Mine is a second off my fastest, but about 1% higher. Also, I note it was set on Christmas Day in Dublin, being on holiday clearly agreed with me that day.

Obviously anyone is allowed to make their own list on here! But wen I do the results for Blackpool, I'll probably update the PB list and could do an age-grade list as well. But as discussed in this video, the percentages are biased towards females and old people. It's much easier for e.g. an 80-year-old woman to achieve a particular percentage than for a 25-year-old man.

Works for me :)

Tbf the time based rankings are biased toward young men, so some you win, some you lose :)

True, though at least the times are just the raw data. Anyway, I'll do the percentage PB list shortly.

Blackpool parkrun then before CO:Blackpool (or whatever it was called) - it had 174 runners with the following results:

21. Thomas Carey - 22:34 (57.16%) (857 points)
33. Callum Todd - 24:28 (52.72%) (714 points)
60. Bradley Horrocks - 26:19 (49.02%) (571 points)
81. Dave Ryan - 28:22 (54.64%) (429 points)
82. Colin Peet - 28:27 (57.35%) (286 points)
130. Suzy Turner - 32:30 (52.87%) (143 points)

The table:

1. Callum Todd - 5098
2. Thomas Carey - 4371

20. Dinos Sfyris - 400
21. Chris Marshall - 391
22. Tasneem Rana - 367

This gives a total of 31,500 from 63 scoring events, averaging 500.

This is the latest PB list. We've had improvements from Jonathan Wynn and Chris Marshall, and I've also added both of the Cappleman-Lyneses! The percentage list can wait until another day though. It's far too late to be starting that now.

Have to disagree. The world records that the percentages are based on are biased towards females and old people, for the reasons you give. But the actual percentages are very much biased in the opposite direction. A significant proportion of the population of 25-year-old men could achieve an age-related 50%. Much higher than the proportion of 80-year-old women that could do the same. An 80-year-old woman who can actually run 5K is a pretty rare bird.

You have a point, but it's not quite that simple. Almost all 25-year-old men could achieve 50%, but fewer 80-year-old women could because more of them would not be in a position to get round a 5k course. (Though they would not need to run. 50% would be a time of 53:18.) So you'd be right about 50%. But at the more competitive end, the opposite would be the case. It's quite hard for a 25-year-old man to get 80%, for example (a time of 16:08), and I think more 80-year-old women would achieve it if they had the motivation.

In any case, I shouldn't have gone as high as 80 years old. Most people in their 50s and 60s are capable of taking up running, and for those that are, a certain percentage would be easier to achieve than for a 25-year-old man.

Edit - Just to clarify then, you're more likely to have a disability that prevents you from running the older you get, but for those that avoid this, percentages get easier to achieve.

A couple of notes on the above then - the first two remain the same; Tim Springett springs from 8th to 3rd; David Williams goes from 31st to 6th; Harry Whitehouse goes from 42nd to 11th; Fiona T goes from 47th to 25th; Ian Volante remains at 27th.

Thanks Gevin - quite interesting given the previous discussion that the list is still dominated by young men, and in fact we have to go to me in 25 to get to a middle aged woman!

As far as I know the Edinburgh parkrunners last weekend were:

Oriam - Thomas Carey, Callum Todd, Fiona Titcombe
Hollyrood - Colin Peet

Anyone else who did one speak now or miss out on your precious Gavin points!

And now Holyrood parkrun with 279 runners:

197. Colin Peet - 30:01 (54.36%) (500 points)

Re: CO:parkrun Recaps

Post by Gavin Chipper »

I know it hasn't been that long since the last one, but I've decided to update the PB list again. There were only two improvments that I could see - Jonathan Wynn by 9 seconds to 23:09, but also Thomas Carey improving by a whopping 1 minute and 58 seconds to go from 22:09 to 20:11. That sub-20 beckons! But also I've added a couple of names to the list - Eeshan Malhotra who was at the Braintree event last year (and maybe other events), who slots in with a time of 28:51, and also the legendary Junaid Mubeen who is one of the original c4c runners, featuring in the old Co-lympics thread, and who also has his own running blog! It doesn't seem to have been updated since 2010 but he's still very much a current runner as his parkrun PB (22:30) is from today!

Also, if anyone knows of any other Countdown parkrunners who should be on this list, then let me know. I've noticed there's quite a few in the Strava group not on this list. It might be that they're not parkrunners anyway, but if I'm not particularly familiar with them it can be difficult for me to know if a result with their name is actually them or someone with the same name. I'm fairly confident all the ones currently on the list are not a case of mistaken identity, but anyone can check my work at any time.

Before CoBra, we had the Great Notley parkrun. Only one of us participated, although of the people on the points list, seven were present at CoBra! There were 177 runners altogether and these were the results:

2. Gevin Chapwell - 18:49 (74.76%) (500 points)

And that's it. So the points table:

1. Callum Todd - 5598
2. Thomas Carey - 5121
3. Bradley Horrocks - 3768
4. Gevin Chapwell - 2933
5. Fiona Titcombe - 2685
6. David Hilton - 1571
7. Mike Springett - 1560
8. Stephen Read - 1200
9. Colin Peet - 1119
10. Dave Ryan - 1065
11. Oliver Garner - 900
12. Fiona Thorne - 876
13. Tim Down - 818
14. Matthew Tassier - 800
15. Adam Latchford - 600
=. Jonathan Wynn - 600
17. Zubair Patel - 545
18. Phil Hannan - 500
19. Suzy Turner - 416
20. Dinos Sfyris - 400
21. Chris Marshall - 391
22. Tasneem Rana - 367
23. Adam Dexter - 167

This gives 34,000 from 68 scoring events, averaging 500.

Only one round to go in the 2020-2022 tournament so it's between Callum Todd and Thomas Carey. Or perhaps we could go full FOCAL and say that the winner is the one who sets the fastest time at Milton Keynes out of the top 8 (of those who actually run in Milton Keynes)! I think that would be going a bit far though. It would pretty much always be the last parkrun that decides the winner.

How about when Tom is 3 minutes ahead of me with 100m to go, everyone has to stop and bunch up. Everyone between me and Tom gets cleared out of the way, and nobody is allowed to overtake me. Oh and Tom isn't allowed to wear shoes. Sounds like a fair way to decide a championship to me.

1. Tim Down - 2:57:19
2. Jonathan Rawlinson - 2:58:36
3. Gevin Chapwell - 3:09:16
4. Matt Bayfield - 3:09:22
5. Giles Hutchings - 4:19:15
Since this post from ages ago, Jonathan Rawlinson has done a time of 2:48:10, which I found on his Power of 10 profile page. I also did a marathon the other day in 2:59:40, so I've joined the sub-3 hour club. I'm sure lots (well some) of the other people on the parkrun PB list have done marathons too, so it might be worth me looking into it.

Right then - Milton Keynes saw the final round of the 2020-2022 CO-parkrun championship. Going into this event, Callum Todd led Thomas Carey by 5598 points to 5121 - a difference of 477 points. We had 6 runners at Linford Wood parkrunm making one place worth 142 or 143 points depending on the position. Either way, Thomas would need to beat Callum by 4 places to win the championship. Out of 210 runners in total, here were our results:

2. Gevin Chapwell - 19:09 (73.46%) (857 points)
18. Thomas Carey - 23:11 (55.64%) (714 points)
32. Bradley Horrocks - 25:04 (51.46%) (571 points)
35. Callum Todd - 25:25 (50.75%) (429 points)
54. Fiona Titcombe - 27:50 (63.35%) (286 points)
162. Chris Marshall - 37:43 (36.19%) (143 points)

This was an outright PB for Fiona, so well done Fiona! And I think you can see from the results that Callum is crowned champion! But here is the table for confirmation:

1. Callum Todd - 6027
2. Thomas Carey - 5835
3. Bradley Horrocks - 4339
4. Gevin Chapwell - 3790
5. Fiona Titcombe - 2971
6. David Hilton - 1571
7. Mike Springett - 1560
8. Stephen Read - 1200
9. Colin Peet - 1119
10. Dave Ryan - 1065
11. Oliver Garner - 900
12. Fiona Thorne - 876
13. Tim Down - 818
14. Matthew Tassier - 800
15. Adam Latchford - 600
=. Jonathan Wynn - 600
17. Zubair Patel - 545
18. Chris Marshall - 534
19. Phil Hannan - 500
20. Suzy Turner - 416
21. Dinos Sfyris - 400
22. Tasneem Rana - 367
23. Adam Dexter - 167

This gives us 37,000 points from 74 scoring events, averaging 500, which means that everything all adds up nicely for the championship.

So well done to Callum for claiming the CO:parkrun championship. He wasn't a million miles away from winning the FOCAL championship either, finishing in third place.

Incidentally, here are the 2017, 2018 and 2019 standings for comparison. (You used to get about a tenth of the score you do now as it was a 0 to 100 rather than 0 to 1000 scale.) 23 is also a record number of competitors, with previous seasons having 10, 6 and 11 respectively.

I did a parkrun this morning- not sure if it counts for anything?

It was very up hill and down dale, hence my 43:58 time! Fastest was just under 20m so presumably a good indicator of the difficulty?

If it was a PB it would get updated on the list at some point but it looks like it was a bit slower than your previous time. You'll get championship points for CO-event weekend parkruns. But good work for doing one!

Fastest time can be quite variable anyway depending on who turns up.

There's this website which tells you how fast on average courses are. Having stalked your profile, the one you did today was 544th fastest of the 706 UK parkruns which is bottom quarter so that checks out. (Sadly it doesn't do international ones - the one I did this morning was very flat and gravelly)

The start of 2023 brings us a new championship with all scores reset to zero. And the first round took place on the morning of COLIN at Doddington Hall parkrun where we had, as Adam says, a record 13 competitors! There were 44 people taking part at COLIN itself, so this is about 29.5% of the total entry. There were 301 runners (and walkers) altogether so let's get on with the results:

10 (1). Gevin Chapwell - 18:59 (74.71%) (929 points)
29 (2). Thomas Carey - 21:15 (60.71%) (857 points)
47 (3). Bradley Horrocks - 22:29 (57.38%) (786 points)
52 (4). Mike Springett - 22:45 (56.78%) (714 points)
60 (5). Dan Byrom - 23:17 (55.40%) (643 points)
69 (6). David Hilton - 23:48 (55.74%) (571 points)
73 (7). Callum Todd - 23:58 (53.82%) (500 points)
123 (8). Dinos Sfyris - 26:48 (48.94%) (429 points)*
138 (9). Fiona Titcombe - 27:34 (63.97%) (357 points)
175 (10). Adam Latchford - 29:29 (43.75%) (286 points)
198 (11). Eeshan Malhotra - 31:26 (41.73%) (214 points)
251 (12). Adam Dexter - 37:58 (34.55%) (143 points)
256 (13). Chris Marshall - 39:06 (34.91%) (71 points)

This gives a total of 6500 points from 13 scoring events, averaging 500, which is good.

*Dinos was the unknown runner in position 123 but didn't scan his barcode. parkrun don't publish the times of the unknowns, but it's available here. And I worked out his age-grade percentage myself.

I'll be updating the PB list shortly, with new PBs and new runners!

If this was done by age grade, Fiona would move up from 9th to 2nd, David and Dan would swap places, as would Chris and Adam. Also Fiona would stop whinging that we should order it by age grade ;)

Before COMAN, just Dan Byrom (of the Co-eventers anyway) took part in the Alexandra, Moss Side parkrun:

213 (1). Dan Byrom - 30:12 (42.72%) (500 points)

And now the table:

1. Dan Byrom - 1143
2. Gevin Chapwell - 929
3. Thomas Carey - 857
4. Bradley Horrocks - 786
5. Mike Springett - 714
6. David Hilton - 571
7. Callum Todd - 500
8. Dinos Sfyris - 429
9. Fiona Titcombe - 357
10. Adam Latchford - 286
11. Eeshan Malhotra - 214
12. Adam Dexter - 143
13. Chris Marshall - 71

This gives 7000 points from 14 scoring events, correctly averaging 500. (This is the check I always run on the points table in case you didn't realise. Errors can still creep in, but at least the total points will always be right.)

So anyway Dan shoots into the lead!

Before the CO-Rugby event, we had four Countdowners take part at the Rugby parkrun:

21 (1). Thomas Carey - 22:48 (56.58%) (800 points)
33 (2). Matt Gould - 23:40 (58.10%) (600 points)
59 (3). Stephen Read - 26:39 (49.78%) (400 points)
99 (4). Fiona Titcombe - 29:12 (61.19%) (200 points)

And the table:

1. Thomas Carey - 1657
2. Dan Byrom - 1143
3. Gevin Chapwell - 929
4. Bradley Horrocks - 786
5. Mike Springett - 714
6. Matt Gould - 600
7. David Hilton - 571
8. Fiona Titcombe - 557
9. Callum Todd - 500
10. Dinos Sfyris - 429
11. Stephen Read - 400
12. Adam Latchford - 286
13. Eeshan Malhotra - 214
14. Adam Dexter - 143
15. Chris Marshall - 71

That gives 9000 points from 18 scoring events, averaging the required 500.

So Tom jumps to the top to lead the championship, and we now have Matt Gould who will need to be added to the PB list when it's updated!

We had the Leeds Goat event on 15th April, but unfortunately parkruns at Goat events don't count. Unlucky. Only joking! We had four Goatdowners at Woodhouse Moor:

61 (1). Thomas Carey - 21:48 (59.17%) (800 points)
92 (2). Dan Byrom - 22:52 (56.41%) (600 points)
330 (3). Fiona Titcombe - 29:22 (60.84%) (400 points)
508 (4). Chris Marshall - 39:20 (34.70%) (200 points)

And the table:

1. Thomas Carey - 2457
2. Dan Byrom - 1743
3. Fiona Titcombe - 957
4. Gevin Chapwell - 929
5. Bradley Horrocks - 786
6. Mike Springett - 714
7. Matt Gould - 600
8. David Hilton - 571
9. Callum Todd - 500
10. Dinos Sfyris - 429
11. Stephen Read - 400
12. Adam Latchford - 286
13. Chris Marshall - 271
14. Eeshan Malhotra - 214
15. Adam Dexter - 143

That gives 11,000 from 22 scoring events, averaging 500.

Tom consolidates his lead at the top and Fiona jumps from 8th to 3rd!

As you know, with points from 0 to 1000, all scores are rounded to the nearest integer. So 333 1/3 just becomes 333. This also means that you always get the same number being rounded up as down so the average score for an event is always 500. However, if there were 15 runners at an event, scores would all be multiples of 62.5. Since .5 is traditionally rounded up, this would mess up the average-of-500 thing. So the rule in this case is that everyone in the top half gets their scores rounded up, and everyone in the bottom half gets their score rounded down. Complaints to the usual address.

OK so Brighton then on 13th May at the Preston Park parkrun. Four participants it seems. Results:

40 (1). Thomas Carey - 21:08 (61.04%) (800 points)
104 (2). Jonathan Wynn - 23:18 (56.94%) (600 points)
116 (3). David Hilton - 23:33 (56.69%) (400 points)
368 (4). Fiona Titcombe - 31:33 (56.63%) (200 points)

And the table:

1. Thomas Carey - 3257
2. Dan Byrom - 1743
3. Fiona Titcombe - 1157
4. Gevin Chapwell - 929
5. Bradley Horrocks - 786
6. Mike Springett - 714
7. Matt Gould - 600
=. Jonathan Wynn - 600
9. David Hilton - 971
10. Callum Todd - 500
11. Dinos Sfyris - 429
12. Stephen Read - 400
13. Adam Latchford - 286
14. Chris Marshall - 271
15. Eeshan Malhotra - 214
16. Adam Dexter - 143

This gives a total of 13,000 from 26 scoring events, averaging 500.

According to my sources, only Mike Springett did a parkrun before Dublin on Saturday, at Fairview parkrun:

41 (1). Mike Springett - 24:09 (53.55%) (500 points)

And the table:

1. Thomas Carey - 3257
2. Dan Byrom - 1743
3. Mike Springett - 1214
4. Fiona Titcombe - 1157
5. Gevin Chapwell - 929
6. Bradley Horrocks - 786
7. Matt Gould - 600
=. Jonathan Wynn - 600
9. David Hilton - 971
10. Callum Todd - 500
11. Dinos Sfyris - 429
12. Stephen Read - 400
13. Adam Latchford - 286
14. Chris Marshall - 271
15. Eeshan Malhotra - 214
16. Adam Dexter - 143

This gives 13,500 points from 27 scores, averaging 500.
