Has anyone been playing Wordle? Apparently it's big at the moment. It's basically hangman but without the man and there's only one word a day so everyone in the world is trying to guess the same word. I got today's in four guesses. It's fine I guess but with only being able to play it once a day I can see the novelty wearing off fairly quick. Here is the link anyway.

Streaks should only be broken if you attempt it and don't get it rather than if you miss a day. Although once Wordle moves to the New York Times I won't be playing it anymore.

Personally I got bored of it the day before it moved to the New York Times; a happy coincidence. I do occasionally like a stab at an 11-letter version though.

There are quite a few spin-offs from this. as most of you will be aware. But to name a few, I tried Quordle for the first time today where you have to solve four different ones simultaneously. Also Worldle and Globle are quite fun map-based ones. Which ones do you like?

If Quordle is too much for you, there's Dordle instead. Conversely, if it's not enough for you, try Octordle.

There are two Crosswordles kicking about. The first is a good concept but a misleading name (it even describes itself as a sudoku version of Wordle rather than a crossword). You get the answer and have to work out possible previous guesses (in strict mode, so the user would have had to continue to use found letters etc.) - it's a good idea but I'm getting a bit bored of it, probably because time doesn't feel as much fun/pressured as a finite amount of attempts in terms of a measure of success.

Second Crosswordle is as you'd expect. Just found it yesterday (technically today as just after midnight) so haven't decided how much I love it yet but found the first play pretty frustrating - hard to find words that fit and working out what letters are in the words requires a bit more concentration than I expected.

It kills 10 minutes and is doable although I have needed at least 18 turns

Yeah this one is fun to guess two words on and then pick off all the answers without wasting a guess.

I'm not a huge fan of non-canon wordles and don't do any daily but my favourite I've found so far is semantle (too lazy to link on a train). Basically you guess a word and it tells you how semantically close it is to the target word, from some huge database of news articles or whatever. I got my first one in 4 due to blind luck but usually you're doing well if you get it in under 100. Can also be fun to play in a group

I tried this and it's much quicker than you might think. As soon as you have all the five greens for a word, it will accept it as done and it won't make you actually type in the word. I did it in 82.

Kilordle is excellent! I'm down to 45 guesses. I don't know if I have the stamina to try and get it below 45, not sure what the minimum actually is!

OK, so, it functions like Wordle, except with 1,000 grids. The aim is to solve the 1,000 grids in as few guesses as possible. This would obviously take >1000 guesses if done the normal way, so there is of course one subtle difference - you don't have to get all fives greens in the same grid at the same time. You do have to get all five greens, but you can get them in as many guesses as it takes. For example, if the word in grid #465 is PENIS, and your five guesses are MINGE, ARSES, PUSSY, LABIA and BEANS, you would solve grid #465 after guess five, cos the P-E-N-I-S are all in those five guesses in the right place at some point. You would also solve BABES, LUBES, PUBES, MANGE and BANGS in the process, because they too also have all their letters appear in the right place in all the guesses so far at some point.

I reckon it can probably get streamlined down to 35, especially if a Graeme type out there does some graeming to it with his algorithms and queries and that. I base this on the precisely three goes I've had.

If you did want 1000 puzzles, changing the "n=1" part in the nordle link (eventually*) gives you 1000 wordle puzzles that would take at least 1000 attempts. Though once it starts putting puzzles across multiple lines (>18 on my screen) it gets pretty hideous.

Tracking with pen and paper - took about 3 goes to work out what I needed to do. Still a couple of inefficiencies - reckon it can be improved upon!

I noticed a few people failed on yesterday's Wordle (CATER). They got the ATER and ran out of guesses for the first letter. I went for WHEEL. Took out WATER, HATER and LATER in one go. That's how you're supposed to play, losers.

I had REACT after 2 goes (5 yellows), and it took me an embarrassingly long time to work out what to go for next.

How well do people generally do on this? I've never failed, but never done better than guess 3, with the vast majority of games solved on guess 4.

I went for something like CHUMP, which takes out (or confirms) four letters. The only time I failed was early on. I had something like S-AR- on the first go, hadn't worked out the right approach. Ended up trying 12 different letters in those two spaces, all of them wrong. Got it in two for the first time today.

My daily nerd consists of:-
1. HEARDLE
2. WORDLE
3. QUORDLE
4. NERDLE
5. OCTORDLE
6. WORLDLE
7. 16ORDLE

7 is a good number. I did DORDLE for a time, but when I needed to drop one to pare things back to 7 after HEARDLE got added, that was the one to get the chop. I also tried hellowordl for a bit. Fun enough, but not daily. Auditioned CHORDLE, BYRDLE, BIRDLE and NUMBLE, but they varied from 'meh' to 'horrendous' (Chordle).

Having read this, I suppose I'd better give KILORDLE a go...

Did a few more ordles tonight.

I spent an hour doing that 1000ordle thing! I had gotten it down to 27 words remaining after 32 guesses, when it suddenly froze on me. When I fixed the freeze, it reset. So I will not be going next nor near it again, the buggy piece of shit...

To scratch the itch it left, I went for a spot of 32ordle. Much better, but like 16orlde, a bit too easy, and a bit too time consuming.
Neither of these will earn a place it the daily nerd regime.

On Wordle and the multiple simultaneous Wordles, you seem to get the required number of goes plus 5. So Wordle gives you 1 + 5 = 6. Octordle gives you 8 + 5 = 13. Etc. Other than plain Wordle, when I play these I always start with the same four words that use up 20 letters and then that still gives me one spare to make a mistake. It seems to work. WACKY, BURPS, THING, MODEL. All different letters. Does anyone else do anything like that?

So use the first 2 to get 10 letters, then try and pick which ones have the best chance of being guessable in 1 from then on. Exactly this. On the occasions I play the simultaneous ones I fire in two words (usually ATONE and DRIPS) and then pick the others off, and give up if I ever waste a word. It's surprisingly fun to get sedecordle in 18, but anything above isn't much of a challenge imo.

Dinos always mentions his four of CLOSE NIGHT DWARF BUMPY but I'm not a huge fan because none of the words are that great individually, and you never really need four.

Dinos's is pretty much the same as mine, except that he has an F whereas I have a K. I did wonder if an F would be better but I came up with my words in a couple of minutes and couldn't be bothered to redo.

CANES/GUILD/BROTH for me, but only on Quordle. On regular Wordle I always end the word 'ES', but the start letter varies between a C, P, H or M, the second letter is A, I or O and letter 3 is N, R or T.
