Best lexico example sentences

Post by Fiona T »

Came across this beauty today

"If you really must go for a jog in the middle of a thunder storm, remember to vaseline nipples thoroughly beforehand."

Gev, can you confirm if this is sound advice?

Came across a few corkers when trawling ODO for dictionary updates back in 2014 or whenever it was. The one that I can still remember is from the defintion of gack (meaning cocaine):
Lexico wrote:‘Everyone not playing with their toes in a crib, or drooling down themselves in a care home, is fully aware that models hoover up the gak like their careers depend upon it.’

I don't know if the definition of woe is well known, but it's in the NODE so it dates back at least 20 years. Liverpool fan at the OUP?

Found this under SHART which made me laugh:

‘I just sharted all down my leg, and I don't know how to hide it from people seeing it at the supermarket.’

Weird, I can't see that sentence listed.
‘I've had things happen that my emergency kit in the truck has helped with: the shart, for one thing, so the spare briefs come in handy.’
‘A shart can be a one-time, isolated incident, in which case it is simply a mistake when attempting to pass gas.’
‘I used to wallow in self-pity and humiliation every time one of my infamous sharts was let loose.’
‘I think I have to fart, but I'm scared it might be a shart.’
‘‘Fecal leakage’ doesn't have the implication of controlled but misconstrued bowel movement that a ‘shart’ has.’
‘I had no choice but to move myself away from the manager slightly and let a tiny fart escape; this, however, was no fart, but a dreaded shart.’
‘Today, in the middle of a presentation, I fought a shart, but the shart won.’
‘A shart could happen to anyone, but for most it is a rare occurrence, only happening if they have the flu or diarrhea.’

The ones you've given are under the noun, the one I found is under the verb. :)

This one's quite evocative

https://www.lexico.com/definition/ptomaine

‘Being in town, I warily went along to the Colorado Ballet's production of The Nutcracker, a ballet I normally prefer only slightly to ptomaine poisoning.’

(You know you've spent too long on apto when you both spot ptomaines and both miss tangerine...)

Some of the stranger words give appalling sentences...

"Since none of the above are going to happen, it therefore falls to one of the four of us to lead the Tories on to (cough, splutter) victory (mwahahaha - collapses under desk in mirth)."

Only because I played Drookits* which isn't valid so looked it up:

‘We rescued her and the wheelchair, and even though she was droukit she was still in full can belto voice.’

I've had "Unshart my Fart" stuck in my head for days.

Not related to lexico in any way, just thought it was funny.

I favour medical tape. More effective and less messy. A more hirsute man than me may find removal problematic though.
