Round 1: A O U A T Y R N I

Roy: OUTRAN (6)
Dan: retain
DC: RATION (6)
OT: RAINOUT (7) UNITARY (7)
Score: 6–0 (max 7)

A phantom E makes its way into Dan's letters as Roy takes an early lead. Will this help him retain the champions chair!?! Susie and Chris only spot a six although there are two relatively easy sevens available.

Round 2: L O E T R A V E M

Roy: overlate
Dan: TRAVEL (6)
DC: ELEVATOR, (8) OVEREAT (7)
OT: ELEVATOR (8)
Score: 6–6 (max 15)

Roy risks an eight but it's not there and Dan catches him up with TRAVEL. Chris and Susie lift us to an eight with ELEVATOR.

Round 3: 4, 2, 8, 1, 75, 100. Target: 472.

Roy: 472. (4*100) +75-2-1 (10)
Dan: 472. (4*100) +75-2-1 (10)
Score: 16–16 (max 25)

Straight forward numbers round.

Teatime teaser: RELATIVE -> LEVIRATE

Round 4: A I I S T E H J S

Roy: theists
Dan: STASH (5)
DC: HEISTS (6)
OT: ASITIES (7) SAITHES (7)
Score: 16–21 (max 32)

A difficult selection sees Roy make a mistake allowing Dan to take the lead. Dictionary corner steal the round with HEISTS but miss the two available sevens.

SAITHES - The Saith (also known as Coley) similar to Pollock, is a fish native to Norwegian waters.

Round 5: B R G O E O A N E

Roy: GROAN (5)
Dan: BEGONE (6)
DC: BARGEE, (6) BOOGER (6)
OT: OREGANO (7)
Score: 16–27 (max 39)

Sixes for all in the studio, except Roy, sees Dan extend his lead. Surprised DC didn't spot OREGANO. Even I saw that!

Round 6: 2, 5, 7, 6, 75, 100. Target: 733.

Roy: 733. (100+5)*7 -2 (10)
Dan: 735.
Score: 26–27 (max 49)

Dan gets within two but it's not enough to stop Roy closing the gap to a single point with a fairly easy solve.

Round 7: U A O T G D T M E

Roy: MUTATED (7)
Dan: MUTATED (7)
DC: GUTTED, (6) MATTED, (6) TAUTOG (6)
OT: OUTDATE (7)
Score: 33–34 (max 56)

The first time today that either contestant has maxed the letters round. DC don't spot the other seven but offer a selection of sixes.

TAUTOG - A large dark coloured edible fish of the wrasse family.

Round 8: U S F I A E N S D

Roy: finess
Dan: FIENDS (6)
DC: INFUSED, (7) SUNDAES (7)
OT: FUNDIES (7) INFUSED (7) INFUSES (7) NIDUSES (7) SNAFUED (7)
Score: 33–40 (max 63)

A round full of sevens but Dan only spots a six whilst Roy could have done with the phantom E from round one.

SNAFUED - A badly confused or ridiculously muddled situation.
NIDUSES - A nest, especially one for the eggs of insects, spiders, or small animals.

Round 9: 8, 5, 10, 6, 75, 50. Target: 541.

Roy: 542. (50+5)*10-8 (7)
Dan: 540. (50*10)+(8*5) (7)
RR: 541. 75*8-50-10+6-5 (10)
Score: 40–47 (max 73)

Toughest numbers round so far leaves the contestants one away on either side. Rachel shows us how it should be done.
Teatime teaser: YESEIGHT -> EYESIGHT

Round 10: I O R N E G I R S

Roy: IGNORES (7)
Dan: RINGERS (7)
DC: ORGIES (6)
OT: IGNORERS (8) SEIGNIOR (8)
Score: 47–54 (max 81)

Roy IGNORES the -ING ending to good effect and is matched by Dan's RINGERS. DC were busy finding ORGIES and missed both of the eights.

Round 11: O N E E K S E D S

Roy: SEEDS (5)
Dan: NEEDS (5)
DC: KNEES, (5) KEENS (5)
OT: DONEES (6) KEENED (6) SENSED (6) SKENES (6) SNOEKS (6) SONDES (6)
Score: 52–59 (max 87)

A tough selection produces fives in the studio. Numerous sixes on offer, surprised DC don't spot any.

SNOEK - A long predatory fish of the mackerel family.
SONDE - A rocket, balloon, or probe used for observing in the upper atmosphere.

Round 12: M R N O O A P U L

Roy: MAROON (6)
Dan: MAROON (6)
DC: LOON, (4) PUMA, (4) LAMPOON (7)
OT: UNMORAL (7)
Score: 58–65 (max 94)

With both contestants marooned on six it's up to DC to spot one of the sevens available. Three rounds to go and the challenger leads by seven. Crunch time for Roy!

Round 13: R D E A Z R I C P

Roy: CARRIED (7)
Dan: -
DC: PARRIED, (7) CAPER, (5) CARPED (6)
OT: CRAZIER (7) PARRIED (7)
Score: 65–65 (max 101)

Good max spot by Roy to level the scores and guarantee a crucial conundrum. I want to know what Dan's word was though. DC spotted one of the other sevens but it's so much better to get CRAZIER!

Round 14: 5, 10, 7, 10, 50, 75. Target: 285.

Roy: 285. (10-7)*75 +50 +10 (10)
Dan: -
Score: 75–65 (max 111)

A third perfect numbers round for Roy sees him take the lead for the first time since round one and puts him in a good position to retain the champions chair.

Round 15: F E R R I C O N E

Roy buzzes on 14 seconds to say REINFORCE which is correct.
Final Score: 85–65 (max 121)

Another conundrum solve by Roy keeps him on track for a Quarter final place. A close run game but a late surge from the champion eventually saw off a spirited competitor. Can he get another win tomorrow?

'Twas Sunday.

Other than that, an excellent first recap. 8-)
I'm not dead yet. In a rut right now because of stress from work. I'll be back later in S89. I also plan to bring back the Mastergram - if I can find a way to run a timer or clock through pure MediaWiki without having to upload to Vimeo every time.
