I guess it got in because it's listed as a plural noun, so there is no singular (at least, according to the ODE).
Correct. This has been discussed before.

On the fifty conundrum duel I got to about 20-25 conundrums and then things started grinding by very slowly. I figured it was a memory issue, which seems to be beared out in the useful part of the log:

Humm. Seems unlikely. Was anyone else online at the time?
Just had some more speedgoats with prime and again my losses were reported and not my wins. I may try some different games with bots and see if it's a wider problem.
I beat Prune in a game the other day and nothing was said in the chat window.

I like the new bold typeface on reviews for maximums - however, I got a maximum in round 13 but not sure why it's not in bold. Is it because it's a classic game and in the old dictionary there was a possible 8? According to the max on the site I got the max that round anyway?

Just had a Duelfreeze, after completing round 7 of the latest one. Mr. Java Console had this to say (it's very long, I'm afraid, I didn't really know how far to go back with it, and there seems to be a lot of extraneous stuff in there):

It's just a good old-fashioned disconnection I'm afraid, Jim, and I suspect the problem is at my end. Log back in and have another go.

Cheers, will do. I did miss something in one round but I'll intentionally miss it again. I am a man of honour, or something.

Not sure why but this morning when I went in there were no robots available to play and no daily duel. I was not able to play a classic game either - Is this a continuation of the problems that you mentioned Charlie, that might occur for a couple of days?

In the numbers games, you can click on a number and then click it back up and down again and keep doing that indefinitely to stall for time. I don't think you can do it when all six numbers are up, but as soon as you've done one calculation, I think it lets you do that.

Not really a bug as such but the bold typeface for new records (usually you can tell on the high scores page if a record has been broken that day as today's date is in bold) is no longer there.

I think this is fixed now, but someone will need to get a record to test it.

When I'm doign Dily Duel and the pop-up window freezes and stops displaying contents (at which point everything else hangs too), if I close everything down and go back in, my daily duel has disappeared from Games In Progress. This doesn't seem to happen with other types of game.

This is because Charlie doesn't want people to close the daily duel down mid-round, reload the duel and then replay the same round having well more than 30 seconds to look at it. With other types of games, if you crash mid-round and reload it the round is replayed but with different letters. The duel, however, has to have the same letters.
The bug, then, is the question of why the daily duel crashes/freezes in the first place.

Ah, I see.

Well I assume Charlie already knows about that, seeing as it seems to be happening to a lot of people. Happens to me a lot. Everything going fine, then pop-up window doesn't repaint itself and is see-through. Sound effects continue, implying software is still doing stuff, just not visible. Interestingly sound effects continue after I close the Play window down too - don't go until I've closed down IE (which by this time has hung).

The one with the exclamation marks on the top right? You want to get rid of that. Use update 7. I had to uninstall update 11 and put on update 7 to get it to work freely.

Yes, there are exclamation marks. Funny, I hadn't noticed them until you pointed them out.

How annoying, Java had been shouting at me for a while to install the update and I'd been ignoring it, then did it specially before attempting to use Apterous. Pah.

Judging by the absence of games played lately (except by me, and I have Magic Powers), I'd guess I've made a boo-boo. There's not much I can do about it until I get home this evening. In the mean time I suggest no one attempts to play the Duel, because you won't be able to declare.

I take it that since I can't get onto apterous, and there hasn't been any games for an hour, that it's down again?
Hopefully the duel will carry over, although I've got a busy day tomorrow, might not have time to catch up.

Not really a bug as such, but my clock definitely goes round too slowly. Having done some timing this evening I get about 12 seconds in speed rounds. Strangely I tried on two comps and they were both slow by the same amount.

Aside from having slightly longer to think, it also means I sometimes get 10 points for buzzing after the final letter of a goatundrum has been revealed.

Which reminds me that the timing of the bots (apterous prime anyway) on goatundrums could use some tweaking. At the moment it either takes 1.5-3s or doesn't get it at all, so you know you can relax a bit after 3s. Having another window in 11-13s when the bot has a high chance of buzzing would add realism.

Yeah. I've never got to the bottom of this. Does the clock go round smoothly but slower, or does it stall at some point?

This bug is basically your fault, I made the solution times normally distributed at your suggestion. Therefore I'm not fixing it.

Really though, the distributions should be log-normal (as I discovered later) so I'll fix that sometime.

I think the best way to describe it would be jittery, it goes round smoothly for a bit, before stalling very (almos imperceptibly) briefly before continuing. I think I get about 10-15 such jitters in a typical speed round.

I've noticed this on several occasions now, but was finally pushed into reporting it by today's all-Conundrum Duel.

The Conundrum window seems to have a maximum height and no scroll bar. Mostly, this isn't noticeable; but if the dialogue runs on for a bit (typically, when both players have a go at the Conundrum and get it wrong, and then the host asks the audience and nobody there gets it either), by the time the host announces the actual solution, it's disappeared off the bottom of the window and you can't scroll down to see it. Likewise, the Done button isn't visible.

It's not a major problem, as you can always just close the window normally and see what the solution was in the round summary; but it's a bit untidy.

On a related note, and not a bug at all, just an inconsistency: since the advent of the C and V keyboard shortcuts for picking letters, I tend to use the keyboard as much as possible in preference to the mouse, and keep my thumb poised over the space bar to press the Start game/Done/etc buttons to move from round to round. However, the Done button in the Conundrum window doesn't let you press it using the space bar - you have to hit the return key instead, which is marginally annoying but would be nice to have fixed if it's simple to do.

PS Any chance you can post (in the first post of this thread, maybe?) brief idiots' guide on how to find the Java Console - for people like me who don't (well, didn't) know what it is or where to find it? I used Google in the end, but, you know, people can be lazy / scared. I did try scrolling through the bug reports thread, but all references I found seemed to already assume people would know what it was. And yes, it'sa long thread and I didn't read all the way through the whole thread. I tried searching the forum for "Java console" but that didn't yield anything either. I'm really not trying to be awkward, honest.

For anyone reading this who is as confused / confusable as me... you should have a Java icon in your taskbar (bar along the bottom of the screen). Right click, select "Open Console" and copy the last page or two of what's there. NB: Scroll to the end, that's the most recent stuff.

PPS Re chat not working. It was a different PC from the one I'm on now. If it happens again on that one, I'll check out the Java console.

All the time, literally. Takes like about 50 refreshes to let me in and then every so often I won't be able to challenge someone and people said that I didn't appear on the list. When I close that window down and try to click "play" again, I get the "connection reset" message.

Couple of problems this evening...

[incidentally, do you always like consoles to be PMed to you Charlie, or only when you specifically request it? Thought I'd better not, in case you just got swamped...]

Firstly, accepted a challenge from Stuart Moore...
Played first letters round, input letters, clock finished, said waiting for opponent... nothing happened. I closed down the letters window and there was a chat message waiting for me, i entered a response but it didn't appear in the chat pane. I closed down the game window and again, could enter chat in main window but it didn't appear in the chat pane.

Secondly, when I tried to accept the daily duel, the Accept Challenge button appeared to click, but nothing happened. Here is the console:

As with Clare, the duel too crashed for me, but this was when I tried to start round 5. I didn't copy any of the console though (to show the problem) as I didn't know what to copy.

I'm locking this topic, I just can't handle the weight of this many bug reports at the moment. I don't think people realise how hard it is to run a 25,000-line project with 200 users on your own. It's seriously damaging my ability to do anything else with my life and I literally spend whole days feeling frustrated about how unreliable this piece-of-shit program has become. I have no idea of the problem, I have no idea how to fix it, and I have no idea where to start looking for it. I need a fucking break.

If the server goes down, email me and I'll restart it. Other than that I'm done.

Not a bug in the software as such, but a glitch in the data: in a game yesterday, William Shakespeare as the DC guest pointed out that I could apparently have had "$wrds" for 7.

That would be my fault. Please can you fix this Charlie.

When did this get unlocked? Anyway, is Apterous totally down? I can't even got on the website itself, so I can't see the recent games or anything. I will try the CDB as that is part of the same URL.
