Christine: SEIVING (7) !!!!!
OT: EVINCING (8)
Score: 22–41 (max 46)

Now, hang on a minute...!

Christine is asked by Richard how to spell her word, and she says S-E-I-V-I-N-G. Presumably Kenneth misheard her, because apparently that's fine. So she takes 7 undeserved points here, because, of course, I before E except after C.

Round 7: R X A E G H A I R

Andrew: AIRER (5)
Christine: HIRER (5)
OT: HEGIRA (6)
Score: 27–46 (max 52)

Kenneth is completely flummoxed by AIRER, as is Richard, and it's only Mary who intervenes to point out it's a fairly common word. Andrew thinks that it's a type of clothes horse, and of course, he's absolutely right, to the astonishment of Richard and Kenneth. Richard even asks Andrew if it was a gamble.

Round 8: 25, 2, 7, 6, 6, 3. Target: 167.

Andrew: 167. 6 × 25 + 2 × 7 + 3 (10)
Christine: 167. 6 × 25 + 2 × 7 + 3 (10)
CV: 167. 7 × 25 - 6 - 2 (10)
Score: 37–56 (max 62)

Easy peasy lemon squeezy. Carol gets to show off her method too.

Now then, the conundrum, but it's not crucial.

Oh hang on... Kenneth has something to say!

Kenneth has finally realised that SEIVING was spelt incorrectly, and so Christine has to have her 7 removed. In the chaos, Richard completely forgets to ask what Andrew's word was, meaning he's now scored 5 for round 6 (and it's a 12-point swing!) despite having never actually declared a word.

Score: 42–49 (max 62)

Round 9: D E O E R W I N D

No one buzzes. The answer was EIDERDOWN.
Score: 42–49 (max 72)

Richard pauses before the reveal to bother to ask whether anyone's actually got it "in hindsight" and it's still, after about 40-45 seconds, defeated both contestants. EIDERDOWN is met with a collective "oof" from the audience.

So Christine wins.

Edit: OT corrected against Jack Worsley's COD8, but still no COD7.
