Monday 15th November 2021 (Series 84, Preliminary 100)

Post by Rhys Benjamin »

Annedown XCIX and it's the 100th episode of the series! BT have also decided that I'm not important enough for decent internet this weekend, so I'm watching in buffering potato quality... so much so I even missed the start of the Grand Prix yesterday.

Countdown recap for Monday 15 November 2021.

OTD in 1969, the first colour TV advert in the UK was broadcast: BirdsEye's frozen peas. So both Anne and Rachel agree on frozen peas, before Rachel sarcastically says today should replace the late May Bank Holiday as it's more momentous.

C1: Champion Mark Lay (1 win, 106 points.) Data and insight analyst.
C2: Challenger Ali Keys. 65. Transfusion ergonomist. From London, now living in Manchester - "that's not your fault, is it?", quips Anne - but Ali confirms it was indeed.
DC: Susie Dent and Christopher Biggins.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

R13: A E E D N L M N V

Round 1: O I A D G L N A R

Mark: LOADING (7)
Ali: LOADING (7)
DC: ADORING (7) DIAGONAL (8)
OT: LARGANDO (8)
Score: 7–7 (max 8, jos 8)
Darren-o-meter: 0/1 (0%)

Sevens for the contestants but Dictionary Corner make it to an eight with some awful puns along the way.

Round 2: C T F E O T G A D

Mark: COTTAGED (8)
Ali: COTTAGED (8) (try)
DC: DOGFACE (7)
Score: 15–15 (max 16, jos 16)
Darren-o-meter: 1/2 (50%)

Darren alert! And both contestants hit it. Lovely jubbly.

Round 3: 25, 100, 8, 10, 6, 2. Target: 345.

Mark: -
Ali: 345. (8 + 6) × 25 − 10 ÷ 2 (10)
Score: 15–25 (max 26, jos 26)

Mark stares into the middle distance and draws a target as blank as his expression. 10 easy peasy points for Ali.

Teatime teaser: TORTILLA -> LITTORAL

Round 4: T L S O E A D T R

Mark: SLOTTED (7)
Ali: LEOTARDS (8)
OT: DELATORS (8) LODESTAR (8) STARTLED (8) TOADLETS (8)
Score: 15–33 (max 34, jos 34)
Darren-o-meter: 1/3 (33%)

Ali sees a Countdown favourite and Mark doesn't, extending the lead out to 18 points.

Round 5: E O I P T N D T A

Mark: pedation (try, risky... and misdeclared as 9)
Ali: OPINED (6) (stick with)
DC: TIPTOED (7) ANTIDOTE (8)
OT: ANTIPODE (8) TETANOID (8)
Score: 15–39 (max 42, jos 42)
Darren-o-meter: 1/4 (25%)

Mark gets an invalid word, and misdeclares it for good measure, which gives Ali another six points.

Round 6: 10, 6, 6, 7, 2, 9. Target: 156.

Mark: 156. (6 + 9) × 10 + 6 (10)
Ali: 156. (6 + 9) × 10 + 6 (10)
Score: 25–49 (max 52, jos 52)

thank u, next

Anne and Christopher reminisce over their Weakest Link days (Christopher was beaten in the final by Basil Brush (who, for our younger readers, was an entertaining and HILARIOUS fox puppet character, who seemed to have the same joke book as Richard Whiteley)). And then he basically has a health check-up with Dr A Robinson.

Round 7: E E I M S P Y S R

Mark: PREMISES (8)
Ali: IMPRESS (7)
DC: SIMPERS (7)
OT: EMPRISES (8) SPIREMES (8)
Score: 33–49 (max 60, jos 60)
Darren-o-meter: 1/5 (20%)

Mark begins his fightback with an eight.

Ali explains why she did a Postgrad at University in her 60s. If it were me, it'd be for the cheap club nights. Well, that and the cricket.

Round 8: P N P A O I K R E

Mark: KIPPER (6)
Ali: PINKER (6)
DC: PRANK (5) PROPANE (7)
OT: KNAPPER (7) NAPPIER (7) PROPINE (7)
Score: 39–55 (max 67, jos 67)
Darren-o-meter: 1/6 (17%)

Sixes for both contestants, which Susie can extend to seven.

Round 9: 100, 75, 7, 9, 6, 8. Target: 560.

Mark: 558. Mistake in working.
Ali: 558. 75 × 8 − 7 × 6 (7)
RR: 560. (75 + 8 + 6 − 9) × 7 (10)
Score: 39–62 (max 77, jos 77)

Mark is 10 out, so Ali comes back in and takes another 7 points, but Rachel shows us how it's done. Despite the easy route to 56, no LNAFP here.

Teatime teaser: HAPPIEST -> EPITAPHS

Round 10: L S H I U A N R U

Mark: RUINS (5)
Ali: URINALS (7)
DC: LUSH (4) INSULAR (7)
OT: INHAULS (7)
Score: 39–69 (max 84, jos 84)
Darren-o-meter: 1/7 (14%)

"You know I like a drink, Anne", says Christopher. Just after the word URINALS. Stop right there. Ali extends her lead and now leads by a whopping 30 points.

Round 11: A A I N H D S W E

Mark: SHINED (6)
Ali: HANDIES (7)
DC: HANDSAW (7)
OT: ADHESIN (7) AWENDAS (7) NAIADES (7) WAHINES (7) WEASAND (7)
Score: 39–76 (max 91, jos 91)
Darren-o-meter: 1/8 (13%)

Ali wins another round and extends again, now leading by 37 points... and looks certain for a teapot.

OOW Susie talks about seasonal words.

Round 12: S R N A E O F G T

Mark: FRONTAGE (8)
Ali: FORAGES (7)
DC: FRONTAGES (18)
Score: 47–76 (max 109, jos 109)
Darren-o-meter: 2/9 (22%)

Mark realises all too late he misses the S and drops 10 points.

Round 13: A E E D N L M N V

Mark: LEAVEN (6)
Ali: MELENA (6) ("not sure" of spelling)
DC: LANDMEN (7)
OT: MANDLEN (7) VELAMEN (7)
Score: 53–82 (max 116, jos 116)
Darren-o-meter: 2/10 (20%)

A great spot from Ali and that 10 points that Mark dropped has made most of the difference, as he'd still be in the game if he did.

Round 14: 8, 4, 9, 9, 10, 1. Target: 721.

Mark: 721. 8 × 9 × 10 + 1 (10)
Ali: 721. 8 × 9 × 10 + 1 (10)
Score: 63–92 (max 126, jos 126)

Rachel threatens them with allowing him to solve it if the contestants don't get it, and he interjects with "OH MY GOODNESS" before Anne starts the clock, which completely throws the director off and we get some strange camera angles during the clock. Luckily for all of us, it's super easy.

Round 15: L U M P Y S O O P

Ali buzzes on 5.5 seconds to say POMPOUSLY which is correct.
Final Score: 63–102 (max 136, jos 136)

A ton for Ali, then. She'll be back tomorrow. See you then.
