I thought I had a couple of good 'uns here, but I can only remember this one (due to the poor quality of my memory):
When the fixtures for the football League Cup were announced, they were done so as "the EFL Cup". Usually it's like the (sponsor name) Cup and I couldn't for the life of me think who EFL were, or what they did. They sounded mysterious and almost certainly with their fingers in all sorts of international pies...
English Football League, you fucking moron.
I'll think of some more soon but in the meantime, anybody else like to embarrass themselves with such recently-overturned ignorance?

Oops left off CBB.
On another matter I thought all deaf people were insomniacs because their programmes are always on in the wee small hours.
Also thought that canned laughter was from a live studio audience.

Took me an embarrassingly long time to realise that the Internet and the World Wide Web were different things. Think I learned this when I was 14-15.
I'm not dead yet. In a rut right now because of stress from work. I'll be back later in S89. I also plan to bring back the Mastergram - if I can find a way to run a timer or clock through pure MediaWiki without having to upload to Vimeo every time.

When an unsubscribe link on an email doesn't work (redirects to a non-existent page, or as I had recently, a page that refreshes every half a second so doesn't allow you to submit your email address), it's probably been done on purpose rather than being a site bug.
Similarly this may be why the "hide advert / why am I seeing this?" buttons on facebook don't do anything for the proliferation of adverts I've had recently.

b) The title of this thread is REALLY obvious things that you've just realised. Either, as I suspect, this is not a thing that in your opinion, you've just realised, because it would be a fairly surreal thing to sit up one morning and go "Actually, the BBC is shit", and therefore you're just using a light-hearted thread to have your customary unfunny pop at whatever your bugbear de jour is like some dull wind-up troll toy that's clearly been run over by the vacuum cleaner a few too many times, OR you've genuinely been sitting at the TV watching Eastenders and Songs of Praise for the last 30 years, because you think you're in some way SUPPOSED to enjoy everything that they have to offer, and finally had enough, in which case you really would be a colossal fuckknuckle and a candidate for the world's most mundane Darwin awards.
Go and put a bet on, dear. You'll feel much better.

Anyway, back on topic. Until a few years ago, I used to think that this song (sorry for the poor quality of the video btw) was just a standard (and very catchy) disco song, very much of its time, but nothing more:
Turns out she was actually a porn star and if you listen to the lyrics, it's so obviously about making a porn film that I can't believe I didn't realise it sooner.
And as a special bonus feature, at 2 minutes 20 seconds it has the sample that OMC's "Steal Your Sunshine" was based on! I only just realised that so there you have two for the price of one! Don't say I don't spoil you.

Meh, easy mistake to make. Both three-letter band names, each had one reasonably big hit and one other not very big hit in the lateish 1990s then disappeared (as far as the UK charts are concerned, anyway). I think I can live with being slightly wrong.JimBentley wrote:...at 2 minutes 20 seconds it has the sample that OMC's "Steal Your Sunshine" was based on!

Well, I don't think it's an accurate historical record of events. I think it's normally classified as a tragedy. Everyone must have heard at least one version of this, for example, as it's been around forever (i.e. it's from before I was born and yes I am aware of the cultural bias involved there) and has been used so many times for so many different things.
Some of you might know The Shins, they're an American band whose first album "Oh, Inverted World" was relatively popular. It was released in 2001 and whilst I didn't get hold of it then, I've had it for over a decade. And I've only just realised that one of the singles from the album - "New Slang" - uses the same melody for its intro and outro as the main melody used in "Love Is Blue".

Nah, it was just a very unfunny Euro-geeky "joke". You're right that Lulu won (in a four way tie) with "Boom Bang A Bang", but that was in 1967. Sandie Shaw's "Puppet On A String" won in 1967, which was the year Martin and I were on about.Marc Meakin wrote:Hopefully not a really obvious one that I still haven't realised

Re: REALLY obvious things you've just realised
If you peel Post-Its from the side and not the front, they don't curl up all weird.

I read that on some Buzz Feed thing fairly recently. So I tried it and it made no difference at all.Mark Deeks wrote:If you peel Post-Its from the side and not the front, they don't curl up all weird.

Re: REALLY obvious things you've just realised
Do you mean that they still "curled up all weird"? Because if so, your Post-It notes must be of inferior quality, as I've never encountered this phenomenon, however I've peeled them off. And I used to sell the things, so I've used not only the branded ones, but also a wide range of imitations, so I know what I'm on about. Honest, I do! I know it sounds arrogant but I have extensive experience in this area.Ryan Taylor wrote:I read that on some Buzz Feed thing fairly recently.
