This isn't something that I've only just realised (it was quite a while ago), but Sanskrit is an actual language. It's not "sandscript" - a general name for ancient languages that were written in the sand.

I only recently , from watching Never Have I Ever , learned that Sanskrit is the main language of Hinduism.

Not everyone knows their blood type
I just asked my missus (in her mid fifties , as am I) what her blood type was and she didn't know.
I guess unless you have had a surgical procedure , why would you ?

Peter Shilton and Peter Schmeichel have very similar names for two goalkeepers. I noticed because I was doing a Sporcle quiz and one of the answers was Peter Shilton, but I couldn't think of his name. I was like "Peter Sh." and ended up with "Schmeichel" in my head. I got it in the end though.
Goes to show what a bad sport football is. Even their naming system lacks imagination.

Or more likely you hold the crust ( cooler than the molten cheese no doubt ) but don't put the crust in your mouth.
Try holding the apex of the segment and come back to me.

As I say, generally I was agreeing with you and Gevin that mouths are far more sensitive to fingers - and whilst maybe this is true perhaps there is something in a "dry skin vs wet saliva" line of thinking. I dunno, I didn't get much sleep.

This is a fascinating discussion as I don't think there is a clear answer it depends on what you are consuming , and how , also the tolerance level of the individual.
I readily admit I'm more of a Larry David when it cone to hot beverages , it has to be hot.
I know it's thirty years ago but I developed a habit of gulping my coffee down to give me more time on the snooker table during my lunch break , when I was a bus conductor.

The benefits of science isn't really a great reason to do something hugely expensive.
The Falklands War and the Iraq war benefitted science with treatments of burns victims and prosthetics but surely we don't want to justify conflicts.

Yeah the ballpoint pen that works in zero gravity and costs hundreds of thousands of dollars was a great idea for writing in space.

I think there's probably very limited scientific value in sending some people to the moon for a few hours. At the time, they probably thought that progress would continue rapidly in that area and they wouldn't have a 50+ year gap, so it made sense to them at the time to plan for more than one mission to get some momentum going. Plus they'd spent all this money on technology that can send people to the moon, so it would be better bang for their buck to have more than one mission (plus some might go wrong).Paul Worsley wrote: ↑Wed Jul 01, 2020 2:20 pmThere were huge benefits in the fields of science and technology from the space program. Re: REALLY obvious things you've just realised
The increase in our understanding of astronomy, geology, the origin of the solar system, the moon have all been greatly enhanced by the Apollo program. The eight year deadline issued by JFK in 1961 led to a rapid increase in development in many technologies, including fuel, fabrics, computing, telecommunications, metallurgy etc. Products like memory foam and flame retardant clothing are two examples of products in use today that are a result of the NASA program.Marc Meakin wrote: ↑Fri Jul 03, 2020 1:34 am

Aside from this, the demonstration of human potential has never been beaten.
So, in my opinion, the ends do justify the means.
As for your story about NASA spending hundreds of thousands of dollars developing a pen that could write in space.... urban myth, I'm afraid. The Americans used pencils too up until 1968, when a private US company invented the non-gravitation ballpoint pen. They bought 400 at a cost of $2.39 per pen. Shortly afterwards, the Russians bought some (for the same price)

I'm not sure this really fits in this thread but:
"drove my Chevrolet to the levrolet"
comes up with Googles matches, whereas:
"drove my Corvette to the Lorvette" (in quotes obviously)
does not. Not one.
Perhaps more approriate to this thread:
The Battle of the Bulge was an actual real life battle, not just something people say when they're talking about losing weight.

Re: REALLY obvious things you've just realised
Not sure if this is a REALLY obvious thing, but it's probably quite well known.
Ever since my dad took me to see Live and Let Die in 1973, I've seen pretty much all the subsequent Bond films in the cinema on their original release. Until recently I'd never actually seen any of the Sean Connery ones, but as ITV have started running them all again, I thought it was time to give them a go. Despite not having seen the films I felt I'd seen enough clips and heard enough discussion of them over the years to be familiar with the basic plots, villains, set pieces etc.
What surprised me is that I thought the character of Ernst Stavro Blofeld was in one or maybe two of the early films, but it turns out he's in pretty much all of them. In some he's the star villain, while in other's he's just in one or two scenes as the shadowy figure of "Number One" at SPECTRE meetings. In some cases he's not even named as Blofeld, but the white cat on his lap indicates it's clearly the same character. No wonder the makers of the Daniel Craig reboot were so keen to reintroduce the character into the canon.

Blofeld only appears in three of the novels, and is strangled by Bond in "You Only Live Twice" . The timeline of the novels is completely different to the films, so he seems pretty much indestructible in the movies.
There was some contractual problem which meant the makers of the movies couldn't use the character of Blofeld, nor the organisation SPECTRE from Diamonds Are Forever onwards, until the last movie, SPECTRE, when Blofeld was resurrected.

In the opening splash screen of Sonic 2 - which I spent my youth playing - the character of Tails is given the full name of Miles Prower. It has just dawned on me that this is not a typo of Power, but a pun.

Those things that come up on Facebook "find out your superhero name" and similar are targeted scams to get the answers to common account security questions for password reset. They'll ask for things like your first pet, mother's maiden name and first street you lived on.
