Post by Allan Harmer »

Countdown Recap for Friday 10 April 2009
Jeff tries to get Rachel to do a dance in the Intro and, as usual, has a resounding lack of success - More later.
C1: Champion Shane Roberts (1 win, 87 points.)
Shane is a likeable chap who showed signs of promise in his surprise defeat of Andrew yesterday, coming from behind to nick it on the post. He was a 14 year old punk and now has an eclectic taste in music. He is also a vegan who enjoys cooking and eating his own (veggy) curries.
C2: Challenger Keith Butcher.
A Warehouseman from Elmswell in Suffolk. He enjoys country music, collects football badges and has visited 82 of the football league grounds. He would like to complete the full set by visiting all 92 grounds. He is a 'Tractor Boy' and has followed Ipswich Town for 40 years. I visited Portman Road when on holiday there in 1967 and the club was sponsored by Tolley Cobbold, the local brewery.
DC: Susie Dent and Jonathan Ansell. Jonathan is an amiable opera singer who was runner up in the X factor with G4. Jeff throws the hand grenade in that women can't resist Simon Cowell and Susie does a nifty sidestep to change the subject :)
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: S O D E S U T E R

C1: DESERTS (7)
C2: douser
DC: ROUSTED (7) TRUSSED (7)
OT: DOSSERET (8) OERSTEDS (8)
Score: 7–0 (max 8)
DOSSERET = a block of stone placed above an abacus in Roman or Byzantine architecture.
OERSTEDS are units of magnetic field strength. Sounds very much like the teachers' dreaded OFSTED.

Round 2: M N T A O E C D I

C1: DOMINATE (8)
A nice spot by Shane to give him a strong start.
C2: MINTED (6)
DC: DEMONIC (7) COMEDIAN (8)
OT: ACTIONED (8) CATENOID (8) DAEMONIC (8) DEMONIAC (8)
Score: 15–0 (max 16)
Catenoid is a geometric term.

Round 3: Q A P I C O R I G

C1: CARGO (5)
C2: CRAG (4)
DC: CORGI (5) CIGAR (5)
OT: PICARO (6) PIROGI (6)
Score: 20–0 (max 22)

Round 4: L W R O U A S V I

C1: VARIOUS (7)
C2: SAVIOUR (7)
DC: VROUWS (6)
OT: LOUVARS (7)
Score: 27–7 (max 29)
VROUWS are South African women or wives.
LOUVAR is a brightly coloured fish

Round 5: 7, 4, 10, 3, 8, 5. Target: 971.

C1: 967. 7+5=12x8=96x10=960+4+3 (7)
C2: -
OT: 971. 10+3=13x(5x (8 + 7))=975-4 (10)
Score: 34–7 (max 39)
A tough numbers round and Jeff pees on Shane's firework by telling him that if he multiplied 4x3 instead of adding them he would have been one away instead of 4 :)

Jonathan tells us a couple of stories about forgetting his lines in a music exam and on stage, which is refreshingly honest and self deprecating. He advises that G4 split up because they were on top of each other 24/7 and it became too claustrophobic. Let's look forward to the G4 reunion in about 3 years time then 8-)
He says that he isn't bitter about not winning the X Factor, which means he is totally naffed off about it.

Teatime teaser: DROPPESO -> PROPOSED

Round 6: E X T R I E R N M

C1: MINTER (6)
C2: MINER (5)
DC: EXTERN (6) TERRINE (7)
OT: REINTER (7) REMIXER (7) RENTIER (7) TRIREME (7)
Score: 40–7 (max 46)
TRIREME = A Roman or Greek galley ship with 3 banks of oars

Round 7: D U M O P A D U H

C1: DUMP (4)
C2: DAMP (4)
OT: DADO DOPA HAPU PUHA HOMA HUMP UMPH MADO MAUD OPAH OUMA OUPA POMA PUDU PUMA UPDO
Ther are too many OT 4 letter words that will take a month of Sundays to look up and give definitions for. You know where the Dictionary is ;)
Score: 44–11 (max 50)
Another rubbish letters round and Shane has established a comfortable lead that will be tough to peg back by Keth.

Round 8: T L G S O E A S M

C1: moatless
C2: GLOATS (6)
DC: LEGATOS (7)
OT: MALTOSE (7) MOLESTS (7)
Score: 44–17 (max 57)
MALTOSE is a sugar produced from starch
Shane takes a risk with moatless but he can afford to as the difference in score is almost negligable with such a big lead as this.
Round 9: R O J A N E P A C

C1: PRANCE (6)
C2: PRANCE (6)
DC: CANAPE (6)
OT: APNOEA (6) ARCANE (6) CANOER (6) CORNEA (6) CREPON (6) PRAJNA (6)
Score: 50–23 (max 63)
APNOEA = Temporary cessation of breathing, particularly during sleep - sounds a bit dodgy to me :o
CREPON = a fabric like crepe
PRAJNA = a Buddhist term referring to the direct isnsight of truth taught by the Buddah.

Susie tells us about the origins of the 'Dear John' letter, which is an American invention. The female equivalent in US is 'Dear Jeanie' and in UK it is 'Dear Jane'

Jeff quips that he left a Dear Jane note under the note of an ex girlfriend's car many years ago and would do it again if the need arose. His tongue was firmly in his cheek as he said it I think.

Round 10: 1, 10, 10, 8, 5, 25. Target: 168.

C1: 168. 25-1=24x(8-10/10) (10)
C2: 168. 5+1=6x25=150+10+8 (10)
Score: 60–33 (max 73)

Teatime teaser: GELTINTS -> SETTLING

Round 11: R E N I T A S O S

C1: STONIER (7)
C2: STAINERS (8)
DC: SENATORS (8) SENORITAS (18) ASSERTION (18) NOTARISES (18)
Score: 60–41 (max 91)
A juicy letters round and Shane dipped out big time here with Keith picking up a risky 8.

Round 12: T B L I O A O Y P

C1: POLITY (6)
C2: PLAT (4)
OT: BLOOPY (6)
POLITY is a form of government
BLOOPY is an American term relating to making errors.
Score: 66–41 (max 97)
An excellent spot by Shane to restore his superiority.

Round 13: N A H O N E R A L

C1: LOANER (6)
C2: LOANER (6)
DC: ANNEAL (6)
OT: AREOLA (6) LANNER (6)
AREOLA is the area of coloured pigment round a nipple - let's suck it and see
LANNER is a type of falcon.
Score: 72–47 (max 103)

Round 14: 3, 3, 10, 8, 6, 75. Target: 140.

C1: 140. 8+6=14x10 (10)
C2: 140. 8+6=14x10 (10)
Score: 82–57 (max 113)

Round 15: A G A I N S T I T

C1 buzzes on 7 seconds to say SATIATING which is correct.
Score: 92–57 (max 123)

A nice game again by Shane and he will make a worthy opponent for our own Claire Sudbery on Monday. I am really looking forward to this one. Best wishes Claire.

The show ends with Jeff promising to do a dance and makes as if to stand up - Then suddenly remembers that dancing in Yorkshire is illegal on Good Fridays. Big groans all round.
