apterous update

Post by Charlie Reams »

Will post a longer update when I have time, but just to keep you informed: due to a faulty disk, the database experienced some quite serious corruption last night and neither the game nor the site can work without it. I'm currently investigating whether we can retrieve it all without resorting to a full restore from backup (which would lose the history since the last backup).

Fortunately, I was in the process of building a new server anyway, thanks to a very generous donation from Supee that was left to apterous in Phil Collinge's will. So although the transition will be a bit more painful than I would've liked, we should be back with considerably more powerful hardware in the next few days.

Thanks for your patience -- subscriptions will be extended obviously.

That's amazing that Phil did that. What a man. Much love as ever to him and Supee.

Very touching to hear about Supee and Phil's donation. Keep up the good work, Charlie - apterous and c4c are your babies and they have engendered a great community spirit among their members. It's incredible that Phil has honoured that community togetherness in this way.

Thanks for the update Charlie, and for all your hard work.

Special thanks to Phil and Supee as well. Great to know Phil's memory will be honoured when we get the new server.

First of all, does that mean all ourn games will be deleted when the new server comes into effect?

Second, what happened to Phil?

Supee announced the news on Apterous. I don't think anything was said on this forum.

No, it was before the pandemic happened. The newspaper report said he had undetected cancer.

Oh my god! Interestingly enough, when I last saw Phil on Apterous, there were other people in the room besides him, so I figured I shouldn't bother him with a game. There were times when Phil was the only one in the room besides me and he almost blocked me because I was harassing him too much. Then I eventually learned and played one game with him.

He was quite young, wasn't he?

It happened back in January Jason.

Supee told people on facebook, and on apterous. It was a big shock to us all.

Incredibly generous of him to leave a gift to support the site, and shows what a big part of his life apterous was.

Yes, it must have been, Fiona!

Were Supee and Phil boyfriend and girlfriend?

Great job Charlie!

Thank you Charlie we appreciate your hard work, looking forward to being back On-line again, but what a generous gift left by Phil and Supee, I had some amazing battles with him on apterous. Phil was a big part of the community and his seniors tournament were really enjoyable, we will never forget you Phil you are still sadly missed.

They were married I think, Jason. It's probably best to not discuss their private life on this thread either.

That is an amazing gesture from Phil/Supee. Charlie - is there any specific or non-specific help that members of the C4C/Apterous community can provide with respect to the rebuild?

Yes, it's really good and it's amazing that Apterous and this community have had such an effect on someone that they wanted to do this.

Isn't it Supee that is arranging for this to happen since she's the one still alive?

Interesting that CDB is down, but the Wiki is up. I would have thought that since they were both [site].apterous.org, there would have been more of a correlation there?

Not necessarily. A subdomain (e.g. whatever.example.com) can point anywhere, often to a different server to the main domain or other subdomains. The only thing that necessarily unites them is ownership of the domain.
