Wednesday 10th March 2010 (Series 62, Prelim 43)

Post by James Robinson »

Here's a nice question. What happens twice weekly, is thoroughly enjoyable and leaves you wanting more :?:

If you answered sex, then your relationship needs work, if you only get it twice a week :!:

If your answer was the Robinson Recap, prepare to be entertained. ;) :) :D  8-)

Countdown recap for Wednesday 10 March 2010.

C1: Champion Kevin Davis (2 wins, 189 points.) From Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire. He works for the NHS. He loves football, Formula 1 and Britpop, particularly Oasis. He actually once saw the band from the side of Milton Keynes Hall, as he couldn't get any tickets. His favourite place is Berlin and he loves puzzles.
C2: Challenger Sam Denniss. An I.T. manager from Newton, West Kirby, Merseyside. He's a member of a creative writing group and also helps to run L.A.F.F., the Literary Arts & Film Fellowship. 8-) His son, the Apteforumite, Joe Denniss, won a teapot back in Series 58.
DC: Susie Dent and Pam Ayres.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: T O S A O G W R J

C1: GROATS (6)
C2: GROWS (5)
OT: AGOROT (6) ARGOTS (6) GATORS (6) JOWARS (6)
Score: 6–0 (max 6)

Following on from FLORIN yesterday, some more old coinage gives Kevin a nice start to today's proceedings.

Carrying on with the theme, AGOROT (the plural of AGORA) is an aluminium coin and monetary unit of Israel, the 100th of a shekel.

Round 2: I E A R T D E R B

C1: RETREAD (7)
C2: BERATED (7)
DC: TARDIER (7) REBATED (7)
JS: BARTERED (8)
Score: 13–7 (max 14)

The Stellmeister beats everyone with the darrenic 8. Somehow, I don't think Stellmeister will catch on.

Round 3: T A E S M U P C I

C1: IMPACTS (7)
C2: CAMPIEST (8)
DC: CAMPEST (7) CAESIUM (7)
OT: CAMPSITE (8)
Score: 13–15 (max 22)

Sam takes the leads with the..... interesting 8. Having said that, Sam looks a bit like Graeme Garden, who sometimes seems to be on the camp side a bit, doesn't he :?:

Interestingly, everyone misses the more common 8 using the same letters. :o

 I would just like to point out, in case any lawyers are reading this, that I have nothing against homosexuals, and do not believe Graeme Garden to be a homosexual either.

Round 4: A O E S N D R U M

C1: SURNAMED (8)
C2: DAEMONS (7)
DC: MAUNDERS (8)
OT: ENAMOURS (8) NEUROMAS (8) RANSOMED (8)
Score: 21–15 (max 30)

The lead lasts around a couple of minutes as Kevin strikes back with an 8 of his own.

NEUROMAS are tumours made of nerve tissue.

Round 5: 50, 25, 75, 3, 9, 10. Target: 884.

C1: 888. ((9 + 3) x 75) - ((50 / 25) + 10) (7)
C2: 895.
RR: 884. (10 x 75) + (3 x 50) - 25 + 9 (10)
Score: 28–15 (max 40)

Rachel yet again impresses as Sam is too far out and Kevin gets 7 from being 4 away.

Pam reads her poem about a horse, called "The Horse's Farewell To His Cowboy".

Teatime teaser: BIGTEAMS -> MEGABITS

Round 6: A E V T I F A L P

C1: PALATE (6)
C2: palative
DC: FLEAPIT (7)
Score: 34–15 (max 47)

The dodgy 8 by Sam is just that, but DC get the darren.

Round 7: L I H N E S U D A

C1: HANDLES (7)
C2: UNDIES (6)
DC: SUNDIAL (7)
OT: UNLASHED (8)
Score: 41–15 (max 55)

Kevin extends his lead after managing to get a grip on the brief encounter. (Spot the rubbish double joke, if you can.)

Round 8: T B L I E Y O R M

C1: EMBROIL (7)
C2: MOBILE (6)
DC: TREMBLY (7) EMBRYO (6) BLIMEY (6)
OT: BIOMETRY (8)
Score: 48–15 (max 63)

BIOMETRY is the calculation of the probable duration of human life.

Round 9: S E O N G T E V O

C1: TONGS (5)
C2: GENETS (6)
DC: GENTOOS (7)
Score: 48–21 (max 70)

After 5 consecutive rounds of nothing, Sam beats Kevin with a very nice 6, but DC yet again get the darrenic 7.

Susie's Origin Of Words continues with the multiple-choice quiz.

Pam has to guess which of the words used to mean "possessed by a god, or under the influence of a religious frenzy".
Was it:
a) AMATEUR
b) ENTHUSIAST
c) HARLOT

Pam guessed c), but the answer was b). So, the standard of guessing has maintained it's usual high standard.

Round 10: 75, 50, 1, 9, 2, 2. Target: 302.

C1: 302. ((9 - 2 - 1) x 50) + 2 (10)
C2: 302. ((9 - 2 - 1) x 50) + 2 (10)
Score: 58–31 (max 80)

Teatime teaser: CARTESTS -> SCATTERS

Round 11: G I P A O R S L D

C1: SPIRAL (6)
C2: solidar
DC: GIRASOL (7) PRODIGALS (18)
Score: 64–31 (max 98)

Another dubious offering from Sam, but DC pull out all the stops and get the darrenic 9! ;) :) :D  8-)

Round 12: R S N U I E G S O

C1: SOURING (7)
C2: INSURES (7)
DC: GORINESS (8)
OT: SOIGNEURS (18)
Score: 71–38 (max 116)

A nice 8 from DC, but the 9 eludes them this time. (I'd like to thank Dinos for the spelling lesson there. ;) )

Round 13: C K A E T O R Q E

C1: CREATE (6)
C2: ROCKET (6)
DC: RETAKE (6)
OT: COATEE (6) ECARTE (6) RACKET (6) TACKER (6) RECOAT (6)
Score: 77–44 (max 122)

A flat round gives Kevin his hat-trick.

ECARTE is a card game for two players.

Round 14: 75, 25, 50, 10, 5, 4. Target: 313.

C1: 313. (4 x 75) + 10 + 5 - (50 / 25) (10)
C2: 326.
Score: 87–44 (max 132)

The Shandy Selection ( :?: :? :?: :? :?: ) sees Sam go too far again, and Kevin get 10 points.

Round 15: R H A N D Y G I T

C1 buzzes on 18 seconds to say HATDRYING which is incorrect.
C2 buzzes on 25.25 seconds to say DIGNITARY which is incorrect.
JS thinks the answer is already spelt out.
The answer was HYDRATING.
Score: 87–44 (max 142)

What a weird conundrum round there.

First, we have the.... interesting anagram.
Second, Kevin declares a word that almost sounds like something I'd declare :!:
And Thirdly, Sam declares a word that swaps the H for another I.
Thankfully, someone in the audience returned sanity to the show.

But, either way, Kevin has won another show and has now relegated Clarke Carlisle to 9th place in the rankings.

How long can he keep his good form going... :?:

Join me tomorrow to see if Kevin can become a half-octochamp.

Till then, bye bye.

I think Sam said "Shandy Selection" because it's half-and-half. Don't quote me on that though!
Oh, cackwires!
