I need the next step up from playing an 8-year-old bro who strops out on every numbers game I beat him (e.g. Target is 951, I get 941, he gets 940)

Jeff, Just so you know, I am unsure as to whether I will be able to attend or not. I do not know what the arrangements will be when I get to uni, so don't know if I will be able to miss a saturday to come to this.

I've decided to do what I think is the sensible option and book the Friday night in the hotel itself.

Wahey, I've just got back form CoLeiii, which was an epic blast.
As Jack mentioned, it was Bevins vs Bayfield in the final, a very tight affair, which almost was opinched at the end by Matt, but it was Kirk who won 73-65.
I'll get my recaps from the day up as soon as possible.
Oh, and I came 3rd
And I happened to be the only person that day to beat a certain Mr. Bevins.
I'm never gonna forget that 1.

Re: CoLei3 - Saturday 16 October 2010
The Division A grand final came down to a crucial conundrum... which was a word not in the list of 9060 Normal variant apterous conundrums (according to Lexplorer anyway), and that neither Kirk nor I thought we had heard of - though we both had good (but wrong) stabs at the answer! (Karen, and I believe others watching the final, had heard of the word, so it wasn't ultra-obscure. In fact, on reflection, it was a good choice by Jeff for a grand final conundrum... it certainly led to a tense finale.)
Anyhow, to say I hadn't ever seen the word before isn't entirely true... all I can claim is that my memory doesn't stretch as far back as May or last October! (Spoilers to the crucial conundrum if you follow the links btw.)
Well done to Kirk for finally winning a CoLei title after coming so close every previous time, and well done to the other prizewinners today (who I think were: Div B: Josh 1st, Amie 2nd; Div C: Stewart 1st, Anna 2nd).
Thank you to Jeff and Judi for hosting, as well as all who helped make CoLei3 a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable event for me. I hope some of you are still in the pub as I write
[Edited to correct what I think was an error in the list of prizewinners - I previously had Stewart and Anna round the other way.]

Great event. I think the format this year worked really well. People seemed to be filtered into the correct divisions based on their abilities. My fave moment was James beating Kirk.... LOL! Well done to Matt for getting to the final too. Cheers again Jeff for running such a smooth event.
T'was also great to meet and play against some people I've met on apterous. Thanks for all being supportive to my disabled friend Chris too. It was a nice day out for him. And finally, James, it was like a Madonna concert with all of your costume changes. Can I be your backing dancer in future?
Looking forward to Lincoln already!

CoLei3 in Figures
77: number of rounds played by all the entrants
22: number of entrants
21: number of seconds after incorrectly buzzing that Kirk thought he'd let slip another CoLei title
13: duration of manhug between James Robinson and Ryan Taylor, in seconds
6: number of prizewinners
6: combined number of different shirts worn by James Robinson and Dinos Sfyris (not all at the same time, I hasten to add)
4: number of crucial conundrums required to settle the first round match between Amie and Alex
3: number of absolutely cracking solutions to difficult numbers games produced by Martin Bishop in his final game
2: number of people to try on Ryan's glasses
2: number of Stewart Gordon's pens which ran out of ink during a crucial numbers game
2: number of people who got sausaged
0: number of valid nine-letter words offered in letters rounds
Feel free to correct or extend this list, particularly with pub-related shenanigans...

Hahah loving the CoLeiii by numbers Matt. Also, awesome performance today too, player of the day for me.
Really enjoyed today meeting old faces and new ones too. I got really excited when Rhys Benjamin/Robert Baxter was actually at the event and does indeed exist. I think this alone made the day for me.
Thanks to Jeff and his team for all the work that is put into it.

Brilliant day! Thanks so much to Jeff, Judi and Bee for all your hard work. Up to the same high standard as usual!
It was great to see more women there; lovely to meet Amie and also Yvonne and great to see Anna and Mary Jo again.
Highlight for me was beating Conor on a round. Admittedly I wasn't actually playing against Conor in that game but it all counts as far as I'm concerned.
Lowlight was scoring a miserable 20 points against Amie! She reckons I let her win and oh how I wish that were the case!
Roll on CoLei 2011!

Dinos changed his shirt?? I think maybe the lunchtime wine had a detrimental effect because my powers of observation seem to have deserted me! Or maybe it was that I had sensory overload from James's lovely tangerine limited edition Terriers shirt!Matt Bayfield wrote:CoLei3 in Figures

I will certainly do this if you and Matt come to COLIN in January. It could get a bit complicated though, especially if Matt brings his video of him touching Floella Benjamin, which I've agreed to watch for 50p a time. Also I've suddenly decided that I'll give you and Matt £7.50 each if you perform Touch My Bum by the Cheeky Girls, complete with dance routine. The money flow could get difficult to track. I might have to start a spreadsheet.Heather Badcock wrote:My heart literally just broke. You bastard.Matt Morrison wrote:I've touched Floella Benjamin.

Re: CoLei3 - Saturday 16 October 2010
He certainly did. Dinos arrived in a resplendent sparkly number which he announced was the shinkiest shirt in his collection. But he didn't want to be the shinkiest man in the room so he changed after Round One into a blue shirt.Karen Pearson wrote:Dinos changed his shirt??
(Sorry, bit of a private joke, but those who were sitting near Dinos and I during our quarter-final, will get the reference!)

Re: CoLei3 - Saturday 16 October 2010
Cheers Jeff for organising another great event and was great to see new people and old (and 'old' that I've not seen for a while, like Conor).
I feel like this is probably one of the hardest CO-events to win. With this format I could afford to lose in the first 3 games (which happened in one game) and still be put into the top division as a lower seed. After this it became knock-out so you can't afford to lose. If somebody else lost one game here they'd have no chance of winning the tournament so you have to make sure if you're gonna lose it's in the first 3 games only(!). Also the knock out stages are 9 rounders which are notoriously hard to win over good players which makes my win over Conor even sweeter, particularly since I went 7-0 down. Then the final is an old 14 rounder (8 letters 4 numbers 2 conundrums). Speedy conundrums are vital in most games, particularly 9 rounders, but to potentially lose 20 points and have less letters rounds to make up the losses the numbers play a vital part here I feel. Certainly my best CO-event win to date as I found it tough to come through. Here's to winning one and being undefeated though!

First time I've managed to get to a computer since but thanks for another great tournament Jeff.Very well organised and great fun Luck wasn't on my side - 3 defeats on the conundrum,2 of them when I was ahead - but it was nice to see everyone again and meet a few new faces too And of course very well done to Kirk, and Matt for making it an exciting final.

Cheers Jeff and Judi for a cracking day. Well done to Kirk and Matt for putting on a spectacular final. I almost had to borrow one of Karen's Tena lady pads (sorikaren!) You filled me with childlike EXCITEMENT and for that you guys are my heroes. Cheers as well to Ryan for the brandysnaps which I eventually found! It was cool to meet Rhys too and Matt's kid Morgan who remembered me as "The Yellow Guy" and turned out to be my morganite in mine and Matt's quarter final

A fuller spreadsheet with stats and scores is available on request (jeffrey_clayton@hotmail.com) and has already been despatched to the inboxes of all attendees.
Do feel free to post your recaps - there is an emerging recaps thread on the forum - and any photos though it appears most of those are going live on VisageLivre et al.
Cheers to Kirk for his observations - I had thought a fair bit about formats and wanted a combination of max points in the heats, killer knockouts at the QF and SF and then all-round ability shining in the final. The A/B/C grouping setup came straight from Chiffres/Lettres tournaments though the order of play across the Channel is always much more rigid, so CoLei3 came to be a composite of some five years of tournament experiences in England and in France.
I hope people enjoyed (if that's the right word) the preset numbers in the QF/SF/F and that this took more games to the wire, and it was also good to see that the grand final numbers games didn't succumb to straightforward easy targets. And I think we'll be talking about that grand final for some time to come. Well earned prizes to both winner and runner-up and of course, to all of the other group winners and runners-up who took away prizes, enjoy them!
All being well, we can do it again next year??
Don't forget to sign up for the next tournament in January, hosted by Ben Wilson in Lincoln - details are available for CoLin7.
Merci!
Jeff
