Happened to notice at the end of the credits that today's Weakest Link was directed by none other than Bridget Caldwell, evidently moonlighting - sorry, freelancing - from Countdown.
Some corking answers on today's show including:
Anne In the human body, "peepers" is a slang word for which organs in the head?
Contestant (after a very long pause) Brains.
and:
Anne In maths, what number is the result when a brace is multiplied by a score?
Contestant Can you repeat the question please?

Wow - I was listening to/watching today's episode (which I'd picked pretty much at random from the ones available on iPlayer), and was just about to read this question in your reply, and it came on the show. What are the chances, etc.Phil Reynolds wrote:Anne In maths, what number is the result when a brace is multiplied by a score?

Re: The Weakest Link
I was looking at the UK TV Guide, and I noticed that The Weakest Link has changed time slots.
What time is it on? 2:15pm. Yes, QUARTER AFTER TWO in the afternoon.
Boo hiss to BBC1!
I know the BBC is not a bad channel, but, what can you do?
Is this a permanent change?

Jason, it seems it has been moved for one week only to make way for a 5-part drama.Jason Larsen wrote:I was looking at the UK TV Guide, and I noticed that The Weakest Link has changed time slots.

The schedules I have seen on the BBC website show it back at it's usual time of 17.15

Re: The Weakest Link
Close to the very end of all the Weakest Link episodes that aired this week, this number appeared on the screen:
93862349111
I thought it was a phone number, so just for kicks I dialed it. Then, I hung up before the phone rang because I knew it would cost me if I even listened.
Could someone please let me know what that number is? Is it the Weakest Link Contestant Hotline?

That doesn't look like a phone number Jason. For one thing it doesn't begin with a zero! Also a contestant hotline number usually has next to it the words "Contestant hotline" or something

I know that when Anne Robinson plugs the Contestant Hotline, she says something like, "Oh, if you'd like to be a contestant, it's very easy!." Then, Jon Briggs announces the number while it is on the screen.

Although I've not seen either, I'd assume this is something that can only be seen on the torrents, Jason, rather than on the episodes as broadcast on the BBC, so it's probably something to do with that.

I was kinda joking, Jim. I used to study bar codes for a bit when I was younger, seeing patterns in the numbers and finding links between the first few digits if it was a magazine or a book for example.JimBentley wrote:Bar codes are thirteen digits (or sometimes eight) Kirky-babes.Kirk Bevins wrote:It's a bar code number.

Re: The Weakest Link
They mostly select people from the auditions who come across as lively and personable in the 5 minute video interview and look like they could have a nice banter with Anne, so just be yourself and make sure to tell them lots of interesting stuff about yourself hobbies etc. Obviously you need to be fairly good at GK as well but you don't need to ace the audition quiz. I only got 15/20 and was highest in the group apparently so the standard can't be too high! Best of luck in the audition and hope to see you on our screens soonStewart Scott wrote:I've got an audition for The Weakest Link on Thursday in Edinburgh. Re: The Weakest Link
The audition went OK, been told i'll know within 2-4 weeks if I'm on the final shortlist. It went quite quickly and didn't take as long as I thought it would. In my interview, I had to reenact a scene from a play I did a few years ago which I didn't thnk I ever had to do again but I mentioned my love for acting so it was only a matter of time before they asked me to act. I also wore a t-shirt which drew attention to myself without intending to, it read "Mr Greedy, I love pies!" and was asked if I would wear it if I got on the show, my thinking is Anne would have a few things to say to me judging by my larger build (i'm not as thin as I would like to be) coupled with the t-shirt. Also had the usual student banter and overall I think it went quite well but will have to wait, will update when i've heard back from the production team

Re: The Weakest Link
Thank you Jason Basically being shortlisted means you have a very good chance of getting an appearance on the show but the producers have to be certain that in each show there is a wide mix of people to play the game e.g. they wouldn't want too many men or women in one show, too many younger people, too many people from one part of the country etc. It's basically finding the right people for each certain episode to complement each other and have the right mix of contestants - hope that explains everything Jason

Re: The Weakest Link
I beg to differ. Our language is English (England ∴ English - the clue is in the name). Then there are numerous variants around the world such as American English, Jamaican English, Canadian English, Australian English, Singaporean English, Trinbagonian English, Antiguan English, etc. Some of the differences between them are quite significant. For instance, in the entire English-speaking world except the U.S., the phrase "to table a motion" means to put forward a proposal for discussion, whereas in the U.S. it means the opposite - to suspend consideration. This is just one example of hundreds, and, because of such differences, I think it is important to distinguish between the variants.Jason Larsen wrote:English and American are the same thing because we speak English!Alec Rivers wrote:I don't know if it means something else in American, but in English it's a good thing!Jason Larsen wrote:Shortlisted?

You're quite right Jason I didn't deserve to be voted off. I wasn't there, but had I been, I wouldn't have deserved it. You're also right that the lady in question has several decades on me.
I did actually audition for the Weakest Link a few years ago but they didn't want me. Shame as I got all my questions right in both the written bit and and mock game, but meh. My husband very generously told me I must have been too good and would only have been voted off tactically, and who am I to argue?

They've done celebrity specials for a while now. Think the first one I remember watching was filmed in the "normal" contestants studio and had Nicholas Parsons and Louis Theroux amongst others. Don't know when the last one was but I think they normally do at least one a year for Children In Need. The last one I remember watching was a puppet special which I think you might have liked, Jason, starring luminaries such as Soo (not Reams the one from Sooty), Zippy, Nev, Roly Mo and Sage and Onion (those leprechauns from Live and Kicking)
