Aptochallenge 2: Letters Attack

Post by Charlie Reams »

Jono's Letters Attack records (154 speed, 159 normal) have stood since the middle of September. Clearly these are strong records, but they're not that strong; maxes of nearly 200 have been recorded, and the Letters Attack hasn't even been played that much. So, it is time for a double Aptochallenge! The challenge is as follows:

Whosoever tops the Speed Letters Attack leaderboard on 23:59 on Sunday 4 January will receive a custom item, their name in lights and a pat on the bum.

Likewise for the normal Letters Attack.

The exact item is currently undecided and is open to negotiation.

To paraphrase Limp Bizkit: break records!

I got close to equalling Jono's score. I blame Round 14 for it

Charlie!

I have been trying to get in the top 10 for the letters attack for a couple of weeks as I had noticed that no-one really does this discipline. Now the secret is out so I have no chance!

Boo.

Going by the records score list, there is a Letters Attack under "Standard" and "Speed", but is it not possible to also include a Goatdown Letters Attack a Hypercountdown Letters Attack and a Hypergoatdown Letters Attack in that table and work out the current leaders to them as well?

EDIT: Whoops. I must've clicked on quote instead of edit. My bad

If I played constantly from now until the 5th of january I probably wouldn't be able to beat it.

If we are unable to beat the targets, will the winner be Jono or the highest score that was achieved, after the challenge was started?

The phrase "whoever tops the leaderboard" suggests Jono is on for a double-item reward, and the instant fame it brings. Responding with "you fucker" might throw a spanner in that plan though...

I could've failed to beat the record 8 times by now if I hadn't checked here in the first place.

Nah, I don't think that would do anything

There should be a consolation prize for the 2nd highest score (acheived during the duel dates) then, if we are unable to beat Jono :D

I don't like round 15 - PELAGES. PELAGE is a mass noun and looking at the definition "the fur, hair, or wool of a mammal" it would be hard to justify its plural. Obviously I'll learn it for apterous records/tourney but if I was on the show I'd have it in my "be wary" section of the brain.

Yes, it's like declaring ORDINATES just 'cos your opponent declared NOTARISED ;)

Actually, ORDINATES was what I found in someone's game and I couldn't remember the others. (And ORDINATES is mathological etc.)

A near miss again. It's going to be hard to beat Junaid's score without luck. I nailed 17/20 maximums and got both the nines and still wasn't enough. Had I got a 100% game I would have had 162 when Junaid has 163. The score is likely to be broken then with 3 nines. That's today's Bevins' Bet.

The challenge is now closed!

The winner of the 30 seconds Letter Attack prize is Junaid, with this, including the three excellent nines CONFLATED, TENSORIAL and SUNBATHER, which improved Jono's record from 159 to 163. Your prize is on its way, as soon as I think of what it is.

The winner of the 10 seconds Letter Attack prize is Kirk, who first tied Jono's 154 and then exceeded it with a superb 158, including such gems as WOODSIA, ENERVATED, PRINTOUT and GENOCIDAL.

I have to say that, while those two games individually were very good, the records didn't improve as much as I thought they would. Maybe the old records were better than I thought. But also, there were relatively few entries compared to the previous challenge; there are still fewer than 100 Speed Letters Attacks played ever. For the next challenge I will try to pick something more exciting, like Goatblitz.

Aye, well played Junaid and Kirk.

If anyone's looking for an interim challenge, I think my Speed 9 record is pretty weak. I got lucky with the game itself - in terms of what was available - but missed a 9 and ended up 12 points away from the max. I was slightly amazed at the time to find out it was the record, and more than slightly amazed that nobody's beaten it yet.

20 consecutive letters rounds and nothing else. If you click Custom Game (next to the Rated Game With... button), you can see some of the most common setups. But if you're practising to go on the show then I'd stick with the standard 15 to start with.
