How would Susie fare as a contestant?
Do you reckon series champion or mere QFinalist?
I remember she couldnt get some of the teatime teasers (unless she was just saying it to make me feel better) that were very easy and she seems very impressed when people get a good numbers solution so it'd be interesting to see her in the chair. On the subject, who would win in a tournament of the following players:
Des O'Connor
Des Lynam
Carol Vorderman
Susie Dent
Alison Heard
Richard Digance
Tom O'Connor
Jo Brand

If I suddenly have a squirming baby on my lap it probably means that I should start paying it some attention and stop wasting my time messing around on a Countdown forum

Jo Brand I think - Damian said in 'Spreading the Word' that she was one of the very few DC guests who could probably beat a good proportion of contestants...

Jo may come up with funny nonsense words, but I think she would be the eventual winner. I would include Stephen Fry and Alan Davies into the selection of contestants though.Julian wrote:Jo Brand I think - Damian said in 'Spreading the Word' that she was one of the very few DC guests who could probably beat a good proportion of contestants...

I think Susie would win. She's so good at memorising the words which come up a lot (daemons, palinode, operant/operand, qintar etc). The numbers aren't so important; at worst you'll lost 30 points , but you can get that back from 4 or 5 of the 11 letters rounds, and that's before you consider 9-letter words or the conundrum.

Yeah, knowing the words is a different skill to spotting them. Otherwise I'd be quite good.

I disagree with that. If you have letter selections where there are no 9's and there are no obscure words that you will know and your opponent wont know, then you have to rely on the numbers to gain a lead, so I think those 30 points are important.Martin Smith wrote:The numbers aren't so important; at worst you'll lost 30 points , but you can get that back from 4 or 5 of the 11 letters rounds, and that's before you consider 9-letter words or the conundrum.

I think Jono's octochamp run proves that if you can nail your opponent on the numbers then you can afford to make shit up in about half of the letters rounds and still win comfortably.

Susie would do so-so, because she's good at the Letters Game, but not the Numbers Game!
