C1: VROOM (5)
C2: VROOM (5)

C2: SARCENET (8)
OT: ARSENATE (8) SERENATA (8) CATERANS (8)
Score: 100–100 (max 107)

It's 100 a piece as we go into the final numbers. It will be a crucial conundrum whatever happens now and it reminds me of my proper semi final against Neil Zussman. Composure needed.

Round 14: 5, 6, 4, 10, 8, 6. Target: 820.

C1: 000.
C2: 820. ((6+5)x8-6)x10 (10)
Score: 100–110 (max 117)

Dinos blanks and I manage to spot 820.

Round 15: L I E D T O E A T

C2 buzzes on 1 second to say ETIOLATED which is correct.
Final Score: 100–120 (max 127)

I buzz instantly to say ETIOLATED, a word I learnt from Innis Carson recently (thanks Innis) and come through a superb semi final with a 14 max game. Had I have gone for TETTERS in round 2, or seen to shift the 's' for STUTTER I think this would have been the first perfect game in 15 round CO-event history. Oh well. I was through to the final and pleased.

Round 11: L T T U A U L N E

C1: ULULATE (7)
C2: LUNULAE (7)
OT: LUNULATE (8)
Score: 74–67 (max 83)

I declare first and I had ULULATE and LUNULATE which I was only 90% sure of. I gambled on Richard not having a 7 so I went for the safe 7 hoping to build a bigger lead but he also had a 7. D'oh. The 8 was indeed valid and would have put me 15 ahead.

C2: 727. 50x2x7+8x4-5 (10)
Score: 98–91 (max 107)

A relatively straightforward numbers game and it means the final of COLEI will be decided by a crucial conundrum. How many crucials have I had to win CO-event titles? Countless. Surely my experience in this situation would pull me through?

Round 15: P C W H I S K E R

C2 buzzes on 11 seconds to say SHIPWRECK which is correct.
Final Score: 98–101 (max 117)

It didn't. Rich spots SHIPWRECK on 11 seconds to go ahead for the first time in the match and win the game. Rich is absolutely over the moon and I feel like I've been kicked in the teeth. A great game but the opportunities were there for the win, e.g. HOONED/HOOFED and LUNULATE in particular. Richard wins his first CO-event and maybe the first of many to come. Well played mate.

Interesting tactical situation here. How sure do you have to be that Richard won't have a 7 for this to be the right decision? I think we can assume that if it sticks you win, but if it doesn't you still have about a 50/50 chance of winning, perhaps better. Any probabilistically-minded people out there able to help calculate this?

I had obviously seen ULULATE and LUNULAE and I was hoping Rich either didn't know them or hadn't spotted them as two Us are rare. Sadly, my gamble didn't pay off. Probabilities for this are likely to be hard to calculate as the words will obviously vary. Had I had access to lexplorer in my memory and I could check to see whether ULULATE/LUNULAE had ever been offered by him then that would have helped my decision.

Sure but just as you can say you're 90% sure of a word, you can say there is some value for how likely you believe Richard is to know and spot one of those 7s, x%, below which you should stick with a 100% 7 and above which you should risk the 90% 8. I think you'd have to be very sure he wouldn't get a 7 for your strategy to be the winningest.

At the risk of treading on Dmitri's toes, if Kirk is 90% sure of the 8 and is sure that Rich will declare either a 6 or a 7 then we need to assign probabilities of Kirk winning to each situation after round 11.

Kirk's lead after round 11, % chance Kirk wins.
15 , 95%
14 , 95%
7 , 80%
1 , 70%
0 , 60%
(Feel free to supply more realistic probabilities if these seem unfair)

Using these figures you can calculate that Kirk should declare the 8 if there is >=18% chance of Rich having the 7.

Do you want to be known as Rachel or Carol on the recaps?

For the game when I was dishing out the letters/numbers, I'm happy to be referred to in recaps as Rachel. On the basis you'd struggle to find anyone who looked less like me... ;-)

All matches have now been recapped and full details can be found in the CoLei summer special thread.

Thanks and enjoy.

Nice one Jeff - I enjoyed looking back at all of those... even if neither of us particularly covered ourselves in glory with our dCedL performances!
