I don't watch X Factor, but thinking about it, isn't what I did the opposite to tactical voting? When people tactical vote in elections, they vote for who they think has a chance of winning, often leaving out the one they really want to vote for (Liberal Democrats?).

(I was trying to think of something really witty to write in reply to Jon's ignoring me, but it won't surprise you to know couldn't think of anything.)

Oh yeah, you must have meant the same thing, sorry. People who were fans of this Oli Garner or whatever his name was, voted for someone else who they also liked because they thought he would get through anyway, right?

(I could have told Jon I love him, but other people could still read it and might believe it!)

Well, not voted for someone else so much as didn't bother to vote at all, which is why I said it was reasoning akin (rather than identical) to yours.
