Apterous Summer Open 2010 Week 6B

Post by Andrew Feist »

First, the new games (the finals for the U1400):

The top flight (playing for 1/2/3/4):
Jim Bentley vs. Lloyd Pettet
Adam Gillard vs. Michael Wallace
Jim Bentley vs. Michael Wallace

The second flight (playing for 5/6/7/8):
Dan Seasmith vs. Lee Simmonds
Karen Pearson vs. Liam Tiernan
Dan Seasmith vs. Liam Tiernan
Karen Pearson vs. Lee Simmonds

The third flight (playing for 9/10/11/12):
Tom Rowell vs. Ian Volante
Chris Philpot vs. Josh Hurst
Tom Rowell vs. Josh Hurst
Chris Philpot vs. Ian Volante

The fourth flight (playing for 13/14/15):
James Doohan vs. Andy Wilson
Niall Seymour vs. Andy Wilson

------------------------------------------------
Next, the apologies: I managed to miss the result between Andrew Herbertson and Miriam Nussbaum which came in as I was getting things ready at the end of last week. I should have found it and given you each another game. Sorry.

------------------------------------------------
And last, some results. In the Open, there were four players who finished at 5-1; the tiebreaker was games-above-.500, and so the results are:
  1. Kirk Bevins, 5-1, +8
  2. Dale Levell, 5-1, +7
  3. Innis Carson, 5-1, +6
  4. Oliver Garner, 5-1, +5
  5. Dinos Sfyris, 5-1, +3
Kirk ended up playing everyone on the list except Oliver (losing only to Dale), while Dale and Oliver lost to Dinos.

You'll be able to see the result of the U1200 finals here, someday, I hope. Matt Morrison finished in third.

U1400 Playoff thing Jim Bentley 100 - 98 Michael Wallace

A suspiciously solid start took us to 58-58 out of 60 at round 8, before I took an 8 point lead with NUMERATE before the second numbers. Jim had gone 1 large in his numbers pick, and I'd completely forgotten where his talents lay, so I thought I'd try and consolidate my lead with a cheeky 6 small. Naturally it backfired horribly as I tried to go around the houses only to miss a (relatively) straight forward solution. Apparently Jim was going to go 6 small himself but didn't because he remembered I was supposedly good at maths(!)

We then tied for the rest of the game (including us both missing DYNASTIES (I had got as far as "DYNASTY? Nah, you'd need two Ys...")), with the conundrum going unsolved, which was particularly unpleasant as I spent most of the time thinking "goddamnit, if I'd just picked 1 large...".

Still, well played Jim, was a pretty good quality game. Although I think we can all agree that I can legitimately claim the moral victory as Jim's rating is 1485, and because I am so good at maths I can confirm that 1485 > 1400, and so he is a big cheaty cheat. And probably smells.

U1400 again Michael Wallace 87 - 114 Adam Gilliard

Missing a 9 in round 1 is never going to stand you in good stead, but I was utterly outplayed throughout. A 13 max game from Adam (before I somehow got the conundrum first) means no complaints form me. Except for the fact his rating is 1585 (which, again, is > 1400) and so he is clearly a big cheaty cheat as well :x

Oh no! I've been found out! Just for the record, I managed to type in the first 4 letters of the conundrum before it froze me out and said Michael had got there first. Normally that many letters only happens against Innis! Oh and my rating was only 1577 at the start of the game :P. Perhaps U1400 actually stands for Upwards (of) 1400.

U1400 super-finals match: Adam Gillard 89 - 87 Lloyd Pettet. After a slow start it became a very close game, so I was cock-a-hoop when I got the conundrum.

I was on for a pretty big score, but struck a deal with Tom to save his dignity, letting him get the points in the final 2 rounds. I'm nice like that you see.

Is this finished? If so, when will the results be published? This is all very confusing...
