2 other options for numbers game 1:

(25 - (5 + 1)) x 4 x 3

((25 x 2) + 4 + 3) x (5 - 1)

Numbers game 2 alt:

(10 x 9 x 4) - (9 - 5)

SECRETION as an equaller I believe.

The look on Des' face was brilliant :D

R9 RAMEKINS- I thought this was what Charlie was fishing for, in fact.

alternate numbers:

100 x 4 = 400
9 x 5 = 45
10 - 9 = 1

400 - 45 + 1 = 356

WOOLLEN, yes.

R14 alt: 8 x 4 x 7 = 224 x (1 + 1) = 448.

Well done to Charlie for another a century win :)

Well done also to Charlie's apponent for getting RESECTION (well risked as well) and getting 448 at the end etc.

yeah sorry I should have waited until after Dict. Cr. confirmed -is that common form for this forum, only post things that haven't been found after round is all finished?

and nice work on the numbers, I got stuck at 444

No need to apologize Matt. Although yes we do normally wait to see what DC comes up with first!

Was pretty pleased with myself today. Beat Charlie 109-72 albeit as an armchair hero. Beat him with ADMIXES, DILUTER, BARRIO, AEROSTAT (after frantically trying to remember TOASTER + A!), RAMEKINS, the last numbers (altho I only got 440) and conundrum, but he beat me with SAVAGE and SILICONE.

I have ERECTIONS was priceless! Also I liked the girlfriend appeal bit at the end! His best appearance yet IMHO. Strong challenger today. A shame she came up against someone as good as Charlie. I reckon she could have won a few.

toaster + a = very useful to remember!

I feel like the only person who didn't know BARRIO tho - is it the spanish version of a swiss canton then?

Re: Spoilers -- Thursday 23rd October

Hi Matt - a BARRIO is more like a district/quarter of a city or town (often a "slum"). I think a CANTON is an administrative district of a country (like a small county), but I stand to be corrected by s.o.

Indeed there are 10 letters you can add to TOASTER to make an 8 which can be remembered with the acronym (right word?) IBUSTGRAPH

I = TOASTIER
B = ABETTORS
U = OUTSTARE
S = TOASTERS
T = ATTESTOR/TESTATOR
G = GAROTTES
R = ROSTRATE
A = AEROSTAT
P = PROSTATE
H = RHEOSTAT

yes you're bang on with canton - an administrative distinct like a county, I just only half heard Suzie's explanation of barrio so was wondering if that's what it was. thanks for the recap !

and thanks for that Dinos, though i'm not even going to pretend that i'll try and remember it :-)

No-one else has yet claimed NOSEBLEED; only the second or third time I've beaten both contestants to the conundrum.

Well done Charlie and his erections. A shame about a 6 small selection and a nasty conundrum (first one I haven't got in an age).

I honestly thought that NOSEBLEED was a tough conundrum. I normally like the obscurer-word conundrums, but I didn't get this one.

Oi, stop taking my credit and not owning up to it! I was well happy with today, equalling DC/Carol with everything and beating them with RAMEKINS. A nice equaller in round 11 was ECLOSING and in round 12 I had EIDOLON. I thought I was on for a max game again today but then missed the conundrum - was really hard I thought, first one I haven't got in a long time. Turned out I missed 2 more maxes, an 8 in round 1 which lexonerds should know (as indeed I do but didn't spot it) and a 7 in round 4 (which is a bit more obscure).

got nosebleed as well, i normally struggle with them conundrums so i was happy i got it, even more so now i know Conor didn't get it :D

Yeah Charlie got RAMEKIN in a recent online game, but I suppose he'd already recorded by then so he was recalling it the second time.

Was a good game, when I saw SECRETION and ERECTIONS I somehow knew which one Charlie was going to declare :P

Was a bit surprised by the last numbers, given that she'd already lost, but was a good spot (I think we're all using the same method, and 8x7x2x4 (in that order) seems the easiest, I went 2x8x7 to get to 112 first, which made me think it was harder than it actually was), that and an (imo) tough conundrum was a bit of a shame for Charlie's finish, 900 is going to be a tough ask now...

Well done again Charlie, this was your 7th wasn't it? (sorry i've missed a couple this week, and only half-heard today's)

not a great day for me today, half-concentration though but managed:
R2 DISMAY (the only round i beat contestants on)
R11 CEILINGS to equal Charlie
yep got ERECTIONS too and just KNEW Charlie would, think we know how his mind works by now don't we folks? Either Des just knows you are going to try to sabotage his show with bleeps, or has he said off-air yet "Hey i'm the one to raise the laughs here, matey?"

Aww it's a shame you have to leave at Octochamp, getting quite used to you sitting in that chair now.

Does anyone remember: In the early days, did they always have the Octochamp rule? Or would i be right in thinking the champs stayed for however long it took for someone to beat them?

Thanks for answering and for the link Michael, but how strange: just after i asked the question, i read the Drink of Water discussion http://www.c4countdown.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1029 and found this:
Martin Gardner wrote:The only time I ever did this was my 10th (and final game)
Anyone else remember? Could the wiki be incorrect?

Martin made it to the semi-finals in his series, so he got 10 games in total, 8 from his octochamp run, and then the quarter and semi.

He did even better then you Conor. IIRC you only had one erection during your run, but I do seem to remember that both you and your opponent found PLEASURE following it. :lol: I didn't get any; I stuck with SECRETION.
Dinos Sfyris wrote:Also I liked the girlfriend appeal bit at the end!
No doubt the influx of forum members will increase even more now. :)

As for the 6 small numbers round, I found that one of the easier ones, as 448 factorises so well, and both 7 and 8 were in the selection.

And, Charlie, I've now beaten you on three letters rounds, having got DISMAY. Three out of the seventy-seven so far is more than I would have expected.

I had seen MANKIER -> RAMEKIN a few days before and spent most of the round trying to remember the anagram. I finally remembered it, and the obvious plural, during the following DC bit but didn't really feel like butting in to point out the 8.
