I would probably go for "US telephone directory", even though I stink at 4-large.harry wrote:I've decided not to apply until I've thought of something original to say when requesting the numbers.

Re: "...and a better one..."
This is a major dramatic defect in Countdown IMO, if that is possible. It would be more interesting if the host interrogated the board whether the contestant who had guessed was right or wrong. If wrong, it would make a "no" sound (as in other game shows); if right, it would reveal the answer. To do this would involve a certain amount of new technology from C4, which might be a problem cash-wise. But it would make the conundrum more exciting - but would it be too vulgar?Ralph wrote:Perhaps I have too much time on my hands.
But I was thinking today when watching the conundrum...
the contestant guessed..
Des said "Let's have a look shall we?"..
the letters flipped over ...
and - tension mounts - surprise - he was right.
I still hope to see when the letters flip over that the contestant was wrong.

It's like in 8/10 Cats when they have to pick the top five most talked about things. I'd like to ask for a P - two middle from top row, two below them, one from each of other rows under left of them.harry wrote:I've decided not to apply until I've thought of something original to say when requesting the numbers.

Re: "...and a better one..."
Is today the first time it has been done by both contestants in the same show?
Also, we haven't had the "Y" joke yet since Jeff's been in charge.

That reminds me, if I went on again I would ask for "2 small ones and any 4 large of your choice".Marc Meakin wrote:I think it also the first time 4 large has been chosen by Rachel/Carol when given the choiceDerek Hazell wrote:Is today the first time it has been done by both contestants in the same show?

If you mean people saying "why not?", I think the opportunity doesn't arise often enough for it to be annoying. But I vividly remember the brilliant John Davies responding entirely deadpan with "I have to start somewhere" and getting absolutely no response from anyone in the studio.Derek Hazell wrote:Also, we haven't had the "Y" joke yet since Jeff's been in charge.

You've never played me, have you?Ralph Gillions wrote:After hearing it said for so many years I believe any contestant who - after being offered an `X` or a `Z` - says "And a better one please Carol", should be severely punished. Perhaps taken outside and horse-whipped, or automatically eliminated.
Or both.
Just to show how reasonable I am - I also find myself turn against any contestant who always chooses 3 consonants, 3 vowels, and 3 consonants. The `3,3,3` brigade for some strange reason irritate me.
You see, I`m perfectly reasonable.

My secret shame is that I think the "Y" joke is really funny. I was going to do it when I was on, but didn't get the chance until my last game and by that time I was a bit zoned out and forgot.Derek Hazell wrote:Also, we haven't had the "Y" joke yet since Jeff's been in charge.

Don't go stealing my jokes blud.Darren Carter wrote:"Can I have two large ones from your top rack please Rachel?"
Btw, that one is defo getting asked when I'm on in September! Tempted to ask for one something Jeff would be used to as well aka a 'Hartlepool', or lots at the bottom.

Ha wondered how long it would take for you to spot that one, longer than I thought actually. The Hartlepool one would be a good one, although it would lead to 6 small numbers......Jeffrey Burgin wrote:Don't go stealing my jokes blud.Darren Carter wrote:"Can I have two large ones from your top rack please Rachel?"

As far as today goes, I was shocked to hear a rapturous applause after Paul's first hilariously un-funny "joke".

I know, Jason, but there was already a thread about it, so I thought I'd comment.Jason Larsen wrote:Derek, it's not the end of the world!
It's the way it is always set up as a joke which is the irritating part of it, and each person says it as if they are the first one to ever think of it.
It's completely different to a vocal tick, which I think is mean to pick up on, such as DesO's "okey-doke", which was misquoted by most of the very forum members who claimed to keep hearing it as "okey-dokey".

Anyone who doesn't respond to "Y" with "because I fucking asked for one" is a pussy.
