Annedown XCV and still no All4 subs.

Countdown recap for Tuesday 9 November 2021.

On this day in 1880, Giles Gilbert Scott (inventor of the telephone box) was born. Anne bemoans the fact they've been repurposed to store defibrillators, which is such a bone-dead stupid thing to say that Rachel goes off on one.

C1: Champion Roddie Bell (4 wins, 426 points.) From East Lothian.
C2: Challenger Marigold Katsande. From North London. Personal coach and nutritionist. Recommends, for Anne, drinking more water. Appears to be wearing an outfit that has, seemingly, giant poppies across her chest.
DC: Susie Dent and Alastair Campbell, who needs to do more of his buttons up. You're not Tom Harwood. You can't open the shirt that low...
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: S L R I U I K S A

Roddie: LARKS (5)
Marigold: SAILS (5)
DC: SKIRLS (6)
OT: SALUKIS (7)
Score: 5–5 (max 7, jos 6)
Darren-o-meter: 1/1 (100%)

Fives each to get us underway.

Round 2: M I S P A R S A V

Roddie: VAMPS (5)
Marigold: impairs (risky) - phantom I
DC: RASPS (5) PRISMS (6)
OT: AMARIS (6) MIRAAS (6) PARVIS (6) PASARS (6) PASSIM (6) SIMARS (6)
Score: 10–5 (max 13, jos 12)
Darren-o-meter: 1/2 (50%)

Marigold sees her phantom as she's declaring, but even manages to get that wrong by saying it's a phantom E rather than a phantom I at first...

Round 3: 50, 5, 2, 1, 4, 9. Target: 461.

Roddie: 461. (50 + 1) × 9 + 2 (10)
Marigold: -
Score: 20–5 (max 23, jos 22)

Marigold "didn't finish in time" and Roddie now has a big lead. Nerves getting the better of her, it would seem.

Teatime teaser: FREDLATE -> FALTERED

Round 4: S I R E F I R N A

Roddie: firier (misspelling of fierier)
Marigold: FIRES (5)
DC: REFRAINS (8)
OT: FRIARIES (8) RARIFIES (8)
Score: 20–10 (max 31, jos 30)
Darren-o-meter: 1/3 (33%)

Susie says Roddie "need[s] the two Es again". That was yesterday, Susie.

Round 5: P R E A N L E U G

Roddie: PLAGUE (6)
Marigold: PLANER (6)
DC: EARPLUG (7) REPLUNGE (8)
Score: 26–16 (max 39, jos 38)
Darren-o-meter: 2/4 (50%)

PLANER is apparently some sort of tool. Susie REPLUNGEs and finds an eight. Is that what we call a "double dip"?

Round 6: 25, 75, 10, 9, 5, 5. Target: 970.

Roddie: 964. (not written down) (75 + 25 − 5) × 10 + 9 + 5 (5)
Marigold: -
RR: 970. (9 + 5) × (75 − 5) − 10 (10)
Score: 31–16 (max 49, jos 48)

Difficult two large round, but Marigold doesn't even get within... anything, and Roddie extends his lead.

Alastair talks about the vetting process when he started working for Tony Blair, and obviously as the vettee, you're not exactly sure how it works, and one of the vetters was Alastair's local newsagent. // Oh, is that it? That's right down there with the Joe McElderry fire alarm anecdote.

Round 7: S D A U L T F O E

Roddie: DEFAULTS (8)
Marigold: DEFAULTS (8)
DC: FLOUTED (7)
Score: 39–24 (max 57, jos 56)
Darren-o-meter: 3/5 (60%)

Darren-o-clock! Susie confirms it's Alastair who's getting the words he claims. Alastair probably made her say that.

Round 8: D E T I N L A R T

Roddie: TAINTED (7)
Marigold: TRAINED (7)
DC: ATTIRED (7) DELTA (5) LATRINE (7) NITRATED (8)
OT: DELIRANT (8) DETRITAL (8)
Score: 46–31 (max 65, jos 64)
Darren-o-meter: 3/6 (50%)

Alastair barking up the wrong tree, looking for a DELTA- prefix.

Round 9: 75, 2, 10, 5, 4, 4. Target: 284.

Roddie: 284. (75 − 4) × 4 (10)
Marigold: 280.
Score: 56–31 (max 75, jos 74)

Marigold's awful day with the numbers continues as Roddie takes out another 10 points on her. The 25-0 numbers game score today is, by no coincidence at all, also the extent of Roddie's lead on Marigold.

Teatime teaser: LATESLUG -> GLUTEALS

(Another 4-minute ad break. I swear, if I have to hear that Galaxy Buds ad again...)

Round 10: W E T H E R A S B

Roddie: WEATHERS (8)
Marigold: BREATHES (8)
DC: SHERBET (7)
OT: WREATHES (8)
Score: 64–39 (max 83, jos 82)
Darren-o-meter: 3/7 (43%)

One of the easiest 8s of all time. Which Marigold doesn't declare.

Round 11: D O I E P C N H I

Roddie: PINCHED (7)
Marigold: PHONED (6)
DC: ECHINOID (8)
Score: 71–39 (max 91, jos 90)
Darren-o-meter: 4/8 (50%)

Roddie extends his lead to 32 points after winning a letters round for only the second time.

OOW More portmanteaus from Susie: spam (spiced ham in the past, Monty Python in the modern day), hazmat (hazardous material), cosplay (costume play), twerking (twist and jerk, 1800s word but same meaning as 2010s), bodacious (bold and audacious (isn't that a tautology?)), vitamin (1912 word, vita and amine (as in amino acids, now disproven thought of what vitamins included)), fortnight (14 nights).

Round 12: G A N P A O R T E

Roddie: PORTAGE (7)
Marigold: PRANG (5)
DC: PATRONAGE (18)
Score: 78–39 (max 109, jos 108)
Darren-o-meter: 5/9 (56%)

Anne asks Alastair whether he or Susie got the nine. "Susie and I worked together" is a horrifically spun answer. Thankfully Anne translates that into English as "Susie got it". But Roddie has got himself over the line.

Round 13: N Q L E A U M B E

Roddie: BLAME (5)
Marigold: AMBLE (5)
DC: ALBUMEN (7) NEBULAE (7)
OT: EQUABLE (7)
Score: 83–44 (max 116, jos 115)
Darren-o-meter: 5/10 (50%)

Only fives here whilst DC end their day on sevens.

Round 14: 75, 4, 1, 8, 9, 4. Target: 167.

Marigold's awful day with the numbers continues before it's even started on this round, asking for a "Scotland Yard" when she actually means a Whitehall, and Rachel, being born in the 1980s, doesn't even know what that is and has to properly think about it.

Roddie: 170. (not written down) (75 − 9 − 8) × (4 − 1) − 4 (7)
Marigold: -
RR: 167. (4 ÷ 4 + 1) × 75 + 8 + 9 (10)
Score: 90–44 (max 126, jos 125)

And it continues still further. Oh dear.

Round 15: M A R G I N G A P

Marigold buzzes on 24 seconds to say RAMPAGING which is correct.
Final Score: 90–54 (max 136, jos 135)

Despite the odd pronunciation, "ramper-jing", Marigold gets the consolation prize of the conundrum. Although, as Richard Whiteley once said, there isn't a booby prize on this show - in that sense.

Anyway, Roddie makes that five wins and looks virtually unstoppable. Will anyone stop him? Tomorrow, we'll find out. Join us then. Goodbye.
