# Apterous Velvet celebrated his 2900th win! 8 hours ago.

I'm pretty sure you asked me to make Velvet a woman (no, not in THAT way...).

The round in question is here.

What happened: I type in lanolin quickly before I notice the lack of a second L. I then type in ANION, and towards the end of time I put in FOLIAR. Being pretty sure I made that last word up, I declare ANION. In the wrapup, Mr. T tells me about FLORIN and FRAZIL, but the game screen also has FOLIAR listed as a max.

So I guess FOLIAR was left off the wrapup because it was on my list, although (since it wasn't longest) it wasn't mentioned by DC as "you could have gone for, unlucky". (I didn't save a screenshot because I didn't know it would be important until after, but I don't believe it to be one of the ones where only two words get mentioned.)

This is a long-standing bug, you can work around it by starting a new Classic Game featuring the right player (either the same one or any other episode in which they appeared), which forces them to come online.

This isn't a big problem, but every time I open the Apterous homepage or click on a link to any page within the site, the message "Quick Pester: Would you like to be notified by email (youremail@address) when someone comments on a game in which you participated?" reappears. I have clicked it away many times but it just keeps cropping up again every time I navigate to a new section of the website.

...apterous seems to think that for statistical purposes (but not during gameplay), 8-letter words with an umlauted vowel, are 9 letters long. This manifests itself in a couple of ways I've noticed: some 8-letter words are included in my list of "spotted nines". Also n-letter umlauted words are also listed amongst the (n+1)-letter words in other word lists e.g. pencils gained in Superstats.
Well spotted, I caught some but not all of these. Let me know as you spot them and I'll fix them.
My 8-letter word from round one of this game from yesterday, now appears in my list of nines.

And several previous 8-letter words still seem to be in my "nines" list. As I said before, not a big issue, but on the basis of "let me know as you spot them"...

If it happens again in future, I can PM these to you if you'd rather I don't creep the number of posts up in this "Bug Reports" thread.

Yeah sorry, still can't fix that page. If you spot other broken pages, please post them in here (the public humiliation is good motivation to make the fixes).

I logged on to do the duel. I pressed start but the duel window never popped up. I thought maybe there's lag so I posted in aptochat "test". It came up straight away but still no round 1 of the duel. So I closed apterous and logged back on. Much to my annoyance it said round 1 had finished (I'd never even seen it) and got 0 points. I tried again by clicking start and this time, I think it popped up and then closed automatically. I gave up and shut apterous. Here's the logs:

This game in The Ovapass was listed as "maximums only" in the scoring, but this didn't apply to the letters rounds for some reason (non-maximums scored as well).

Same as above; here's another game from The Ovapass where letters weren't max only:

This is really just a point of intrigue, but there's no better place to post it.

When so many people get the same result in a duel, like today's 2nd placed scores, what order do their names go in?
I'm sure it's not alphabetical, chronological, or even based on user IDs, is it just random?

And I swear, though I may have been seeing things, that I saw Player A appear before Player B once but then a couple of hours later when I did a refresh and some other people had also got the same score, Player B had gone in front of Player A.

Just intrigue, but you know what intrigue's like.

I've seen this before with me being on top of a list of "7 pointers" for example but then later I'm bottom. Maybe the later you score the 7 you go to the top and push everyone else down one?

Nah it's definitely not chronological (in either direction) - when I completed today's duel the first two 2nd placers were Barry Evans then me.
As of right now, it's John Gillies, Barry Evans, Bob De Caux, and then me.

Bob completed first, then Barry, then me and finally John. Most odd.

It used to be arbitrary (whim of the database) but it's now by surname.

On classic games, if you leave and come back, a round repeats itself, look at my classic games against David O'Donnell and Shane Roberts.

Not sure whether this counts as a bug, but a couple of things I've noticed whilst playing in German:

(1) in Goatdown, only A - Z buttons appear on screen for your 9th letter, meaning that you can't select the umlauted vowels Ä, Ö or Ü (although if you have some sort of German keyboard, or have converted your keyboard to German, perhaps it might be possible using a keypress). I haven't tried Goatdown in Russian or Greek, but if the same applies, then you would only be able to select a useless 9th letter (A - Z) not in the character set of the language you're playing in.

(2) Lexplorer doesn't seem to allow us to look up of occurrences of umlauted words, as it doesn't seem to recognise the umlauted character. For example, type in SPÜLENDER in Lexplorer, and it fails to identify this spot (my first successful umlauted 9, btw, which doesn't show up in my list of 9s since apterous thinks it's a 10-letter word for statistical purposes).

Neither of these is of great consequence, but I'm mentioning them in case there are easy fixes.

Hmm, I just tested this and they are there, although they're put at the start for some reason (ie top left, before A). In the next version of the client they'll be in a more logical place.

...apterous seems to think that for statistical purposes (but not during gameplay), 8-letter words with an umlauted vowel, are 9 letters long. This manifests itself in a couple of ways I've noticed: some 8-letter words are included in my list of "spotted nines". Also n-letter umlauted words are also listed amongst the (n+1)-letter words in other word lists e.g. pencils gained in Superstats.
Have now fixed this and all the other umlaut-related problems I know about. Please continue to let me know of new ones.

In round 5 of this fucking car crash of a game against my most hated foe The Guardian, I didn't get the chance to enter the solution as it cut straight to 80s Carol getting a pathetic 6 away (I had ((((4x5)-1)x2x9)-3)x10 = 3390 for a Jeffreytastic zero away). I'm guessing it happened because it was maxes-only scoring, but it shouldn't be the default behaviour as the Hyper solver is beatable (presumably more so in shorter rounds - this was 15 seconds).

Maybe I'm missing the point, or somehow I'm still using a previous version, but I'm not seeing some of the "fixed" and "improved" items: no flag behind word boxes (although the words show up in bold, now); Mr Dog isn't saying anything about the clock getting shorter. (I don't seem to have run out of daily games yet, so I don't know whether that's working.)

After each conundrum solution is entered the game is left "hanging", without showing the solution box, sometimes not even registering the result even though it's told me I've got the right answer, like in this game http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=202282, where I had to replay a crucial I'd already answered correctly.

I have been having problems with goatnundrums, the last letter never appears:
ClientGame1302 [CXPLAY]: net.BlockingLayerInterruptedException: net.BlockingNetworkLayer$FinalObjectExtractedException: Stream ended (final object extracted)
Thats the error i get after the conundrum finishes.

Im also having problems with conundrum attacks. After the round finishes it wont let me move on to the next one, and i dont know why. Unfortunately i dont have a stream of letters for the error like i do with the other one.

Charlie, why has the game window been acting like a stubborn dog who doesn't want to go out for a walk?

Normally, I have patience during these types of issues, but not lately.

This has happened ever since you changed the font for Apterous and added the Top Dog feature.

Boo hiss for the lag time!

It looks like whatever you did to fix this, you forgot to do to CSW (no flag, noticeable gap in drawing things).

Also, in my (currently unfinished) game against Plum, I got the popular "final object extracted" error before and after the first numbers (this is the second log):

Code: Select all

CV=0, conts=0,0, sol=4, contlines=4,4, carolBeat = false

And relax

Yeah it hung *snigger* after every conundrum in our Goatblitz game. Was about to paste my Java Console here as I thought I was going to have to leave my duel half-finished, but then it seemed to resolve itself and I was in a rush afterwards.

Is there anything that can be done about the severe lag in the room? Lately you have to refresh several times even just to get through a few rounds.

Yeah, lost two rounds of today's Duel - never saw round 2 letters and then got kicked out with an exception error message just as the third conundrum was about to appear.

Just a tiny error on the site: the reversed ordering of the Chat Archive entries is great but the heading still reads "... arranged in date order (newest at the bottom)."

I'm having a similar problem. I have to log out and in again after each and every conundrum to get the game up and running again. This was especially annoying in today's Top Dog, which was all conundrums.

Well, if my target is to make it to five rounds (total), then once I've scored two points I'm golden, whether that happens in round 2, round 4, or round 5....

(Edit: Unless I'm earning points for missing a really hard conundrum, or something.)

Of course, but thematically it makes more sense to congratulate someone on reaching their target number of rounds, rather than (target-3).

Well, okay, I guess. I had, until this particular game, always assumed that my target was points, and not rounds, anyway (which I guess means I've been doing better than I had thought), which is what made this particularly jarring. Perhaps if I had managed to do this on my very first game it wouldn't seem so weird.

When playing this top dog game, http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=207161 I didn't declare in round 3 (as far as I can make out its impossible). It then asked me how to make 0, which I did, and I got the point! Not that I'm complaining or anything. Obviously

In principle, yes, but I don't think Charlie really wants that sort of behaviour in the app....

Updated to Firefox 3.6 yesterday and have not been able to play on Apterous since. Just get a black screen after clicking on play. Can get in through Internet Explorer ok.

Is there a problem using Firefox 3.6?

Thanks

Nope, been rolling with 3.6 a while now and it's all fine. Try the usual - reinstalling java, clearing web cache, etc. Good luck.

I did today's duel and it gave me a duel jewel for finishing, great. However, I closed apterous and it showed that I hadn't done the duel. When I went back in it said I hadn't done the duel yet and I clicked round 1 and it sure enough gave me the same letters. I don't want to play it again as I now know what words are there etc. Is my original duel somewhere?

Edit: I've played it with my original spots in interests of fairness.

Is there any way of salvaging a game that was lost in a server meltdown? Just I was more than 10 points ahead of Richard Brittain and then it cut off as I clicked "play next round" for the conundrum. The game has now disappeared. It would have been my biggest ever win.

Yep, RB's rating isn't entirely realistic. It's only that high because he steals all Prime's ratings points in Speed Numbers Attacks. I'd put him around 1200-1300 for normo games.
