Apterous Winter Closed Week 4
Championship flight:
Still some games missing -- you'll be hearing from me if appropriate. This week's matchups are available.
Flight A:
The week 4 matches are up on the website. There were three matches last week that didn't happen; Scott G got a forfeit on Matt Morrison; James Doohan-Barry Evans and Gareth Mitchell-Andy Wilson were scored as 0-0.
Flight B:
Games are up as well. James Levison and Howard Somerset are missing last week's game, as far as I can tell.
Speed Demon:
It's the last week of the "regular season" for the speed demon tournament. The matches are posted, but basically you should go to the standings page, and everybody in your pool you haven't played, you need to play.

Re: Apterous Winter Closed Week 4
I'm in last place of Flight A according to the stats (truly shameful!), but shouldn't my Net Games be higher than those who didn't play their game in the last round? I have won one more game than them, after all?
Re: Apterous Winter Closed Week 4
Myself and Howard are playing this evening so will post the result later on

Henry Meier 2-1 Hugh Binnie
Hugh Binnie 60 - 102 Henry Meier
Henry Meier 75 - 97 Hugh Binnie
Hugh Binnie 43 - 93 Henry Meier
The first two games were like mirror images of each other, one of us getting a nine and the other never quite managing to catch up. Unfortunately, Hugh had a bit of a nightmare in the third game, but that's game scoreline doesn't reflect the close contest of the first two.

Speed Demon Pool B:
Lesley Hines 23-66 Innis Carson
Lesley Hines 26-43 Innis Carson
Second game in particular was a very tight game, with some slips from both of us and an inevitable crucial conundrum which proved oddly tricky in the moment. Lesley told me afterwards that she'd accidentally dismissed "rebelling", as in "belling twice"! Unlucky Lesley, and well played.

Championship Flight:
Innis Carson 111-55 Kai Laddiman
Innis Carson 120-110 Kai Laddiman
In this installment of the ongoing "Kai Laddiman loses a tournament game very narrowly to Innis Carson in unfortunate circumstances" series, he got lagged out on the conundrum in the second game, allowing me to steal the match. I didn't realise it had happened until it was too late, he took it well though. Really unlucky again mate, it was a great game at least. Well played.

Re: Apterous Winter Closed Week 4
I'm hoping that the miscreants will play the game, which will solve the issue in the normal course of events. But Net Games is the number you've won (lost) more than you've lost (won), so they are currently ahead of you in that aspect (not the total number of games won).Edwin Mead wrote:I'm in last place of Flight A according to the stats (truly shameful!), but shouldn't my Net Games be higher than those who didn't play their game in the last round? Game 1: Kirk Bevins 66 - 50 Tom Rowell with a sweet nine in there.
Game 2: Kirk Bevins 73 - 34 Tom Rowell. My first speed 9 max game in this tourney and I've saved it right till the end.
Cheers.

Speed demon: Chazzer Reams 1 - 1 Michael Wallace
Michael Wallace 26 - 50 Charles Reams
Tight until the first numbers, then I fall apart (just like my ex-wife).
Chaz Reams 40 - 48 Michael Wallace
Bad misses from both of us and I sneak the conundrum when Charlie gets flummoxed by INDICATE+D (that's what she said).

Stuart Arnot 58 - 41 Andy Wilson

Andy pushed me all the way to a crucial conundrum in the first game. He made a slow start in the second, and thankfully, for me, the 9 round format didn't leave him enough time to catch up.

Speed Demon: Michael Wallace 1 - 1 Stuart Arnot
Michael Wallace 26 - 53 Stuart Arnot
I start promisingly, then Stuart pulls out phat numbers skillz, then MUFTIS and MAINTOP, and my last throw with 6 small backfires tremendously.
Michael Wallace 42 - 36 Stuart Arnot
Felt this was going to go a similar route, especially with my blank in round 3, but then Stuart misdeclares in the first numbers, I manage my only good spot of the two games with PATINA, and a ridiculous conundrum meant I scraped home.

Re: Apterous Winter Closed Week 4
Flight A: Matthew Tassier 2 - 1 Peter Lee
Peter Lee 101 - 74 Matthew Tassier
Brilliant first game from Peter, getting 12 maxes which could well have been 13 if I hadn't meanly pick 6 small in the last numbers game.
Matthew Tassier 85 - 77 Peter Lee
Close game with the numbers rounds tipping it in my favour.
Matthew Tassier 113 - 69 Peter Lee
My second highest ever score I think. Possibly Peter was put off by my goolies in round 3.

This should probably go in the week 3 thread but er....it's not.
Championship Flight
Stuart Arnot 1 - 2 James Hurrell
My first ever max game and a 13 max game in the decider would make it look like I was a decent player - one look at game 2 would have you wondering otherwise.
Well played Stuart - far more consistent than me!
Stuart Arnot 77 - 139 James Hurrell
Stuart Arnot 102 - 60 James Hurrell
Stuart Arnot 83 - 116 James Hurrell

That second match with Ben was so, so painful. I had the lead twice, including right at the end. And I got pipped by not pressing B quick enough. Still hurting.

Dinos Sfyris 42-14 Matthew Tassier

In the last game Matt went for the conundrum at the death. At which point I spotted it and had a fraction of a second to buzz!

Re: Apterous Winter Closed Week 4
Speed Demon: Michael Wallace 1 - 1 Kai Laddiman
Kai 60 - 24 Michael
Kai makes some good early spots leaving me for dust, and a quick conundrum spot rounded off a trouncing.
Kai 42 - 62 Michael
To my surprise I take round 1, Kai levels it just before the final numbers, which he spots just too late. This game was rather molested by lag, so I was pretty lucky to be given the conundrum. Good game, though.
Divison A: Michael Wallace 2 - 1 Lee Simmonds
Michael 87 - 84 Lee
Lee gets an early lead with the excellent REGULARS, but I fight back with REASSURE (which is quite a good spot for me). I then take the lead with one of my rare biology spots of MITOTIC, before Lee has a couple of bad rounds to give me some breathing space. A surprising pick of 1 large from Lee in the final numbers turns out easy and it was just as well, as he spots the conundrum pretty quickly.
Michael 85 - 101 Lee
We both don't risk GOLDINESS in round one, which is rather embarrassing when we see what 9 was actually there, and the deadlock continues until round 8 when Lee sees a phantom S. I completely fluff two rounds later on to give Lee the lead, and he beats me on the conundrum again to hand me my first defeat of the division.
Michael 98 - 86 Lee
I get an early lead with POSTIES and the lead stays the same until round 11 when I go for the slightly iffy FUMIER whilst Lee is forced to go for the apparently much more risky UNRIFE. He gets back into contention with the excellent DIPTERAN in the next round, but I spot HOARSEN and manage to get the numbers to make sure it doesn't go to a crucial. Which is just as well because Lee beats me to it *again*.
Thanks to Lee for some great games, and he also gets deserves a medal for putting up with my (repeated) technical problems.

Philip Jarvis 2 v 1 Niall Seymour
PJ 67 v 72 NS http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=155459
A very close game, culminating in the condundrum which neither of us got.
PJ 100 v 90 NS http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=155463
Following my stupidity in failing to add an "S" to annul in round 6, the game was tied 90-90 at the conundrum. After 2 tie breaks, I was lucky to bring the games back to 1 - 1 after Niall was unlucky with his spelling.
PJ 101 v 67 NS http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=155474
As a contest, the game was pretty much over after I posted a 9 letter word in round 8.
Well played Niall. It could quite easily have been 2 -0 to you.

Hint: If you just highlight the "James Levison 77 - 73 Andrew Herbertson" bit and then click on the URL box at the top of your message, it does most of the work for you.

Championship Week 4
Phil Makepeace 2-0 Oliver Garner
Makepeace 87-86 Garner
Garner 80-82 Makepeace
Two extremely close matches, in both of which I was behind going into the crucial. You'll notice for the 2nd one that it's only a 9 rounder. We played the first 6 rounds of Game 2 earlier in the week before apterous wiped it with the score at 36-36.

Re: Apterous Winter Closed Week 4
Another late week 4 result (sorry Andrew) from the Championship division:
Martin May 2 - 1 Jim Bentley
Jim Bentley 65 - 90 Martin May
After threatening to descend into a farce of disallowed words and daft miscalculations, we kind of pulled ourselves together; Martin's excellent MURALIST and WARPAGE plus the conundrum gave him a fairly convincing win.
Martin May 67 - 87 Jim Bentley
Not a great game in terms of quality but pretty close throughout; despite my brain falling out during the second and third numbers games, I managed to cling on to level the scores.
Jim Bentley 84 - 94 Martin May
A fairly well-contested decider that after the first few rounds looked as though it could be a classic, but then our standards slipped somewhat, especially mine - three dodgy offerings in a row left me 20 points behind and Martin duly ran out the winner. Cheers, Martin!
