Wednesday 15th October 2014 (Series 71, Prelim 66)

Post by James Robinson »

So, I'm still in the audience, but I have some new bosom buddies in the audience with me. Zubair Patel and George Pryn joined earlier in the day (you can see George on screen in just over a week's time..... ;) ), but also Dylan Taylor, who was hoping that his octototal record would remain intact. (Well, after the previous day's nervousness for Dan, that was pretty much certain, but strange things happen when you least expect them.............. )

But, since then, Dan has been in superb form, and has hardly put a foot wrong. Let's see if that continues today. Enjoy. ;) :) :D  8-)

Countdown recap for Wednesday 15 October 2014.

C1: Champion Dan McColm (5 wins, 562 points.) An Apteforumite from Kineton, Warwickshire.
C2: Challenger Harry Jarrett. A financial controller from Worthing, West Sussex. He plays for a football team in Sussex League 2. Shortly after passing his driving test, he got cut up on a roundabout and used driver road rage on the man, who happened to be a member of senior management...........  :P
DC: Susie Dent and Richard Arnold.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Dan: UNSTEADY (8)
Harry: UNSTEADY (8)
DC: UNSEATED (8) SEDATE (6)
OT: UNSTAYED (8)
Score: 8–8 (max 8)

Definitely not an UNSTEADY start by both players, as it's 8 apiece after round 1. :)

Round 2: R T W I E O N R E

Dan: REORIENT (8)
Harry: TERRINE (7)
DC: REWRITE (7) WINTERER (8)
Score: 16–8 (max 16)

Dan seems to have REORIENTed the tide of this match early doors, as he now goes into a 8 point lead.

Round 3: 100, 5, 9, 2, 4, 3. Target: 445.

Dan: 445. (100 x 4) + (9 x 5) (10)
Harry: 445. (100 x 4) + (9 x 5) (10)
Score: 26–18 (max 26)

Not too taxing numbers here. :)

Teatime teaser: UGLYNINA -> UNGAINLY

Round 4: A O I R T W E T S

Dan: TOASTIER (8)
Harry: WARTIEST (8)
OT: SWOTTIER (8)
Score: 34–26 (max 34)

TOASTIER and WARTIEST............ewwwwwww :P

Round 5: K N R I A O P F E

Dan: PINAFORE (8)
Harry: PINKER (6)
Score: 42–26 (max 42)

Yet another 8 for Dan, and it's still a perfect day for him so far, and still a perfect game too. :D

Round 6: 5, 6, 8, 2, 9, 7. Target: 527.

Dan: 527. ((6 + 9) x 5 x 7) + 2 (10)
Harry: 532.
Score: 52–26 (max 52)

Harry decides to try and get back in with some 6 small action, but instead Dan's score is now double that of Harry's..........

Richard talks about all his cameos that he has made in some of this country's biggest dramas and sitcoms, such as Downton Abbey, Lark Rise To Candleford and Benidorm.

Round 7: P C T A O A X R E

Dan: CAPROATE (8)
Harry: parrot
DC: CAPTOR (6)
Score: 60–26 (max 60)

Another super darrenic 8, making it five 8's in a row too :!: :!:   :o :o

Round 8: C D N I R O I A G

Dan: RADIOING (8)
Harry: ADORING (7)
DC: ORGANIC (7) CARDING (7)
Score: 68–26 (max 68)

SIX EIGHT'S ON THE TROT!!!! THIS IS JUST MENTAL!!!! :o  :o  :o

Round 9: 25, 7, 10, 9, 1, 8. Target: 310.

Dan: 310. (25 + 7 - 1) x 10 (10)
Harry: 310. (25 + 7 - 1) x 10 (10)
Score: 78–36 (max 78)

And another easy numbers, and perfection is still on, as we head into the 3rd "half".

Teatime teaser: EGGUNITS -> GUESTING

Round 10: D O E P V I L E N

Dan: DEVELOP (7)
Harry: OPENED (6)
DC: PENILE (6)
OT: ENVELOP (7) LIVENED (7)
Score: 85–36 (max 85)

Well, the run of 8's has ended, but Dan's MAX GAME is still ON :!: :!:

Round 11: T R M I A O N A O

Dan: INAMORATO (18)
Harry: martian
Score: 103–36 (max 103)

OH! MY!! WORD!!! (QUITE LITERALLY!!!!) When the 2nd A came out, I was thinking "go for S for ANIMATORS", but luckily once the O came out, Dylan who was sitting next to me, pointed out this amazing word, which I had never even heard of :!: :!:

The game is already over, Dan now has his 6th win, but are we about to see a MAX GAME that we all crave............. :?: :?: :? :?

Susie's Origins of Words talks about the origins of "booze" and "cheesy".

Round 12: S L I A U M Q E R

Dan: MISRULE (7)
Harry: qualmers
DC: MARQUIS (7) MARQUISE (8)
Score: 110–36 (max 111)

Well, thanks to my audience buddy, Dylan, he points me towards the darrenic 8, so once Dan said 7, we knew the game was up, but never mind, I'm sure he's not bothered too much. :D

Round 13: H S C A E U L D O

Dan: SHOALED (7)
Harry: CLASHED (7)
DC: SLOUCHED (8) LOUCHE (6) DOUCHES (7)
Score: 117–43 (max 119)

He might be slightly more annoyed at missing SLOUCHED, but he's still on for a phenomenal score :!: :!:

Round 14: 75, 8, 4, 8, 7, 5. Target: 912.

Dan: 912. ((8 / 8) + 75) x (7 + 5) (10)
Harry: 912. ((7 + 5) x 75) + 8 + 4 (10)
Score: 127–53 (max 129)

Another simple numbers game appears, and now Dan has the chance to equal the highest score of the series, set by Mark Davies exactly 2 months ago :!: :!:

Round 15: T U R B O M E N U

Dan buzzes on 18.25 seconds to say OUTNUMBER which is correct.
Final Score: 137–53 (max 139)

Well, he took his time, but Dan does indeed get the 137 to equal Mark's score and certainly put him in a strong position on the leaderboard.

The 137 is also a record score for highest numbers of points with only one 9, which makes it the highest "Gevin scoring" score in the history of Countdown :!: :!:

The six 8's in the first 6 rounds is also something quite spectacular and might not happen again for a while.

On the leaderboard, Dan is currently in 4th place, but is already in a better points position than Paul Worsley in 5th, who has 52 fewer points than he Dan, and David Stanford in 3rd place, as Dan only needs a win tomorrow to go above him, and another decent winning score tomorrow would mean that he would need a relatively small score on Monday to go top of the board.

I'll be back tomorrow for the final recap of the week, with the horses taking over on Friday. Can Dan carry on with his amazing form tomorrow, I wonder :?: :?:

Till then, bye for now. ;) :) :D  8-)
