Julie simply hadn't watched it yet. I wouldn't worry about it too much, I think 4 days after broadcast is a reasonable amount of time for it to be discussed outside of the specific 'Spoilers' subforum (where each day's show is discussed). A congratulatory thread to
the winner had already been started in the main forum prior to this, after all.
You didn't do anything wrong

I'm afraid it never occurred to me that anybody would not yet have seen the show. I don't have any of the modern options for deferred watching. And I'm the only person in world with a PC without a sound card: it saves an awful lot of YouTubing time, but it does detract from the benefits of Podcasts.
How many years' membership does it take to advance from Newbie to Rookie?

Well because of the timing at the show (ie most of us are at places of work/study) we have a separate section for discussing the current shows, so that we can still chat (and dodge work) after 15:30 on here until we get home and watch the recording. Generally it's considered pretty bad form to mention that day's show anywhere outside of these subforums. But, like I said, there has to be a cutoff point somewhere, otherwise we'd never be able to discuss anything! I reiterate that I think 4 days since broadcast is more than reasonable.

I think that's when you hit 100 posts, or something like that.

Yep. I wouldn't worry about it. I think if established members come into the explicit newbie topic then they should expect some newbie behaviour. Generally I think four days lag time is fine, but if you want to play it safe then we do have a specific Spoilers forum, as you probably noticed by now.

Ooh, I've never heard of apricot being used to describe the colour of an animal before.

Hi fellow Countdowners,
Thanks Charlie for getting me set up on the forum!
I am due to record my first game at 8.15pm today Monday, so I should probably get some sleep.
Excited about the new hosts and new set and more than a little apprehensive about the game, wouldn't mind bagging myself a teapot, but we'll see what happens!

Hi All,
Have been visiting this site since Charlie’s plug, and thought it was about time I joined and introduced myself!
Have been a Countdown fan for years (have just turned 31), but due to school / college / work commitments, only got to watch it occasionally. However, I was made redundant last year and started watching it every day and now watch it religiously. Series 59 was the first time I actually followed the people on it, rather than just playing along, and discovered a whole new side to the programme! (Martin Bishop declaring ‘Arsenal’ being the high spot!)
Would love to go on myself one day but, due to a high level of crapness on my part, probably never will! Have improved a lot this year though, and finally got my first win just before the start of the S59 quarters. I’m not ashamed to admit that some dancing subsequently took place!
Would just like to say well done to Charlie et al for producing a fine forum – the biggest compliment I could give it is that I visit it almost as much as the Arsenal website - almost!
Good luck to Jeff and Rachel today. Looks promising. Really hoping Jeff introduces James Brown at some point!!

Nah, they always ask everyone in each recording session (there are two in a day) to turn up at the same time, the runner doesn't want to be collecting contestants during recording when she has pleny of other things to do.
Personally, I'd have got there as early as possible to soak it up as much as you can. Good luck though! (Remember no spoilers on here once you've filmed please!)

Hi. I'm Dave Williams and I was a contestant in series 59. My claim to fame is that I let Junaid Mubeen win easily so that he could go on to become series champion. I waited 25 years to apply and my advice to all you potential future contestants is: "Don't wait - you'll have a terrific experience!"

Hi there - Katherine from the old place re-joining after a bit of an absence. Would like to apply for Countdown but still haven't plucked up the courage to do so since I am severely numerically dyslexic (dyscalculia) and won't stand a chance in the numbers games unless they're of the 'bleeding obvious' sort!

I dislike the numbers games too, although for no particular medical reason. You can come and hang out on

Hello, I'm Laurent living in Lugano which is in the southern part of Switzerland. I have been watching Countdown for years, along with my wife and children, who of course (the children that is) have learnt their alphabet and numbers through etc etc... We now receive Countdown in Switzerland on Channel 4 through our cable provider. (I won't say how we got it before in case S** cut us off).
Great site Charlie, I learnt about it during your appearance on the show and have finally found some time to sign up and post.
I love the show's new look and as I see there is a thread on that I shall now go over and post my thoughts there.
By the way, it's great to see Suzy still in Dictionary Corner. I was worried she would go as well, and, and I know I'll probably get burnt at the stake for saying this, I prefer her to Carol!!!
