Spoilers For Monday February 17th 2014

It's yet another week of Countdown, but this time, thanks to Channel 4 thinking a show about "superstar dogs" will perform well in the ratings, the show is now "back" at 2:40pm to most people's annoyance. :x

But, on the plus side, we do have an Apterite as the current champ, he being Brett Davids, who put in a very strong and composed début performance on Friday in defeating Adrian Day. Will he be the one who becomes the first octochamp of Series 70 :?: :?:

Triple jump world record holder Jonathan Edwards returns in Dictionary Corner this week.

Join Andy for the recap later. ;) :) :D

Nice of Nick to make that birthday offer to the crew - well done Damian in getting him to say it.

Nice one Brett - it's a good feeling getting a 9 on the show, isn't it?

Scramble for the con looks familiar. Has that been on the show before?

Good performance again, Brett, nice to see a nine finally turn up too after a recent drought.

Hope I'm not the only one to have been caught out by the early start time. :P

Did I mishear, or did Christopher get points for LORRIES when there was only one R?

Good episode today, not just for the cake and things at the end, but also for Nick telling Brett before the conundrum that he had a chance of beating the highest score for the series so far. That kind of thing often passes unremarked.

Not valid on Countdown, Scrabble only.

Another stuttering performance from myself there. Whether it's the studio conditions or the lack of sleep (a note to all future players - bring some earplugs because the Holiday Inn Express is NOISY!) so far it's cost me two rounds a game that I'd normally get at home - but I guess that's the difference between Apterous and real life, and it's an even playing field so no complaints!

When I applied to go on the show I wanted a teapot if course, and after that I figured if I was lucky I'd love to hit a nine and a hundred game, so missions accomplished! It did strike me (as mentioned in the recap thread) that sitting back having seen ANTIPODES was a little bit foolish, not least because I leant back so far I very nearly went flying!

Knowing about the top score for the series in advance of the conundrum didn't make any difference- and to be fair the challenger got it just after the bell - but I do agree it adds to the spectacle as a viewer to know these things. I think that 104 stood as a series record probably reflects a little on the quality of play in this series compared with the last - and include myself wi thin that assessment.

It's just nice to know how the series is going now and again and what the seedings are. I guess it can come across as rather bullying the contestants if mentioned too often though.
