Countdown recap for Tuesday 22 April 2014.

Apologies for the slightly later than usual recap, which comes to you on Wednesday morning rather than Tuesday afternoon. I had some problems accessing the site, and then there was the small matter of Chelsea vs Atletico to take my attention in the evening. But it's here now, and this recap is of the first game since Mark Murray's scintillating octorun came to a triumphant conclusion, so we have two new players in the chairs today.

C1: Challenger Phil Whitman.
C2: Challenger Julie Devine.
DC: Susie Dent and Arlene Phillips.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

R01: T N A L X E P I E
R02: N R A U E S V D I
R03: 50, 25, 6, 3, 5, 7. Target: 984.

R04: O M S I A R G C E
R05: T D P I A H O L E

R07: U A F T R E N T O
R08: E S S A O M G E D
R09: 100, 75, 50, 1, 9, 4. Target: 505.

And now a brief interlude before our main feature:

Round 1: T N A L X E P I E

Phil: PLANET (6)
Julie: PLIANT (6)
DC: PIXELATE (8)
Score: 6–6 (max 8)

Sixes from both contestants here, while DC spot the darrenic eight.

Round 2: N R A U E S V D I

Phil: RAVINES (7)
Julie: divers
DC: INVADERS (8)
OT: DENARIUS (8) SANDIVER (8) UNVARIED (8)
Score: 13–6 (max 16)

Julie mistakenly declares her six as a five, but it wouldn't have mattered anyway as Phil had a seven. DC get one of the four eights.

Round 3: 50, 25, 6, 3, 5, 7. Target: 984.

Phil: -
Julie: -
RR: 984. (50x3-5)x7-(25+6) (10)
Score: 13–6 (max 26)

A tricky numbers round stumps the contestants, but not Rachel.

Teatime teaser: SALIVATE -> AESTIVAL

Round 4: O M S I A R G C E

Phil: GRACES (6)
Julie: CRIMES (6)
DC: GRIMACES (8) ORGASMIC (8)
Score: 19–12 (max 34)

Sixes from the contestants again, and DC's eights set Nick up for a good line :D

Round 5: T D P I A H O L E

Phil: PLATED (6)
Julie: OPIATED (7)
DC: HOPLITE (7)
OT: HAPLOID (7) HELIPAD (7) LITHOED (7) LOATHED (7) PILOTED (7) PITHEAD (7) PLAITED (7) POTHEAD (7) TADPOLE (7)
Score: 19–19 (max 41)

Phil gets a six, but Julie levels with one of the many sevens.

Round 6: 50, 3, 7, 1, 10, 8. Target: 343.

Phil: 343. Mistake in working.
Julie: 343. 7x50-(8-1) (10)
Score: 19–29 (max 51)

Phil makes a mistake here unfortunately, but Julie gets there. It could be solved without the large number, by making three sevens and multiplying them together. I don't think that's really the standard method though.

Round 7: U A F T R E N T O

Phil: fattner
Julie: FORTE (5)
DC: FORTUNATE (18)
Score: 19–34 (max 69)

Phil is unfortunate here, as he needs another E to add in there for FATTENER, so Julie's safe five takes the points. DC get the nine, good stuff.

Round 8: E S S A O M G E D

Phil: MASSED (6)
Julie: MESSAGED (8)
DC: MEGADOSES (18)
Score: 19–42 (max 87)

A good eight from Julie sees her extend her lead, but DC get the very impressive nine.

Round 9: 100, 75, 50, 1, 9, 4. Target: 505.

Phil: 504.
Julie: 505. (100+1)x(9-4) (10)
Score: 19–52 (max 97)

Julie's lead is a healthy size now as she beats Phil on the numbers round.

Teatime teaser: MOBSMILE -> EMBOLISM

Round 10: B I U M J O G R A

Phil: GRAM (4)
Julie: IMAGO (5)
DC: GOURAMI (7)
Score: 19–57 (max 104)

Phil can't see past a four here, so Julie takes points with a five-letter word again. DC have the darren yet again.

Round 11: T V S I O I P K E

Phil: PIVOTS (6)
Julie: POKIEST (7)
DC: POSITIVE (8)
Score: 19–64 (max 112)

Another good spot from Julie, she's leading very comfortably now. But there was an eight in there, which DC spot.

Round 12: L N O U G I D C A

Phil: CLOUDING (8)
Julie: CODING (6)
Score: 27–64 (max 120)

Phil pulls some points back with a good darrenic eight.

Round 13: T R S O I E F H O

Phil: SOOTHER (7)
Julie: HOOFERS (7)
DC: FORTIES (7) SHOOTER (7)
OT: FOETORS (7) FOOSTER (7) FOOTERS (7) FOOTSIE (7) HERIOTS (7) HOISTER (7) HOOTERS (7) OOFIEST (7) RESHOOT (7) ROOFIES (7) SHIFTER (7) SHORTIE (7) SOFRITO (7) SOOTIER (7)
Score: 34–71 (max 127)

Another very flat round of sevens, this time both contestants get a seven.

Round 14: 75, 1, 5, 3, 7, 2. Target: 482.

Phil: 473. (5+1)x75+7x3+2 (5)
Julie: -
RR: 482. (75+5)x(7-1)+2 (10)
Score: 39–71 (max 137)

Phil takes five points for being just within scoring distance, while Rachel shows us how it's done.

Round 15: W I N T E R R I G

Phil buzzes on 8 seconds to say REWRITING which is correct.
Final Score: 49–71 (max 147)

And Phil pulls back another ten points with the conundrum. He's saved some face towards the end here to make the gap in scores much more respectable, but ultimately Julie was the better player here and deserves her win.

So yesterday's game may have seemed like a bit of a lull after we had gotten used to Mark Murray's superb displays over the past fortnight, and despite neither player capitalising on today's huge max score, Julie played the game well and got herself a good win. Join James later to see if she can win another, and then make sure to join James again on Channel 4 at 4:30, where we will see him on Fifteen to One. 8-)

Statistics
Raw scores: Phil 71 - Julie 77
Maximums: Phil 3 - Julie 4

Both contestants get a six again, DC get one of the many sevens.
Sorry to be picky here but I believe there is something not quite correct in this bit ;)

Ha, thanks for pointing that out, I'll fix it.
