I got round the bug in the third numbers game by typing the calculation out in full in the box (using brackets )

I ending up aborting on the duel I was that annoyed about not scoring on numbers. I then tested in a game against Prune and it seems to vary when the commit attempt froze - on one attempt the 2nd commit froze whereas I got to the 3rd commit on the next game before it froze and timed out. Charlie - please fix this quickly because I'm too slow at trying to type out with brackets.

I incorrectly guessed a goatdown conundrum after the ninth letter came up. When the letters came back after my incorrect guess, the ninth letter was hidden again.

For the past hour or so I haven't been able to load the game properly. Here's a screengrab of what I see when I log in. Below is the Java Console data for the log-in (I cut out the shortcuts key to save space).

It wasn't a Mac problem, although it was a problem caused by my switch to developing on a Mac. (So much for "write once, run anywhere".) Fixed now.

Charlie, you may recall I had a problem a few months ago with round windows not popping up. Well today it's come back. Below is the Java console data for a numbers round that didn't pop up in the game between myself and Scott Gillies (c. 11.27pm). There's some lobby chat in there too but I included it all because I don't know which bits you need. This has happened in letters rounds too (and probably could in conundrum rounds).

I find this happens quite often on my MacBook, but there's no error in the console, and I usually find eventually that the window did appear, but underneath/behind/minimized or something else stupid like that.

To give you some history on the problems with apterous and Macs (and vent some of my own frustration on the subject): for some reason Apple have always insisted on maintaining their own version of Java. On all other platforms, Sun (the owners of Java) maintain it and therefore Windows, Linux etc are kept in sync, and this was always one of the major selling points of Java. Apple's version tended to be a little behind, which was annoying, but no major problems. Then, in December 2006, Java 6 arrived (also known as Java 1.6, confusingly enough). At this point, Apple decided that they couldn't really be arsed maintaining their version of Java any more. But also they didn't want to turn over maintenance of the platform to Sun. So, to get to the point, Mac Java has been frozen for the last 3.5 years. And 3.5 years is a long time in programming languages. Apple occasionally issue security updates, and will insist on Software Update that your version of Java is up-to-date, but compared to any other operating system, it really isn't. They have continued to update Java for their 64-bit architecture, so if you have a more recent Mac, you're probably fine. But the vast majority of their installed base are using 32-bit hardware and really don't want to buy a very expensive new Mac just to run Java. So they've completely fucked over a large proportion of their customers, including me (and you by the sound of it), for no reason other than their desire to control every piece of software run on the platform. As far as possible I write around the limitations of Macs, but occasionally it's just impossible, and when you get mysterious bugs like disappearing windows, you've only got Apple to blame. So now you know.

But it hasn't happened for months. Literally not once. Then suddenly twice in 15-round games. Are you sure you didn't change something that might be related? Because otherwise I won't be able to play many fair games where my opponent doesn't feel guilty about beating me. When it's my pick I just log out and in, but when it's their pick I just lose the round if I don't log out within 30-odd seconds.

The only thing I've changed in the client for weeks is fixing the multiply/divide symbols. More likely something else has changed on your Mac. Did Apple release a new version of Java recently? I don't pay much attention.

Not sure if Kieran Child's max game of 0 should be on here: http://www.apterous.org/viewformat.php?format=140

Yes it says it's been excluded like a naughty schoolchild but it still appears on that page and also this one.

Well I did a manual software update check the other day and it said there were no new updates. I certainly can't recall any Java updates recently. I'll just have to hope that it will fix itself - maybe today's problems were anomalous.

Cheers. The exclusion feature was quite a recent addition and a lot of older code doesn't check for it. I tried to catch them but there's probably plenty that I missed, so please report them as you spot them.

This could possibly just be my computer, and it certainly isn't important, but the records on the high score page that are supposed to be highlighted in red are actually green.

I just had the plural PRODIGIES as a conundrum in this game http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?ke ... 5254428662

Unless plurals have been allowed as conundrums for nasty nums 15 rounders i wonder how this one got through the net...

Strictly speaking, I believe the rule is that plurals formed by adding an -S aren't allowed...

Don't know if this is a bug or not, but re: the News of 6 August:
Improved: Slightly increased the conundrum difficulty cap for most players, since not enough people were enjoying the delights of 10/10 conundrums.
After this change was made, I became eligible for Diamond difficulty conundrums. (In fact, I got faced with quite a lot of them.)

A few days later (not sure exactly when), I no longer got any Diamond difficulty conundrums: I haven't had a single one in many rounds. This is despite my rating increasing over this period.

Adam Gillard (whose rating is similar, but slightly higher than mine) has had the same experience.

Has the conundrum difficulty cap somehow reverted to the old system? Or could it be just because you've re-set most or all of the Diamond difficulty conundrums to a difficulty of 1, in order to get more data?

Clearly, if it's the latter, there is no problem/bug.

Yeah, I reverted the change. I'm not sure what went wrong but it seemed suddenly everyone was facing diamonds all the time and that's a more significant problem in terms of discouraging newbies. I may revisit this at some point.

From the history series - Dec 2008: "This month, apterous gained 43 new users, taking us to 170 in total."
Jan 2009: "This month, apterous gained 43 new users, taking us to 1064 in total."
Feb 2009: "This month, apterous gained 69 new users, taking us to 1133 in total."

The numbers seem to have gone wrong for Jan 2009 and have affected Feb too.

This is more just for inquisitive purposes, but no better place to post.
Anyway, I've only just noticed the huge discrepancy between the time a Top Dog game is finished and the time that Mr. Dog comments on it.

I'm basing this on 30 seconds of research on this James Bradley game alone:

When someone's playing in a foreign language chat reports (e.g. 'cos this happened loads today) "Karen Pearson got a pencil for something" and then didn't give us the opportunity to guess it. I know that it's cos chat was littered with foreign attempt offers so can we please just find out what the word is when it's a 9?

Also, the mouse-over of my Gold Bug (tyvm ;) ) just shows gobbledegook.

Thanks :)

It's not about uncluttering foreign pencils Lesley - it's because the "can you work out the 9?" game would be spoiled if the pencil was revealed at the same time.
Of course, you're subsequently not seeing the "can you work out the 9?" game (presumably) as you don't have the language in question ticked, which is where the confusion comes from.
Most obvious solution would be for Charlie to hide pencil announcements along with the already-hidden 9 games for languages you don't have selected.

Hi Lesley. I've only just realised you asked me about it. Sorry for ignoring you! I wasn't paying attention to chat.

I think it just said 'something' because it was a 9 and above that (looking back at the chat archive), it says 'Karen Pearson got a Spanish nine from LNARCMOZE; can you spot it?'.

Needless to say, I was feeling jolly pleased with myself because, as you may have noticed, I miss masses on 9s in Spanish!

I knew that foreign 9s weren't part of the find-the-9 game any more, so I thought it would be good to be able to see what the pencils were for :) I hadn't realised they only came up though if you've got that particular language option ticked. Good thinking :) Karen's first full-frontal - fair play :D  .

Slippers have notoriously long been broken. I think somewhere when Charlie started these item pages he said something to the effect of "so now you can all finally see just how broken slippers are". NSB4U! :)

Nothing huge, but this does need tidying up for consistency:

On the site, non-closest max numbers games are no longer bold, but they are still bold in-game.

This German 9 game appears in the German 9 page under "lowest max". The reason the max was so low was a bug that caused the German dictionary used by apterous to be reduced only to words beginning with A.

Suggest that the above game should be excluded. As should the following game, affected by the same bug.

Hi.

On today's Duel it was maxes only Goatdown. I got one of the conundrums (Round 12) before the last letter was revealed and, although I was correct, it didn't give me the point. And, believe me, I need any extra points I can get.
