I would also like to take part - my rating has just gone over 1200 but could quite easily dip below again between now and the start of the tournament so please put me in the appropriate category/categories when you have finalised your line-ups.

Thank you,

Would like to take part, but its Fathers Day on Sunday so can't make 12 noon games - can only play in the evening after 7pm really. Not bothered what group, maybe the retard section?

You've got a whole week to play your match, so as long as your opponent has read this then we're fine.

If it's not too late, I'll go for the open as well Andrew. I thought at first the open was just for players too good to take part in any of the "under-xxx" tourneys, but seems to be for everyone, so, yeah, please.

Guaranteed registration is available through tomorrow; if you try to register on Saturday you might get in and you might not, depending on how convenient the numbers come out.

The field for the Open:
Kirk Bevins|1833
Junaid Mubeen|1760
Jon Corby|1696
Charlie Reams|1643
Innis Carson|1625
Dinos Sfyris|1597
Kai Laddiman|1579
David O'Donnell|1577
Andrew Hulme|1575
Damian Eadie|1550
James Hurrell|1524
Oliver Garner|1469
Ben Wilson|1451
Martin May|1338
Jack Hurst|1325
Jim Bentley|1316
Neil Zussman|1305
Ian Volante|1255
Matt Bayfield|1242
Henry Meier|1164
Mark Harrison|1135
James Doohan|1126
Peter Lee|1119
Aaron Higgs|1086
Jeff Burgin|1076
Tom Rowell|1065
Paul Erdunast|1047
Simon Myers|1043
Matt Morrison|1033
Jay Murphy|1031
James Levison|884
Marc Meakin|850
Ian Dent|665

The field for the U1200:
Barry Evans|1199
Matthew Green|1183
Henry Meier|1164
Marcus Hares|1162
Donald Gordon|1148
Mark Harrison|1135
James Doohan|1126
Tyron Potts|1121
Peter Lee|1119
Aaron Higgs|1086
Jeff Burgin|1076
Tom Rowell|1065
Paul Erdunast|1047
Daniel O'Dowd|1043
Simon Myers|1043

Ian Dent|665

The field for the U1000:
Shaun Hegarty|983
Liam Tiernan|981
James Hall|955
Phil Collinge|900
Andy Wilson|898
James Levison|884
Niall Seymour|834
Ian Dent|665

The field for the U800:
Adam Dexter|724
Maxine Silkstone|722
Ian Dent|665
James Leroux|662
Steve Rogers|461

The open currently has 33 players and the U1200 currently has 23, so no troubles there. (I'll use accelerated pairings in the open which will certainly make things interesting.) The U1000 currently has 8 and the U800 currently has 5 (+ maybe Howard Somerset). If the U1000 stays at 8, we'll split that up into two pools of four and do RR+crossover (so the top two from each pool will play their counterparts on the other side). If the U800 gets to 8 it will do the same; if it's at six, then it's straight round robin (and that way Howard can make up his games as necessary). I plan to use pool play for 10 players as well; 12 will be Swiss as advertised.

Fun fact: If we kicked off with the field as it is right now, round 1 would feature Kirk Bevins vs Neil Zussman.

I'm very happy with this arrangement, so long as the others in the U800 competition are too. Though it might be better to play some of my games in advance rather than in arrears. I'll await the final details, and if it does work like this, I'll then make arrangements with the other players.

Many thanks. :)

Yes several times, although I admit that I am a bit impatient, and sometimes retract challenges when someone else is available
I also am unsure of etiquette when challenging people
Should I ask first, in the chat area rather than just challenge in the usual way

I would just challenge away, that's what the system is there for. If I decline or ignore a challenge it normally means I'm logged in but working on the site, but generally I try to point this out in the chat window.

If it is a 32-man knock-out, can there be a plate/bowl/shield/whatever is after those for the people who don't win their first/second/third etc matches and have matches to decide any position.

To clarify, you will play five games in every section you've registered for. With two extra people in the open, this means that we will be using accelerated pairings, so Neil and/or Kirk can breathe a sigh of relief.

Just out of interest, how are you generating the Swiss pairings?

Re: Apterous Summer Open

Posted: Thu Jun 18, 2009 6:26 pm

It will be using standard Swiss pairings (accelerated in the open). I've got, somewhere, my USCF TD card so I'm supposed to be able to pair a full-sized tournament in ten minutes using just two twigs, a piece of pocket lint, a hairpin, some index cards, and a pen. I was reminded recently about tsh, so I'll look at that again (when I first looked at it, it was very good at tournaments that had way too many rounds like Scrabble tends to do -- 40 players in a 25-round "Swiss" -- and completely atrocious at normal tournaments).

Edit: Looked at it again, and I've got Swiss working. No idea what I'd done wrong the first time. I'll see if it will handle accelerated pairings.

Edit edit: No, tsh is pretty broken when it comes to Swiss, but it's broken in a completely predictable way (it reseeds players every round based on their margin of victories in the tournament, as opposed to, you know, their rating). I'll probably send a note to Mr. Chew, but I'll just do this one on cards. I like cards.

Alright, at the moment we've got 40 in the open, 26 in the U1200, 10 in the U1000, and 8 in the U800 (without Howard) (sorry Howard). That means extras who try to register late (i.e., today) I can only take in pairs, except in the open, where I would need another four to take anybody in.

Oh and as it's a common question, here's the Wikipedia description of a Swiss system tournament (also including description of accelerated pairings). The Open will use accelerated Swiss, the U1200 will use just plain Swiss, and the U1000 and U800 will use pool play + crossover (unless they get to 12 over the course of today).

I'm not in any of the sections yet, so if we don't find anyone I can probably fill in the gap (I'd prefer 12 to 10 anyway). If we can find someone for the open (or another someone in U1200) we can move Lesley around.

EDIT: Given Mr Crawley's rating, I'm thinking he's ineligible for U1000. I've put him in U1200 for now and done all the necessary rejigging.

I was planning a forum topic for each week's worth of games (each to last a week, etc.). Those may well have a link to somewhere where I'll post an HTML standings table, given what we've learned about tables in the league thread. (I suppose I can send you the HTML too, if you want to host it. You may have to do some massaging, or I should pay more attention to your CSS.)
