You need to give me more info than that. First, PM me your Java console (see above for instructions ad nauseam.) Second, where does it fail and what happens?

This is basically a temporary network blip, somewhere between you and the apterous server, that occurred at the moment you were trying to sign in. Not really much that can be done about it, other than to live nearer Peterborough. On balance you probably don't want to do that.

For anyone reading this who is as confused / confusable as me... you should have a Java icon in your taskbar (bar along the bottom of the screen). Right click, select "Open Console" and copy the last page or two of what's there. NB: Scroll to the end, that's the most recent stuff.

ok, this is the first time I have tried to login to apterous, so it might be my fault, but it ain't working. Any ideas?

(I have loaded the most recent version of Java, so it's not that. It gets up to the 20th attempt to login and then just stops...and then, when I try again, it freezes on the first attempt.)

I've just signed up.

I then clicked play and it went until it got to stage 50 of 50 before saying log on failed.

Is this a problem everyone is having or am I doing something wrong?

It seems that apterous is down ATM.
Since Charlie is having a well-earned break from fixing apterous problems, I suppose we'll all have to go 'cold turkey' for a while.

I tried it at school today in the afternoon; I was just wondering if the reason it wouldn't load was because it was at school with various other computers on the same internet-thing (I'm not so good with technology!) or whether it was down. Ah well! Well-earned break indeed, apterous is super :D

I can't believe we've survived a whole day without apterous. I would have thought by now that 3 people would have hanged themselves, 4 people would have shot themselves and 16 people would have been run over by a VW campavan or a Nissan Micra. :o :o :o

I'll have you know me & my Micra have only run over one fox, one pheasant, and a dog (which ran off sharpish) to-date. A number of low-flying birds and an overly confident cat were almost added to that list on Saturday though.

I'm looking to add a short, blonde-haired Chelsea fan to my list though.

Hi everyone, i'm new. First post. When launching Apterous I get "attempt x of 50" and x plods from 1 to 11 (so far) and nothing. My Java is up-to-date (Version 6 update 10).

Can someone reassure me it's not something i'm doing wrong and tell me what we do when this happens? Wait? Do we email Charlie to get a reboot or does that annoy him?

Thanks everyone,

Rob.

I had some problems using Java version 6 update 11 which seem to have been resolved by installing version 6 update 7 instead - not sure how you will get on with update 10.

Top tip: If you can't get in, go back to Apterous home page and click on Today's Games (on the left hand side: http://www.apterous.org/browsegames.php). If no games have been played lately, the site is down and it's not your computer.

Thanks for the responses Clare, Steven and Ian. Hey Jimmy - why the sarcastic "Read the forum"? Is it "put off new people" week?

I am trying to prepare for my appearance on the show around having a busy work / family life. So, I read the FAQ, searched the forum for "Attempt of 50", read the thread, I get that Charlie is on a break, I get that he also said "email me if it's down", I get that you have been a member since May 2008 so know all the nuances, I get that it doesn't work all the time and I get that it's an enthusiast website. My question was to the point, but friendly too right?

Stay the trigger finger Jimmy, if I really am an annoying newbie who has missed some great thread post that already explains everything I was asking, then just ignore me!

Cheers,

Rob.

I reckon. When you follow everything on the forum, it's easy to forget that for a newbie, it's hard to guess exactly which thread you need to read to find the info you're looking for. Doesn't hurt to step outside your own skin once in a while, imagine how easy it'd be for someone else to find out the stuff you know and take for granted.

OK, sorry, I was just trying to say it has been mentioned loads of times already. I didn't mean to upset you. Yeah, I suppose I do come across as a bit of a dick. You'll be pleased to know this'll be my last post. Number 1, I don't think people like me posting and number 2, I feel I have to "walk on eggshells" or whatever, like I have to really scrutinise what I say to make sure it won't offend and so there are no spelling/grammatical errors. I'm a bit of a penis and social aptness isn't a plus point for me. I'll still be on apterous, etc (if it's ok). Please don't be too cruel when I'm on the show though :D

Aw mate, come back! It was hardly crime of the century.

Can't speak for anyone else, but I don't have a problem with you at all, was just pulling you up on one small thing. Fwiw I don't think people like me posting either, but (a) I know how stupidly easy it is to get paranoid on places like this when there's no body language to help communicate, and (b) I don't care, I'll keep posting anyway.

I think the only time I've ever noticed Jimmy before was when he was insulting Lesley Jeavons (similarly for no reason) which I also took exception to. And he (or at least his IP address) was somehow involved in some apterous shenanigans (cheating under a duplicate account), although I think he claimed it was his brother or something.

I still can't get in though. It just gradually cycles through Login Attempt X of 60 without doing anything, and I've tried using both Java v.6 Update 7 and Update 11. What's most frustrating is that I paid the £15 a few days ago and haven't yet got anything out of it.

I'm getting the same as you, Joe. Possibly it's gone down again, as the list of today's games has nothing later than 12:24, and a twenty minute gap at this time of day/night is most unusual.

I'm not sure using CountMax to put in 3- and 4-lettered words should constitute cheating, if the little brother story was a ruse, which would be almost even more retarded than just general Bolasing.

Come back Jimmy, I, for one, like you.

Good news though, I managed to catch the offending bug red-handed this time and can now do something to fix it. This might take minutes or days depending on the full extent of it, which I haven't figured out yet. In the mean time I've restarted the server, so enjoy.

I was patient yesterday. Today I can get in (in Firefox at least, I eventually realised that IE was one cause of my access problems, another was trying to connect via my work's VPN - D'oh) and play real people but no daily duels (either yesterday's or today's). Other people say they are missing too but I thought I saw someone playing one earlier so it's neither universal nor peculiar to me. (I have looked through other topics to find out if this is explicable to no avail, so please don't all kick the newbie.)
