Scrabble

Post by Derek Hazell »

I have just seen Marcus Brigstocke's Trophy People on catch-up, on the subject of Scrabble.

Filmed at the championships in London, we met players David Webb*, Jake Jacobs (and his partner Barbara) and Christian Brown. There was also uncredited interviews with a married couple who had actually met at the competitions (her name was Nula), a couple of elderly ladies, and a big bloke with black hair. Former champion and event director Philip Nelkon, a Countdown finalist way back in Series 2(!) was also interviewed.

Craig Beevers was visible several times in the background, including shots of him wearing his number 7 "Beevers" football shirt.

The programme finished with a surprise victory for Jake as the new champion against hot favourite Christian. Marcus presented him with an extra trophy and seemed to have become quite fond of the elderly Jake who was battling heart problems as well as the other competitors.

*I notice that there was a Countdown finalist in Series 22 (1991) called David Webb, I wonder if this is the same person?

Saw that. Have played most of them at tournaments actually. :) And yes, the two David Webbs are the same person. In fact more than a few Scrabblers appeared in the earlier series of Countdown- the likes of Allan Simmons, Philip Nelkon, Philip Appleby, Peter Finley, Russell Byers, Darryl Francis, Clive Spate, Bob Violett, Joyce Cansfield and of course Mark Nyman were all Countdown finalists and have had long and fruitful Scrabble careers.

There doesn't appear to be much of a crossover between the newer generation of Scrabblers and Countdown though- messrs Holden and Beevers notwithstanding.

A few have been on but not done so well, I seem to recall James Hurrell beat two Scrabblers in his octochamp run - one of them being Phil Robertshaw.

I'm not surprised that Scrabblers don't do particularly well, as the vocabulary available is significantly different from the Countdown one.
Even though I'm only an unrated social player, in most weeks I spot a DC equaller or beater which turns out to be invalid. :(

Cannot believe how long it took me to find this thread. I don't know how Gevin does it but he seems to have a knack for knowing where every thread in existence lives.

Anyway, how much have the valid 2- and 3-letter words changed much over the last 10 or so years? There was that company called Tilefish that used to do the nice laminated single-page reference sheets for a few quid including postage. They don't seem to exist any more. Anyone doing anything similar that you know of?

This would be one of the easier ones. Just search for "scrabble" in topic titles.

I am going to my first Scrabble tourney in over 2 years, next month I shall make enquiries about tile fish successor
With regards to 2 and 3 letter words, there has been a steady trickle of new words over the last few years like ZE, BAO, and OPA but from April 21st Scrabble players will have to unlearn slur words with include a good half dozen 3 letter words
There isn't a list so to speak but by elimination you can work them out
Bye bye, ABO, JEW and LEZ

Cheers Marc, yeah let me know if you find out anything. I didn't really realise at the time I ordered them before but seems Tilefish was basically just a bedroom operation I think rather than a proper company. Someone with a passion for Scrabble, a printer, and a laminator.
