Round 1: U E I M J F S A N

Jamie: FAMINES (7)
Laurence: FAMINES (7)
DC: JASMINE (7) UNSAFE (6)
Score: 7–7 (max 7)

Almost reminiscent of my 2nd debut, when both me and Karyn Cooke declared FAMINE in round 1, but this time, it's FAMINES apiece for 7. 8-)

Round 2: V D E A R L W O N

Jamie: WONDER (6)
Laurence: WANDER (6)
DC: OVERLAND (8)
OT: RONDAVEL (8)
Score: 13–13 (max 15)

Time to WONDER and WANDER, but DC go OVERLAND instead. :P

In South Africa, a RONDAVEL is a traditional circular African dwelling with a conical thatched roof.

Round 3: 50, 4, 9, 5, 4, 2. Target: 949.

Jamie: 949. Mistake in working.
Laurence: 949. (((2 x 5) + 9) x 50) - (4 / 4) (10)
Score: 13–23 (max 25)

Well, it looks like another perfect pair, but soon after Laurence finishes his off, Jamie reveals that he's messed it up!! :o

Teatime teaser: HELPADAM -> HEADLAMP

Round 4: L I E R Y N A U E

Jamie: NEARLY (6)
Laurence: NEURAL (6)
DC: EERILY (6) LINEAR (6) URINAL (6)
OT: INLAYER (7) NAILERY (7)
Score: 19–29 (max 32)

Back to matching 6's, but there are a couple of hidden 7's here.

Round 5: I A O S P T N P A

Jamie: POINTS (6)
Laurence: APPOINTS (8)
DC: PATINA (6) PATINAS (7)
Score: 19–37 (max 40)

Laurence APPOINTS, while Jamie just POINTS........

Round 6: 75, 100, 25, 50, 3, 9. Target: 882.

Jamie: -
Laurence: 882. (100 - (50 / 25)) x 9 (10)
Score: 19–47 (max 50)

Well, after George Ford's foray with the 4 large, I thought we were done with that, but clearly Laurence likes to used them too, as shows why to go further clear......

Sian talks about interviewing Hollywood A-listers on BBC Breakfast, including Will Smith & Harrison Ford.

Round 7: I E U D L T H A V

Jamie: DILUTE (6)
Laurence: VAULTED (7)
OT: VIHUELA (7)
Score: 19–54 (max 57)

Laurence clearly paid more attention to yesterday's game than Jamie did, as he spots VAULTED, which Jamie misses again.........

Round 8: M E I N C F O M S

Jamie: MINCES (6)
Laurence: INCOMES (7)
DC: COMMIES (7)
OT: MESONIC (7)
Score: 19–61 (max 64)

More and more INCOMES for Laurence. The game is surely heading his way now...........

MESONIC is an adjective relating to MESON, a subatomic particle which is intermediate in mass between an electron and a proton and transmits the strong interaction that binds nucleons together in the atomic nucleus.

Round 9: 3, 6, 1, 2, 4, 3. Target: 426.

Jamie: 426. ((3 x 4 x 3 x 2) - 1) x 6 (10)
Laurence: 426. ((3 x 4 x 3 x 2) - 1) x 6 (10)
Score: 29–71 (max 74)

Jamie decides to go from one extreme to the other to try and get back into the game, but Laurence matches him on this 6 small.

Teatime teaser: TIPHORSE -> TROPHIES

Round 10: L B A E I Q C K I

Jamie: CABLE (5)
Laurence: CABLE (5)
DC: BLACK (5) BLEAK (5) ALIBI (5) QIBLA (5)
OT: BAILIE (6)
Score: 34–76 (max 80)

Loadsa loadsa 5's here, but just a sole 6.

A BAILIE is a historical term for a municipal officer and magistrate in Scotland.

Round 11: A U O T D S G E R

Jamie: ROASTED (7)
Laurence: OUTRAGED (8)
DC: GUSTO (5)
OT: OUTRAGES (8)
Score: 34–84 (max 88)

Laurence won't be OUTRAGED at getting this 8, I'm sure :!: :!:

Susie's Origins of Words tells of the origins of "madness" related words.

Round 12: T S A E O R T U D

Jamie: TOASTER (7)
Laurence: TOASTED (7)
DC: OUTSTARED (18)
Score: 41–91 (max 106)

Wow, the letters are almost exactly the same, but the one change means we have a 9 available, which DC spots :!: :!: But, Laurence has got the game wrapped up thanks to the 7. :)

Round 13: A I E G T M P O N

Jamie: tameing
Laurence: PIMENTO (7)
DC: TAMING (6) TAMPING (7) TEMPING (7) PTOMAINE (8)
OT: PINOTAGE (8)
Score: 41–98 (max 114)

Jamie's tameing isn't spelt right, but Laurence pulls out a PIMENTO, and is closing on a début century too.

PINOTAGE is a variety of red wine grape grown in South Africa, produced by crossing Pinot Noir and other varieties.

Round 14: 75, 50, 6, 5, 7, 4. Target: 650.

Jamie: 650. (7 + 6) x 50 (10)
Laurence: 650. (7 + 6) x 50 (10)
Score: 51–108 (max 124)

A simple 2 large appears to gift Laurence his century.

Round 15: B I N T G I R L S

Laurence buzzes on 1.75 seconds to say BRISTLING which is correct.
Final Score: 51–118 (max 134)

But, some rapid-fire buzzing from Laurence, and he completes an impressive début with a score of 118, and 10 maxes to boot too :!: :!: 8-) 8-)

Will he be making a late surge for the finals, I wonder..... :? :? Only 3 places are left in the finals, so not much time to book your place............

Join me next Wednesday for another Robbo Recap. So, till then, bye for now. ;) :) :D  8-)
