Thursday 4th November 2021 (Series 84, Preliminary 93)

Post by Rhys Benjamin »

Annedown XCII and who's ready for my Countdown backlog? It's odd having a real life, isn't it?

Countdown recap for Thursday 4 November 2021.

On this day in 1939, the first air-conditioned car was unveiled in Chicago. As Anne points out, the temperature at this time of year in Chicago is about 7 degrees. Celsius, presumably. Rachel moans about taking layers on and off going in and outdoors in -23 in Canada.

C1: Champion Roddie Bell (1 win, 111 points.) Works for a funeral company.
C2: Challenger Sean Jackson. From Windsor. Self-employed. Used to be in marketing, but now does marketing support freelance... or something. He sort of gabbles, presumably so Anne can't understand a word he's saying and thus can't have a comeback. Good. The Boris approach. He'll go far.
DC: Susie Dent and Ben Macintyre.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: H D T I A E N C O

Roddie: CHAINED (7)
Sean: COINED (6)
DC: ACTIONED (8) CATENOID (8)
OT: INCHOATE (8) TECHNOID (8)
Score: 7–0 (max 8, jos 8)
Darren-o-meter: 0/1 (0%)

Roddie takes an early lead as Sean can only see six in this fairly meat-and-drink selection.

Round 2: T D E A N G I O S

Roddie: GODETIAS (8)
Sean: SEATING (7)
DC: SEDATING (8) AGONISED (8) DIAGNOSE (8)
OT: SEDATION (8) STEADING (8)
Score: 15–0 (max 16, jos 16)
Darren-o-meter: 0/2 (0%)

El Countdown Wordico! Ben misdeclares DATING as a seven, which Susie stems with DE-.

Round 3: 100, 1, 6, 7, 2, 8. Target: 618.

Roddie: 618. (100 + 2 + 1) × 6 (10)
Sean: 618. (100 + 2 + 1) × 6 (10)
Score: 25–10 (max 26, jos 26)

thank u, next

Teatime teaser: HUGODOES -> DOGHOUSE

Round 4: E I W R E U G S L

Roddie: UGLIER (6)
Sean: SWIRL (5)
DC: GRUELS (6) LURGIES (7)
OT: LEISURE (7) RIEGELS (7)
Score: 31–10 (max 33, jos 33)
Darren-o-meter: 0/3 (0%)

Once again, Susie doesn't find the most obvious max, eschewing LEISURE in favour of LURGIES.

Round 5: N E P I T N E R I

Roddie: TINNIER (7)
Sean: TINNIER (7) (try)
DC: ENPRINT (7)
OT: NERITINE (8) RINNEITE (8)
Score: 38–17 (max 41, jos 40)
Darren-o-meter: 0/4 (0%)

Try or try not, it's the same word.

Sean reminds us he's not Gary Barlow.

Round 6: 25, 3, 1, 7, 6, 10. Target: 706.

Roddie: 706. (3 + 1) × 7 × 25 + 6 (10)
Sean: 707.
Score: 48–17 (max 51, jos 50)

Good solve from Roddie - and it looks like this game is already done as a contest.

Ben tells us the story of the SAS.

Round 7: L T P O A E N T E

Roddie: POLENTA (7)
Sean: PLANET (6)
DC: ANTELOPE (8)
Score: 55–17 (max 59, jos 58)
Darren-o-meter: 1/5 (20%)

Ben matches Roddie on POLENTA, and looks quite chuffed with that until Susie pulls out an ANTELOPE.

Round 8: D R A O M T A A N

Roddie: MATADOR (7)
Sean: ARMADA (6)
DC: MANDATOR (8)
OT: MATADORA (8)
Score: 62–17 (max 67, jos 66)
Darren-o-meter: 1/6 (17%)

Turns out Roddie can add an A to MATADOR, but I don't blame him for missing it.

Round 9: 25, 6, 7, 4, 10, 3. Target: 880.

Roddie: 880. (25 − 3) × 10 × 4 (10)
Sean: 883.
Score: 72–17 (max 77, jos 76)

10 more points for Roddie and that's a massive lead now.

Teatime teaser: ARCBASIS -> BRASSICA

(4 mins of ads. Seriously, All4?)

Round 10: P S I E M L O E M

Roddie: SIMPLE (6) (stick with)
Sean: SPOIL (5)
DC: pommies POMMELS (7)
OT: POLEMIES (8) POLEMISE (8)
Score: 78–17 (max 85, jos 83)
Darren-o-meter: 1/7 (14%)

Roddie extends his lead again...

Round 11: N H S C K A E E I

Roddie: SHAKEN (6)
Sean: CHAINS (6)
DC: HANKIES (7) ENCHASE (7)
OT: ACHENES (7) CHAINES (7) HACKEES (7) HACKIES (7) NICKASE (7)
Score: 84–23 (max 92, jos 90)
Darren-o-meter: 1/8 (13%)

You can actually put an E in CHAINS, but turns out no one noticed.

OOW Susie finishes off the "food" series by talking about dates, burrito, and gnocchi.

Round 12: L S O I O D N A R

Roddie: LARDONS (7)
Sean: SOLAR (5)
DC: ORDINALS (8) DOORNAILS (18)
Score: 91–23 (max 110, jos 108)
Darren-o-meter: 2/9 (22%)

Sean's only on five here, with Roddie icing the cake of his win.

Round 13: S D R B E I A C U

Roddie: CARBIDE (7)
Sean: curbside (not written down) - US spelling of KERBSIDE
DC: BRUISED (7) SIDECAR (7) CARDIES (7) ASCRIBED (8)
OT: ADSCRIBE (8) CARBIDES (8) SUBEDARI (8)
Score: 98–23 (max 118, jos 116)
Darren-o-meter: 2/10 (20%)

CURBSIDE^ is a good try but not good enough.

Round 14: 100, 3, 1, 1, 4, 7. Target: 608.

Roddie: 608. (7 − 1) × 100 + 4 + 3 + 1 (10)
Sean: 608. (7 − 1) × 100 + 4 + 3 + 1 (10)
Score: 108–33 (max 128, jos 116)

thank u, next

Round 15: K E S H I S P E N

Roddie buzzes on 22 seconds to say SHEEPSKIN which is correct.
Final Score: 118–33 (max 138, jos 126)

Well, that was a domination and a half, and Roddie is through with his second win to Friday's game. Read that recap which is already up (out of sequence in terms of when I'm writing these). Or, in other words, join us "tomorrow".
