Spoilers for Monday 28 November 2022 (Series 86, Heat 116)

Post by Johnny Canuck »

FOUNDEST^ apparently not in, but since it's on Lexplorer it blocks seeing the real maxes. Does anyone have a word list I could use to get all the 7s?
I'm not dead yet. In a rut right now because of stress from work. I'll be back later in S89. I also plan to bring back the Mastergram - if I can find a way to run a timer or clock through pure MediaWiki without having to upload to Vimeo every time.

I assume it's in because of the single syllable adjective rule.

Whether or not it would be allowed on the show is anyone's guess...

ADJECTIVE
1
Having been discovered by chance or unexpectedly.
1.1
(Of an object or sound) collected in its natural state and presented in a new context as part of a work of art or piece of music:
collages of found photos
More example sentences
1.2
(Of art) comprising or making use of found objects.
1.3
(Of poetry) formed by taking a piece of non-poetic text and reinterpreting its structure metrically.
2[WITH SUBMODIFIER]
(Of a ship) equipped:
the ship was well found and seaworthy

No list is found enough.

Agreed, a comprehensive word list is one of the lostest treasures of Countdonia :ugeek:

What makes you think FOUNDEST isn't in? They didn't say in the episode that it wouldn't be allowed. Have they disallowed it in a previous game?

At least two people on the wiki said it shouldn't be allowed. One asked on my talk page "Why did you include it?". In this community, I've often assumed two people is a consensus.

Definition 2 that Fiona copied in looks like it'd allow -er/-est. If you can be well found (= equipped) then you can be founder or foundest than something else

Two a consensus?! Also people wouldn't comment to say it should be allowed, or they'd be commenting on every word that ever got mentioned. So two against, but it could be any number for.

But it does say with submodifier (the "well" in this example), and would you say something is well founder/est?

Edit - It's a strange one though. It has to have a submodifier? But then any submodifier? If you look here at points 2.172 and 2.173 it talks about superlatives taking submodifiers.

My view is that it's a bit daft, but under our current dictionary rules, and in the absence of a definitive word list, is allowable.

I can imagine a party game where I hide objects and people look for them. The pepper pot shaped like snoopy is the foundest object.

(Yay, let's all go to one of Fiona's parties!!)

I think grammar should be factored here. The problem with allowing ‘foundest’ is that ‘found’ in this context comes after a submodifier (as labelled by [WITH SUBMODIFIER] in the dictionary page) such as ‘well’, ‘fully’ or ‘partially’. Grammatically, it’s the submodifier that’s doing the comparing and not the adjective itself; so one ship would be better/best equipped than the other, or better/best found. On that basis, I don’t think Countdown would accept ‘foundest’. I just don’t think it’s grammatically correct. Contestant guidelines do also state that the monosyllabic adjective rule does not apply to every possibility, which is indeed true.

The monosyllabic adjective ‘built’ would adopt the same principles; more or most built rather than builter or builtest.

Have readded it now, seems there's no reason for it not to be in. I can make changes on a dime but usually go with what Lexplorer says anyway.

It's a pity there aren't more posts about the actual game. Surely this isn't the place to argue about lists etc?

I'd say it's inconclusive based on this discussion. The max is 7.5.

Well, it was related to the game and is also a spoiler. But it is true that certain discussions can get kind of lost in spoilers threads.

About the game then - Stephen K Amos was an interesting choice for DC guest. He hasn't really been on television much recently, and I was wondering if that was because shows were choosing not to book him. I was going to say put on some sort of blacklist, but that would have been an unfortunate choice of wording.

Is Stephen K Amos the unnamed celeb in the article? Haven't found anything to say that online

Edit: Ah just seen the tweet, interesting

Thanks, you're right. I saw that defuse was valid, and assumed there was defusion, but no....

The definition Susie gave for INERTIAL is puzzling. How can a force be at rest?

Yeah, INERTIAL describes forces of which the bodies (i.e. objects) are at rest or in a straight motion.

ADJECTIVE

mainly Physics
1
Relating to or arising from inertia:
high-speed centrifuges generate large inertial forces
the inertial load on the motor

1.1
(Of navigation or guidance) depending on internal instruments which measure a craft's acceleration and compare the calculated position with stored data.

1.2
(Of a frame of reference) in which bodies continue at rest or in uniform straight motion unless acted on by a force:
the laws of physics take the same form in all inertial frames

When I went to school, the term referred to the absence of any forces acting on an object, thereby causing an absence of change in the object's velocity.

This doesn't appear to be helpful recently as everything is coming up 'invalid' - including 'invalid!'

I'm usually a bit apprehensive about returning older threads to the top of the list, but this one is still quite near the top, and we're between series anyway, so....

I noticed that 'emptier' was available as a DC equaller in one of the later rounds, but I'm only 90% sure it's a word. How can something be 'emptier' than something else? Unless one of the definitions of 'empty' is 'almost empty'!
Also the fact it wasn't mentioned by DC added to my 'slight' doubt.
