When Nick asked why CHUTNEYS doesn't end in IES, I think a better explanation than the one Susie gave about it being a borrowed word is that words that end in vowel-Y generally just take an S.

I think Susie was speaking legalese for "I don't know".

Indeed, Susie was talking nonsense. CHUTNEYS does follow the regular standard English plural, plainly and simply. How could someone like Susie get so confused?Gavin Chipper wrote: ↑Fri Apr 23, 2021 6:07 pm When Nick asked why CHUTNEYS doesn't end in IES, I think a better explanation than the one Susie gave about it being a borrowed word is that words that end in vowel-Y generally just take an S.

I was so happy when Andrew mispronounced MISLED, as I remember myself mispronouncing it in exactly the same way as a child!

I was well into my 20s before I realised what the word actually was.Howie Myers wrote: ↑Sun Apr 25, 2021 11:42 am I was so happy when Andrew mispronounced MISLED, as I remember myself mispronouncing it in exactly the same way as a child!

I would have thought context would have prevented you from being mizled.
Re: Spoilers for Friday 23nd April 2021 (Series 83, Preliminary 80)
I knew what the word meant - just never twigged it was mis-led. Same with denier as in climate change - thought it was pronounced the same as stockings.
There are probably other words in my head that are still wrong

It reminds me of biopic and how some people don't seem to realise it's bio-pic, not like myopic.
