James Martin's infamous numbers game

Post by Martin Gardner »

Michael Wallace wrote:Well I imagine we've all done this in our own time, but it would take one of the more hard core people to tell you if anyone's put together something like that. I'm aware of 4 large theory (which you can work out for yourself fairly easily, it starts off with knowing all the numbers you can make with just the 4 large numbers, and then moving on to the general rules that allow you to do stuff like this).
I've actually worked out why this solution works now. For ages, I've been unable to think of how he did this, but I think I might have it. Obviously, I'm not inside his head but I think this is now it works.

Firstly, what I would do it (100 + 50) * 6 + 3 = 953

What I think he did was (100 + 6) * 3 = 318
75 / 25 = 3
3 * 318 = 954

Now you've only got the 50 left. But if you split the 75/25 into two separate calculations, you can use the 50 as a 2, in the same way as the 154, 203 and 302 rules (like [75*50+100]/25 = 154). So

(100 + 6) * 3 = 318
318 * 75 = 23850 (as pointed out on YouTube, using this method you don't actually need to know what this is)
23850 - 50 = 23800
23800 / 25 = 952
If you cut a gandiseeg in half, do you get two gandiseegs or two halves of a gandiseeg?

Wow, it's taken you that long to figure it out? I'm sure it's been explained here before and the old forum and on all the youtube videos.

Oh, and 150x6 is 900, not 950.

There's this video on YouTube, which explains how you use the 50 and 75 as a 2 and 3.

Was that yours Ben, nice! Everyone seemed to be enjoying the use of Aphex Twin too, I approve!
Love your avatar too, much nicer than the fat baby - though to be honest in reminds me of reading Digitiser moreso than playing Bamboozle.
