After nearly a year, I've finally updated the PB list. As well as a new entry from Matt Gould, there were improvements from Matthew Tassier, Junaid Mubeen, Jonathan Wynn, Dan Byrom, Stephen Read, Kai Laddiman and Adam Latchford. Adam Latchford improved from 29:29 to 20:35 - nearly 9 minutes! He was 54th. He is now 19th.

Sadly won't ever happen. Parkrun have removed all the course records from the website.

It seems there's a vocal group on twitter who are objecting that female course records could be held by trans women. Really WGAS - it's parkrun, not the friggin' olympics. (FB comments suggest there actually may be one record at one parkrun that falls into this category - hardly an endemic problem!) Sad times.

It's very sad indeed, and I feel very sorry for any trans people who are caught up in this. Parkrun isn't a race or a competition, and I've always loved that it's inclusive. Having said that, if I was elite, I'd probably be pissed off if my record did get taken by a trans woman. But I imagine those cases are extremely rare and this feels like a sledgehammer approach. I hadn't realised till yesterday that this was an issue at all. I remember this story a few years back https://blog.parkrun.com/uk/2020/02/12/ ... s-welcome/ - one of the things she felt relief over is how easy it was to change your gender on your profile. It's so sad that people who are already facing huge challenges around acceptance now have this furore round something I've always seen as inclusive and welcoming, whoever you are. Not sure there is an easy answer (especially if some cis men, as twatter claims, are changing their gender on their parkrun profiles just to get the records - really is this true? - and what's to stop me registering as 85 for the same reason?) A lot of people get a lot of pleasure from the records, and it's always exciting when a course record gets broken. Such a shame.

Well, here's the relevant bit from their webpage:

After careful consideration and extensive consultation–both in 2019 and in 2023, we decided to continue categorising people based on gender rather than sex. We feel this is aligned with us as a health and wellbeing charity that provides non-competitive socially-focussed physical activity, and allows people to identify in the way they feel most appropriate and comfortable.

In order to ensure that those who do not identify with the gender binary are not excluded from parkrun, in 2019, we decided to expand the range of options that a person could choose from.

In all countries we operate in, parkrunners can record their gender as male or female, or alternatively they are free to keep that information private by selecting “prefer not to say”.

Further, in the majority of parkrun countries we also offer a fourth option of “another gender identity”. Note: We have a duty of care to our communities and volunteers, and as such in a small number of countries this option is not available for legal, cultural and/or safeguarding reasons.

I would, however, do it differently. parkrun is supposed to be inclusive and as much as possible apolitical. They should also not be asking for more information than they need. The reason for asking for someone's sex is purely for results separation and age-graded scores*. If they weren't doing that, they should probably not ask at all. That's why they shouldn't be asking for someone's self-identified gender. They simply do not need to know.

What they could do is have the sex question at the end with a qualifier. So something like "If you want to receive age-graded scores along with your times, you will need to select your sex as male or female. Otherwise you can leave blank or select "other" or "prefer not to say"."

*They call them age-graded scores, but really it's age and sex.

But that does mean it's partly on the beach, and the whole course is very exposed.

There's no checks and the results often have errors. My PB for a long time was recorded 13 seconds faster than it was - I think the results were one place out. I contacted the event organisers but they didn't correct it. There's people pulled by dogs, people missing laps (used to happen a lot at Sandurst till they changed the order of the course) and all sorts of other errors. The trans row misses the point that it really isn't a race, but the stats are of interest to a lot of people and some of the stuff that's been removed (attendance records for example) makes no sense. I really don't see how the stats are off-putting to newcomers - I think the name parkrun is probably more of a barrier to the "I can't run 5K people". But for the vast majority of us, it makes no difference to our Saturday run - I was at Bushy on Saturday (the largest parkrun event) and only overheard one conversation about it.

At my parkrun the JW10 record (so girls 10 and under) was at one point held by a 40-ish-year-old man who used the wrong barcode. I suspect deliberately because he did the same at another local parkrun. There's also something a bit off about this guy in general.

I did contact the event director (and pointed him to the photo evidence) but he didn't do anything about it. He didn't explicitly refuse but didn't act on it either.

They would have to at least be at the event in some capacity to get points, even if they're not playing. Otherwise anyone doing a parkrun that weekend would have to count. There's no official parkrun for a CO-event. You can do any parkrun and attend.

Excellent stuff Having failed dismally to get to the Cutty Sark to see my daughter, we realised the Gev-pace athletes were passing us, checked the app and realised he must be close, so gave him a shout around 18 miles in Managed to see my daughter at 15 miles, then again just before the end so all good. She finished smiling, so a successful day's marathoning, though I swear spectating as just as knackering as running the thing!
